For too much of my life I have been a mindless consumer of time, hopelessly forcing value in things that never once gave an ounce of value back. Now that I am older, I worry endlessly as I see a new generation making the same mistakes I now deeply regret. For those willing to open your minds, I offer this film and hope my message is honest and clear. For, after all these years, it is The Only Thing I Know...

That was great. So very true as well. Lucky I found that out just as I was graduating High School. I would hate to think about what my life would be like if I still devoted every waking minute to games.

Still with that being said, I have made many life long friends because of games, it gives me some common ground with people I would otherwise not talk to or interact with at all. I agree that as long as we game for entertainment and do not allow games to control us we should be able to balance everything out. Great Video!

they keep you out of drugs for now, but video games are a gateway drug and this is your brain on heroin and cookies... sorry has a 90's psa spasm. good video, some real points were made. i being a father, a husband, a worker and a gamer have to find balance between all of my hobbies (no i dont consider husband, work and father a hobby) and i have many. its just like drinking alcohol, you need to find that delicate balance between fun and fukt up. self control is something the younger generations lack but sooner or later we all hit an epiphany and realize that theres more to life than ourselves

Do u think that playing masaker-y games like GrandTA keep u from ACTUALLY using drugs and shooting people? (it's not sarcasm, I really wanna know).
The same happens to me about game shoping, i guess, but there is at least like 5 games that i wanna get always, so i try to get at least 1 or 2 a year, but i always try to get the one that i think i would like to replay the most, u neeever know when you'll be able to get something fresh.

Lead a BALANCED life, whatever that may mean to you. If you're mature enough to understand what it takes to change yourself then you will appreciate this video and know it's tough to let go.

While the life vs gaming theme might seem to be a little deep don't forget the important part, we play for the experience. It's this "experience" that helps us see things in a new perspective and it doesn't come easy, that's why we keep playing.

You're in as much control over your world/life as you do in a game, so do what makes YOU truly happy. Don't obsess over things and you'll figure out the rest from there.

CirrusEpix, I'm happy for yah.

This makes a good point but a its bit harsh and based completely on
empirical regret. I can say this about anything in excess. Video games
are not the enemy in this argument, extremism is

And the fact that video games aren't real does not mean they have no
beneficial aspects. I'm not saying that they are the end all be all,
but they hold as much value, if not more, then any other medium of
entertainment such as books or movies, not only because they tell us
stories but they allow us to be fully immersed in them

I am not arguing that video games are the best, but they are rationally
not detrimental unless the person playing the game is using them in a
way that is harmfull (ie. playing in extreme blocks like what is
required for WoW raiding)

If you need an empirical example, I am one. I am currently 20 years
old, have played games hardcore all of my life. I am going into second
year university with a 90% average, a great social life, many extra
curriculars I enjoy and I still manage to play an hour or two of video
games most days and stay involved in the harcore gaming community. I
feel fufilled and I still consider gaming a major part of my life

I appreciate the hard work and thought you put into this video, and, ultimately, I would agree with what you are saying. However, near the end, you bring up the idea of the video game community as a "ray of hope,' but I would argue that this is not merely a "ray of hope," but rather the whole point to video gaming. When I think of all of my favorite games, my memories of all of them are linked to real life bonds and friendships that were forged through the common enjoyment of these games. I understand that you are speaking from your own personal experience, and forgive me if I am merely putting words in your mouth, but I feel there is somewhat of an assumption in your video that most gamers see video gaming as the end all be all, which I simply think is not true. Undoubtedly, some people do, but I would suggest that a great majority of gamers enjoy them in healthy, and harmless way. Still, I thought this was a thought provoking and, all in all, good video.

I was among the people who viewed it as an end in itself. I was a fatass from early childhood until well into my teen years. I've only been at a normal weight for the last year or so. I did form some friendships on the basis of my habit but such things were rare-though as I got older it's because I found friends through other interests first and in most cases they were also gamers.

