4 Bright Buttons and 2 Joysticks (Rave Remix)

This my entry for the remix contest. I really digged Keith's 4 Bright Buttons and 2 Joysticks song and I've been listening to it over and over. When I heard about the remix contest, I had to do it. Take a listen, and leave a comment, please.

Player won't start? Download it here: http://screwattack.com/downloads/view/4-Bright-Buttons-and-2-Joysticks-Rave-Remix-3

Trying the "Windows 7 Whopper"... IN AMERICA!!!

Been quite a while since I blogged, so I want to start off my first one since the launch of Version 4 with a written response to CheapyD's Windows 7 Whopper video.

When I first saw this video, I was a bit amazed to see that Burger King would promote Microsoft's new operating system by having a Whopper with [of course] 7 patties and having it appropriately named the "Windows 7 Whopper".

"HOLY CRAP!"

Seeing Cheapy and Kev chow down on this monolith of a Whopper (although, there are some larger burgers out somewhere else) made me want to try it out, but unfortunately for me, it's only available in Japan. Seeing that Microsoft is a domestic company, you would think they try and have the offer here in the U.S., but then again, there's that whole "Health Regulation" crap. I guess marketing it in the States is out of the question.

Then one day, during a conversation with my friend, Robert, I showed him the video and was surprised with the burger. He noticed that I left a comment on the CheapyD video about how I would make my own Windows 7 Whopper ("order 2 Triple Whoppers and 1 regular one and put all the patties together in one"), so we decided to go to Burger King the next day to try and special order one (I was planning on coming over to his place that day anyways).

So today, I came over to his house, returned his Wii that I've been borrowing for 2+ months, watched some videos on ScrewAttack and That Guy With The Glasses, and then we made our trip to a nearby Burger King. He went on ahead to order in the drive-thru while I went inside the restaurant to order To Go. So it was my turn to order, I asked the cashier about my "special order" [while giving me a confused look], and said that they can't do it. So I did the next best thing and ordered two Triple Whoppers and a single Whopper (with a value meal) and the total came around $17.50. Though the price makes this dare now sound stupid, at least I'm glad that I'll be trying out this monster Whopper that would guarantee me a big "foodgasm" after devouring it.

So right when we returned to his pad, I went straight to the computer, set all Whoppers down and started building my Whopper and VOILA!!!

"My own Windows 7 Whopper, built from scratch."

Mouth-watering, isn't it? It's not as pretty looking as the one in the poster or as served in The Land of The Rising Sun, but it's something. My friend wanted to take a picture of it, so I grabbed a ruler just for the hell of it, and after many failed takes [stupid batteries!], we took the picture that you see here. While catching up on the latest episode of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, I dug into to my sandwich, while struggling to bite the entire side of the burger.

As soon as the episode was finished, I had wished it would be the same with my burger, only to have eaten half of it. It was also starting to slip as I continued to eat, so I had to grab an extra set of buns to keep from doing so and after an approximate 20 bites, I finished my burger. My friend was staring at me in awe, having eaten an entire 7 patty burger in one sitting. So for fun, we went and check the BK Nutritional Facts online to tally up how much calories, fat, protein, etc. I've eaten and here are the results:
_________________________________________________

Whopper w/ cheese and everything but onions: 670 cal.
Tripple Whopper w/o onions, mayo, ketchup, lettuce, tomato: 1140 cal.
Tripple Whopper, nothing but patties: 720 cal.

Making a Grand Total of 2620 cal., which is almost more than the recommended daily value.

Nutritional Facts:
178g Fat / 67g Saturated Fat / 7.5g Trans Fat / 495mg Cholesterol
99g Carbs / 20g Sugar / 161g Protein / 2830mg Sodium

Source: http://www.bk.com/en/us/menu-nutrition/index.html
_________________________________________________

DAAAAAAMMMMMNNNNNNN!

Looks like this spells "Heart Clogger"! Luckily, nothing has happened to me thus far after eating it (just a couple of restroom trips, that's all). Like Craig, I love Man Vs. Food, and I would imagine myself in that show eating a hundred plates of Fish and Chips, but for a moment, it felt like I was living that fantasy when I was eating that Whopper. Sure, it sounds dumb to compare myself to Adam Richman, and it wouldn't be that tough for him to have one, but I felt like I accomplished something. This is definitely something that I'll never do again, but at least I can remember by the next time I munch on a burger for the rest of my life.

