This was really handy since I'd never heard most of this.  At least now I have some clue on what order to try a playthrough start to finish.

I
like to think that zelda does not have a single timeline, that there are different
legends, although sometimes I stay with the idea that ocarina of time is
the first and the others are partly xD but this its only my opinion

I agree with carlinho

But if they insist, the order I have is:
Minish Cap
Four swords
(Four Swords sequels)
Ocarina Of Time---------Majoras Mask deviates here, seperate timeline
Wind Waker
Link to the Past
Links Awakening
Legend Of Zelda
Link II

I have no idea where everything else goes....

The order i think it is:

Legend of Zelda                       1st
Zelda 2: Adventure of Link         Link

A Link to the Past
Link's Awakening            2nd
Oracle of Ages                Link
Oracle of Seasons

Twilight Princess        3rd Link

Ocarina Of Time -- Majora's Mask  4th Link

Wind Waker     5th Link

Rest of the ****ty cellshaded games  6th Link

if i can say i dont think there is one time line except zelda and zelda II.
and windwaker, phantom hour glass and the new one to released.
because if you pay attention to the beginning most of the game it says in the game somwhere whether its ganandorf or any one usually say "you are an ancestor of the hero of time" or somthing like that

I agree mostly with the end conclusion. You should look at each game separately instead of as a whole. Also, it saves a lot of confusion to stick with that :p

If Zelda has been put under a sleeping spell then who did Link save in the first game?

I saw an interesting clip from the Overthinker exploring this issue of continuity. You should try and watch it too.

Personally for me, I don't insist on. It's nice if the game's prequel and sequels 'fit' into an overall chronological storyline but there's no need to sweat the small stuff; so long as there is no glaring inconsistencies.

yeah, it is a game, and as carlinho said, they are all different legends. legends change throughout time and you here different variations of them in different regions of the world and in different times. every generation has a new twist on old legends and the same goes for zelda, and i think this is for the better.
