With the Winter Olympics just around the corner, does Sega's video game tie-in deserve a gold medal? Or should it not have even bothered competing?

I love the winter Olympics, maybe it has something to do with being from Canada, but I enjoy them

Only because america - sorry USA- mainly sucks at wintersports and so does not care for the winter olympics, it does not mean the rest of the world thinks so too. Here in Europe they are a big event (espacially for the small alpine and scandinavian countrys). It's not allways about USA. OMG haw smallmindet are you?

Second all time in total medal count at the Winter Games.
Yeah, that US sure sucks.
But that was not the intention of my post. I aimed more at the fact that some games have non mainstreamed audiences, so they may not apeal to you but to fans of these type of games. And mostly thes fans exist, even it maybe not such a big group like the madden fanbase.
I don't like wintersportgames too, but it doesn't mean that these games suck per se.

You have to remember, a majority of the US is not further north like those countries. There are only a few states where an athlete can actively participate in those competitions all year round. So, basing it on population is moot. Granted there are a few from states below say.. the Mid-Atlantic region, but I can't say there are many.
Also, if it was not your intention, why mention it at all? Why say they "suck at wintersports", when obviously, we don't.

2nd Germany (East+West Germany)
3rd Norway
4th USA
5th Austria
If you don't count this way, you can't compare at all. The reason
(history) should be obvious - just to finish up the whise assing.
As you can see even Germany is in front of USA and we have way less people and less possibilitys to train (from the geographic point of
view, which you mentioned), but wintersports are more popular here. We have big clubs and societys for these sports. It's just a question of interest....... and money of course.
Or do you know a famous US American biathlete, ski jumper or
cross-country skier? Very popular sports here.

See.. no, it doesn't work like that. USSR and Russia are separate, West and East Germany are separate. During those times, they were counted separate, and shall continue to remain as such. You can't just lump them together all of a sudden to make it seem like they have more in the counts, regardless of history. While we're at it, why don't we lump the EU all together.
But of course winter sports are going to be more popular in a location where there is access to such venues. Winter Sports are very popular in the all along the Northern US; because they have greater access to participation in said activities, against say someone in Florida, who won't have accessibility to Mountains and the like. At the MOST they may have a skating rink, but that's it.

Yeah.. I didn't get it. Berlin Wall falling. USSR Splitting, Germany
becoming One nation again. Were you even alive then? I was.
But, I didn't get it.
The funny thing is, the IOC doesn't really keep tabs on official medal counts, but still you can't combine nations all of a sudden to support your cause, when, according the IOC they are separate.

Your list just has no significance because you are comparing like 70 (no exact number here) years of participation in winter olympics of the USA to like 40 years of USSR, East-/West Germany.
So the only possibility is, to see it combined somehow, or only look at the last 20 years, or you can't compare it at all. I hope it's clear now.
Anyway I apologise to go so far of topic.

These are all respectable sources. So at least here in Germany we use this table. Can't find any English sources but its easy to see what it means.

Regardless of it is 2nd or 4th, which ever way you want to slice it. The proof remains that the US doesn't suck at the winter games.