Rockin' Deal: How I got Rock Band 1/2 and ACDC Live for just $79. [$87 w/ CA tax]

[Blogger's Note: rockband79.com does not offer AC/DC Live track pack anymore, but Rock Band 2 is still included in the bundle.]

Peripheral music games now-a-days are so expensive (Just look at the Limited Edition bundle of The Beatles: Rock Band), sure it costs a lot more to produce these devices, but at least you get your money's worth for the experience. Unfortunately, I barely have a job and live off of EDD unemployment insurance checks. Fortunately, I discovered an ad on GameTrailers one day offering Rock Band: Special Edition with Rock Band 2 for $80, and it also included FREE shipping [although I had to pay the damn tax, which sucks for me, who happens to live in budget-****** California] and at the time, they were also throwing in the AC/DC Live track pack.

This offer was too good to pass up, but the thing was... I don't own neither a PS3 nor 360. Then again, I happen to own Rock Band, Rock Band 2, and Guitar Hero: Metallica for the PS2 just because I had the Guitar Hero guitars for it already, which is good, because the Rock Band instruments for the PS3 are compatible with the PS2. I was in luck, so I went ahead and ordered myself the PS3 version, and a week later, *BAM!*, UPS came to the door with my package!

I was so happy, when I got my Rock Band bundle, I immediately went to the kitchen to grab a knife to open up my package, set up the drums, fired up Guitar Hero: Metallica and played "For Whom The Bell Tolls" on Expert drums. OH, HAPPY DAY! Sure, I don't have use for the PS3 games for now, but when I get my PS3 Slim, at least I'll have Rock Band ready to play.

If you want to take advantage of this deal, go ahead! Go to http://www.rockband79.com and order Rock Band: Special Edition with Rock Band 2 (360 or PS3) plus FREE SHIPPING for just $80 [$87 w/ CA sales tax].

My ScrewAttack theme for FireFox. [using AnyColor add-on]

I was bored, so I downloaded the Any-Color add-on for FireFox. I created a few color schemes for fun, but I also made a special theme for my favorite video game website, ScrewAttack.com.

I've made two versions of this.

A black version: [which matches both my black vista theme and TwitterFox color]
http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc80/prosk8er95116/Etc/ScrewAttackthemeblack.jpg

And another that matches the color of the site.
http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc80/prosk8er95116/Etc/ScrewAttacktheme.jpg

Cool, huh?

Pray no more! ZIMdudeAlchemist's brother has returned safely!!!

At the very moment I'm typing this, my brother has returned home after 6 days from leaving home. I've never felt so glad and angry at the same time. You know, after all this time, trying to find him, I've been having flashback of the time I spent with him and I remember that we were always into playing video games back then, and it's given me an idea on a blog about my gaming memories with my family.
I want to thank all of you who have supported my cause, and left all those nice comments from that last blog. ScrewAttack is the greatest gaming community, and I couldn't ask for a better site to look for some support.

I <img src="http://i.screwattack.com/portal_screwattack/default/smiley_heart.gif" alt="<3" style="verical-align:-3px;padding-left:2px;" border="0" width="15" height="15" /> YOU ALL!

Sincerely,
ZIMdudeAlchemist

P.S. Yes, this means I'm back on the site! =D

Taking a leave of absence from ScrewAttack

Hey ZIMdude here, and I want to let you all know why I'll be gone from the site for, at least, a couple of weeks. Since Monday, my younger brother hasn't returned home, and my family and I are getting worried about him. I've been searching around and talking to his friends about when they last seen him, where they think he might be, but so far, I have no luck. The next best best thing that we had to do was to call the police and file a Missing Persons Report for him. I think it is best for me if I take a break from ScrewAttack for the next two weeks to dedicate my time to finding my brother. So far, I've gotten replies from the g1s on Twitter, rooting me on for my cause and I can't think of a better site that has given me so much support. I know my brother is there somewhere and I have to keep searching.

Wish me luck!