Listening to your story, it is clear that video games had become an unhealthy addiction rather than just "entertainment". The key to living a healthy life is moderation.  It does not matter what the substance is; video games, drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, or even surfing through facebook and twitter.(yes it happens)  If you are addicted to something to the point you that are neglecting your job, school, friends, family or your own health, steps must be taken to end this self-destructive behavior.

I am glad you had the the foresight to realize your Achilles' heel was video games, and that you had the resolve to put an end to its hold over you.  I hope that your message makes it through to others who are in a similar situation.

Moderation is indeed the key, but you should also be aware what Apollo once said: "I believe in moderation in all things, including moderation..."

As for video games, hell most forms of entertainment, I find I can't play more than an hour at a time without taking a break. There are exceptions to this like Resident Evil 4, but finding myself drained after such an experience compells me not to attempt it often.

Perhaps some take moderation to heart or for some there is no other choice. Either way, it is the key to happiness I feel.

Like TheJonman said, the key to anything in life is moderation. A quote from my Organic Chemistry professor. "In toxicology it is assumed that everything is toxic but it depends on the dosage as to whether or not it will kill you." This remains true for consumable substance, and activities alike. Certain things that are otherwise good for you can be lethal in high enough doses. For example if you drink excess water it will cause your bodily fluids to become hypotonic which will cause your cells to burst. (i.e. you'll die)
This logic can be applied to gaming as well. If you play video games moderately the affects can be beneficial to ones self. Allowing some one to de-stress, improve their problem solving skills and motivate them to try new things. In excess however one begins to experience the negative effects of gaming such as lack of physical activity causing obesity, not getting out and enjoying other aspects of life, and potentially bad temperament.
I as an example play video games occasionally probably about 5-10 hours a week and have experienced many positive benefits. After playing games like Zelda and Final Fantasy I was motivated to learn how to use a sword and subsequently joined a fencing team. Motivated by Zelda and my father I learned how to use a compound Bow which I've used quite successfully in hunting deer and rabbit. (I even won $200 In the big buck contest under the bow hunting division). Playing adventure games has also peaked my urge to explore my own world and I now participate in many outdoor sports like Hiking, Snowshoeing, Skiing, Mountain climbing and most of all caving.
Anyhow the point I'm trying to make is that gaming is only detrimental to ones person if they let it be, and, gaming can instead be used to motivate ones self to try many things out in real life as well.

nah it seems that a 100 grain broad-head at high velocity constitutes a lethal dosage. also try not to curse at fellow G1's it's a good way to get banned and if you dislike hunting I hope you don't have anything with meat in it planned for supper

Good God. I'm really conflicted on this. You have valid points, but I want to strangle you and yet hug you at the same time.

I think what it really comes down to is the person themselves. The first half of the video you can apply to just about anything. Not just video games. Most things in life are harmless in and of themselves. But when one puts their "wants", "needs", and "desires" on that thing above everything else is wherein lies the problem. Not the thing itself, but the person.

Yes it would be pointless to make the same video about anything else to post on a video game website. But I feel it's important to remember what you said in the end. Finding the balance between technology improving our lives or risk allowing it to dominate us. But not just gaming or technology. But life itself.

Very, very true. This can be said about pretty much everything..

As for myself I buy all the big games and play them once and that's about it.. I do however spend most of my time on the computer. HOWEVER, I still go to Uni and therefore see myself as a gamer, but, not a hardcore one.
Hell, I have one Platinum Trophy and 9k Achievements after owning both systems for a lengthy period of time (2 Years for 360, Launch for PS3).

This is my feeling exactly. Also, you can't just always work, without any entertainment in your life you're tipping the scale too far in the opposite direction and you'll end up with a lot of similar problems: Depression, Loneliness, ect. Also, games are a great way for friend's to spend time together; while cutting off games you can also shun TV, Movies, and many books.
