With the amount of influence that it had on the rest of the series? You could say it's more of a Mario game than SMB.
The "All just a dream" ending allowed Nintendo to not use any of the content in further games if it wasn't popular, however it was, so they did :p.
Brentalfloss is awesome.

Its ist indeed funny how they ended up using many of the enemies in later mario games, like the shy guys.

I still wouldnt say its more of a mario game than the original.
And yes, Brentalfloss is über. :P