Album Review: I Fight Dragons - Cool Is Just A Number (EP)

*FAIR WARNING: This week (Monday 7/27 through Sunday 8/2) is the last week to receive the album for free when you subcribe to I Fight Dragon's newsletter. As of Monday, August 3rd, the free album will be replaced with a sampler of two songs from their album and two web newsletter tracks. SO ACT FAST!!!*

Hey g1s, ZIMdude here!
As much as I love video games, I also have a soft spot for music. When I'm not gaming, no matter the genre, I just turn up the tunes and listen away. Hell, I even carry my MP3 player everytime I'm not home and it helps to avoid hearing awkward conversations about smoking pot when I'm riding the bus. We know that when you combine video games and music, you get Music Games such as Parappa The Rapper, DDR, and Guitar Hero, but what if a band combines an Alternative Rock sound and mix it with 8-Bit chiptune music, you get I Fight Dragons.

I Fight Dragons is an up and coming "NES-Rock" band from Chicago, IL that performs both real instruments such as the usual bass and electric guitar, and drums, but they also use NES chiptunes along side (they even use controllers, and periphirals to play the chiptunes at live shows). Formed in 2008, I Fight Dragons had consisted of:
*Brian (Lead Vocals, Guitar, NES controller)
*Mike (Vocals, Guitar, SNES controller
*Hari (Bass, NES)
*Laura (Vocals, NES, SNES, and NES Advantage, Power Pad, Cowbell)
*Dave (Drums, NES)
*Bill (Vocals, Keys, NES, NES Advantage, Power Glove, NES Zapper, and in some shows, Guitar Hero controller)

But just recently, I came across their newsletter saying that Mike had left IFD to pursue a solo career. [Edit] Fortunatly, they have now found their new guitarist, Packy Lundholm, who gave the fans an awesome introduction with his interpretation of the Air Man theme from Mega Man 2.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AATp6VdWhz8

IFD already has an album out, Cool Is Just A Number, which you can buy on both their site (http://www.ifightdragons.com) for $4.99 and on iTunes (don't know if it's the same price), but since I'm a broke MoFo, they do have an option to subscribe to their newsletter on their site and receive the free EP version of Cool Is Just A number, which is what I'm reviewing on this blog.

Without further adieu, here's the review of the Cool Is Just A Number EP by I Fight Dragons

Track 1: Intro
There wasn't a clip on TheSixtyOne.com, but all I can tell you is that it has a very nostalgic opening. Imagine yourself, starting up an NES, listening to an opening song (which is an original composition), you press Start and the album begins! A very cool idea for an album intro if I say so, myself.

Track 2: The Faster The Treadmill

This is a very good song to start off the album and I love how it builds up in beginning. It has a very catchy chorus and the lyrics deal the average struggle of people always disagreeing about your lifestyle and make you feel discouraged, but the song has that positive sound that makes you want to just stay optimistic and ignore the bad things in life. (Honestly, I'm not all that good at interpreting lyrics, but that's just how it makes me feel) =D

Track 3: Money

A personal favorite of mine, and here's the reason why... that awesome breakdown around the last quarter of the song. The lyrics obviously deal with, of course, money, but there's a little more to it. It tells of how much of an affect it has on greedy d-bags (i.e. Donald Trump, or maybe even the RIAA) if you were in their shoes.

Track 4: Head Up, Hearts Down

This one is like one of those songs that I just want to play when I'm in a really happy mood with it's upbeat sound. It's also one of those songs that I like the music so much, I have no time to listen to the lyrics, it's THAT good. =D

Track 5: No One Likes Superman Anymore

This song starts off light with some bleeps and bloops, but then it suddenly ROARS with a hard mixture of kickass drum and guitar play. The words to this song contains a very questionable look on society, about how sometimes the actions of good people don't matter in the eyes of everyone else in the world, and that's a damn shame.

Track 6: With You

A very calm, nicely done track, and to me, kinda reminds me of No Doubt's "Running". Some people might be thrown off this one since it's a love song, but hey, if I wanted to, I would love to put this in a mixtape for a special girl on Valentine's Day. (I'm corny that way, son!) B)

Overall, this is a great album, especially since it's free, and I love this whole experimentation with combining Rock and retro game tunes. I'm not so fond of giving letter and number scores, but all I want to say is if you really enjoyed, you should deffinatly download this album NOW (before it's taken down from the newsletter)!

Is the G1 Attack podcast making a comeback? =D

I encountered a blog from TheGamerChef (aka Opinionated Troy of the G1 Attack podcast) saying that he has now made a new website (g1attack.com), but there wasn't much to do with the hit g1-made podcast of the same name from last summer. So I suggested Troy if he needed the old episodes for a special archive section, he accepted and I've uploaded all the old G1 Attack episodes onto PodOmatic. Then later on, I received an email that Troy was working on bringing back the podcast for the site. There were some complications, since most of the hosts have gave up on the show, but afterall at least there happened to be two hosts that are now coming back for the new season: Zornox (Joystick Jerry) and our lovable animator, HyperJerk.

So to answer the question on the title: Is the G1 Attack podcast making a comeback? YES! It's coming back, and from what I heard from Troy yesterday, they're recording the first episode TODAY!

So look for the new G1 Attack around this or next week.

Oh I forgot, for that archive of old episodes go to http://g1attack.podomatic.com or http://www.g1attack.com/archive.html

I haven't got a chance to have to watch the entire memorial because my dad dragged me out to look for work, but I have finally found the recorded version on the CNN site. I have linked the video here in case you have also missed the event. Comment this blog to pay your respects to The King of Pop.

Oh, by the way, if you want to skip on all the commentary, skip ahead to 11:50 to start at the beginning of the ceremony.

The G1 Attack Podcast archives!

For those who don't remember, or are not aware of this, the G1 Attack podcast was THE very first g1-made podcast that began on July 2008, but had suddenly ended around September of 2008. Unfortunately, the site that had originaly hosted the podcast had expired, along with the files of each episode, but luckily, I still had the entire podcast on my hard drive. So to celebrate the 1 Year Anniversary of the podcast and coinciding with the g1 Attack website (run by former G1 Attack host, Opinionated Troy), I've re-uploaded the podcast episodes to PodOmatic as a special archive page.

Re-experience the best thing g1 community has to offer, the G1 Attack podcast!

PROS & CONS: Guitar Hero: Metallica (PlayStation 2 version)

This is my first "review" here on the ScrewAttack blog and I think it's best to start off with a game I just recently bought this past weekend (after finding out about the price drop on CheapAssGamer.com). Unfortunately, I do not own any next-generation consoles, but the only two platforms I play my games, at the moment, are a PlayStation 2 and PC.

Let me give a background of my history with series. I've been a fan of the Guitar Hero games since I've first tried the demo of the first one back at FanimeCon 2005 (days before being showcased at E3), and I loved the game from then on. GH II, Rocks The 80's, III, and Aerosmith were great improvements to the series, but when I got Guitar Hero: World Tour, it was bit of a disappointment. It was cool that it took the full band approach (ala Rock Band), but the song choices weren't all that good, (since I had the PS2 version) the quality of the PS2 port was bad, and load times were a *****. Ever since Guitar Hero: Metallica has came out, I was really psyched about this game, and I hoped that the production of the PS2 port will be better than World Tour.

Now let me tell the good points of the PS2 version of Guitar Hero: Metallica.

*Of course, being a fan of Metallica, Metal, Classic Rock and Alternative music, the set list is simply amazing.
*The Metallifacts feature is such an intriguing addition to the game, and gives fun factoids about Metallica and the guest bands for each song (before I got this game, I was afraid this feature wasn't going to be on the PS2 version).
*The character models, including the entire Metallica crew (James, Kirk, Lars, and Rob) look great and the lighting goes well with the stages.
*Since this version lacks online support, the game includes three tracks from Metallica's latest album Death Magnetic (that includes "Broken, Beat & Scarred", "Cyanide", and "My Apocalypse") which is a sweet bonus.
*Supports all Rock Band instruments (Guitar, Drums, Mic), and Progressive Scan TVs (480p)

Now let's point out the bad about the PS2 version of GH:M

*The graphics (aside from the character models) just plain suck. The developers of this port were just too lazy to convert stage models, so they stick to pre-rendered videos of the stages off the PS3 version (which could be the reason behind this next point)
*Varied load times. Maybe it's just my PS2, but most of the time the game loads so slow. It's not just "slow", it takes about a whole minute to start up the game and 30-45 seconds just to load ONE SONG! At other times, it loads okay, as the time decreases about 15-25 seconds less. It's like either the game or my system likes to load fast when it wants to.
*The game is only displayed in 16:9 widescreen mode, and does not include an option for 4:9 full screen. It's not much an issue for those who own a widescreen TV, but if you do own a regular CRT TV (even though you don't have to worry about video lag), you might have a hard time reading the note charts.
*NO ONLINE SUPPORT! I'm really disappointed that they never took advantage of the PS2's semi-active online capabilities. I don't think Budcat (the developers behind this port) should be the only ones to blame, what about Sony? [Going a little off-topic now] Even til this day, Sony continues to sell the PlayStation 2, and it's become the biggest, and most cheapest console on the market, but the problem is that Sony still has the nerve to provide the PS2 with a Broadband internet output in the back of the console still. You may be wondering, "why am I so pissed about this?" Because most or [possibly] every game that had included online play don't work anymore because Sony mostly focuses on the PS3's online service rather than the PS2. That is such a kick in the nuts for those (including me) that still want to game on the PS2 online, because there's plenty of awesome games to play online, like TimeSplitters: Future Perfect, Metal Gear Solid Online (via MGS3: Subsistance), Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition, Tony Hawk's Underground, Final Fantasy XI. -rant over-

For the most part, aside from all of the bad from the game, I still find this game to be one of the best Guitar Hero games to date.
So here's my final verdict:

If you feel like you won't be upgrading to a new system anytime soon, but want a new Guitar Hero game to play on your PS2, go ahead and buy it if you want. But if you get bothered to easily with meh graphics and long load times, make it a rental. In case you are planning on getting a PS3, 360, or even a Wii soon, I recommend to ditch this version and get one of the three new consoles.

That's my PROS and CONS review of Guitar Hero: Metallica for the PS2. Thanks for reading!

Earlier today, I send an email to the developer company of the PlayStation 2 port of Guitar Hero: Metallica, regarding the pre-rendered venues they used in the game, and I here the letter I sent:
------------------------------
From: zimdudealchemist@yahoo.com
Sent: Monday, June 08, 2009 4:33 PM
To: GRP Budcat - Resume
Subject: GH: Metallica for PS2 question

I own the PlayStation 2 version of Guitar Hero: Metallica, which you all have developed for. First off, I want to say I really enjoy the game and it's one of the best of the whole Guitar Hero series. But I got one question that's been bugging me for a while that I really want to ask. Why go for the pre-rendered video approach rather than using actual 3D graphics for the stages of the game like your company did with the Wii version? I just thought it seems a bit lazy of you all to not take the time to make it that way for the PS2 version. I'm just voicing my opinion, that's all.
Aside from that lacking feature, once again, I still enjoy the game and I wish you all the best of luck in your next project.

Sincerely,
Jose Quintero <- that's my real name, foo'z!

--------------------------

I just got a reply from one of the designers at Budcat, and they had replied:

--------------------------
Hi Jose,

I appreciate your feedback regarding the venues. You are correct, the cameras are not as dynamic in PS2 as they are on other platforms. The PS2 is an aging system, has much less rendering power than even a Nintendo Wii. If the venues were made to be polygonal we would have to make a huge compromise on the characters. The bone counts and polygon counts would have to be much lower. Overall the characters would look much worse in terms of their visual quality. With lower bone counts the animations would be much more stiff than they are now.

I doubt that there’s anything I can say that’s really going to satisfy you here. Everything is a compromise, and it’s difficult to make everyone happy.

Best Regards,
Jason Andersen

----------------------------

Wow... he made a good point. I guess the PS2 isn't as great as it used to be anymore when it comes to improving the quality of the graphics. So what do you all think about this?

J-Rock Song of The Week (4/8/09)

Last week's song of the week was Straightener's "ALIBI", which I recently discovered in the Nano-Mugen Compilation 2008 CD, a compilation of songs from bands around Japan, Europe, and U.S that, at the time of release, were playing at the yearly Nano-Mugen Festival concert.
This week's song is coming straight from the band that formed and headlined this festival, Asian Kung-Fu Generation, known for their songs "Haruka Kanata" (opening song for Naruto), "Rewrite" (FullMetal Alchemist OP), and "After Dark" (Bleach OP). This band is no stranger to the J-Rock scene, they're one of the most successful J-Rock bands, and every year they pump out amazing singles.
The song I'm choose is "Korogaru Iwa, Kimi ni Asa ga Furu". This is, by far, one of the best songs that the band has ever produced and it's worth a listen every time.

My Wish List for Guitar Hero: Greatest Hits (video)

Top g1 Post (3/30/09)
------------------------------------------------
If you didn't know, there will be ANOTHER Guitar Hero game coming this year, Guitar Hero: Greatest Hits. Like the title implies, YES, this is a compilation of songs from the past Guitar Hero games (Guitar Hero, Guitar Hero II, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, and Guitar Hero: Rock The 80's).

This is a list I compiled of songs that should be on GH: Greatest Hits, in my opinion.
Some songs didn't make the cut because they're already included Rock Band 1+2 or Guitar Hero: Metallica (with the exception of some), OR I try not to pick all high tier songs.

Here are the 8 songs that have been already announced:
"Barracuda" by Heart (GH3)
"I Love Rock 'n Roll" by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts (GH)
"I Wanna Rock" by Twisted Sister (GH 80's)
"Killer Queen" by Queen(GH)
"Killing In The Name Of" by Rage Against The Machine (GH2)
"Nothin' But A Good Time" by Poison (GH 80's)
[I forgot that "Nothin" was already announced when I was making the list, my bad!]
"Them Bones" by Alice In Chains (GH2)
"Through The Fire And Flames" by Dragonforce (GH3)

ENJOY!

By the way, the song at the end is "Black Hole Sun (Instrumental version)" by Soundgarden

J-Rock Song of The Week (4/1/09)

Another week, another great J-Rock song to showcase!

This week's song comes from a band that I have just recently heard of, STRAIGHTENER, and the song I choose instantly made me a fan of this band. The fast-pased drumming, harmonic guitar, and upbeat bass are what make this song so satisfying to listen to.

This's week's song is "ALIBI" by STRAIGHTENER.

Sorry, I couldn't find any lyrics nor translations to this song this week. (I really do need to learn Japanese) =(

J-Rock Song of The Week (3/25/09)

The "J-Rock Song of The Week", a new weekly blog that I've just started today! =D If you're a fan of Japanese Rock [like me], feel like listening to something out of the ordinary, then my weekly pick of J-Rock goodness would guarantee to entertain you for about a few minutes of your time. Sure, I may not what know the singer is talking about [translations/lessons help], but the music is all that matters here.

Now on to my first pick of the week! If you're a fan of the anime, FLCL [Furu Kuri/Fooly Cooly], you might recognize this band, The Pillows. Yup, those guys that did "Ride on Shooting Star" and all their other songs from the show. If it weren't for FLCL, I would have been missing out on their awesome music. I've started listening to their other non-FLCL songs, and damn, do they deliver the goods!

This week's song is from their most recent album "PIED PIPER". No Surrender is one of the coolest songs I've heard from this album. ENJOY!

Lyrics: (Japanese Romaji, not a translation)

[SURE! You might think downloading this song is concidered "illegal", but if its not sold in the U.S./Europe or any other country outside Japan, then we deserve the right to download it!]

First 6 Minutes of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars (DS)

A YouTube user pirated a copy of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars on one of those homebrew flash carts (such as R4DS, M3 Movie Player, etc.). Shame on him for not buying, what could be, the greatest DS game ever, but least its nice to see some gameplay footage (that's NOT a trailer) before the game comes out Tuesday, March 17th.

What you are watching is the full intro of the game, and I gotta admit, I'm impressed. Sure it doesn't have voiceovers, but that kind of brings me back to the first 2 GTAs.

ENJOY!
(I recommend watching it in Hi-Quality fullscreen.)

DISCOVERY! Video of Unreleased Rock Band DLC: "Pick Up The Pieces"

I was doing my weekly browsing on the Rock Band DLC list on Wikipedia and one of the upcoming songs on the list came to my attention... "Pick Up The Pieces" by Average White Band. Who would've thought that Harmonix is now branching out on Funk music in their library. So, I felt like listening to the song via YouTube, and after searching the song... there was already a result for gameplay footage of the upcoming DLC. I thought it would be Rick Roll, but I decided to check it out, and would you believe it? It's actual guitar/drum chart footage of the song! =)
Here the story behind this video. YouTube user "rbmetalicker" found the track on the European PlayStation Network Store, which was accidently leaked for a moment, until it was removed by Harmonix. He's pretty damn to get the song before it was quickly pulled.

Here's the video of the upcoming DLC!
ENJOY! =)

God, I love the drums on this song! I can't wait to try it when it comes out.

Help make Stan Bush's "The Touch" a DLC for Rock Band and/or Guitar Hero

I just went on the This Week In Geek site to download my weekly dose of the TWIG podcast and there I saw a link for a petition about making "The Touch" a downloadble song on Rock Band/Guitar Hero. Some of your might remember this song from the 1986 Transformers movie. After I first watched this movie about month ago, I fell in love with the song [I thank Birdman for recommending this movie in first place]. Hell yeah this song deserves to be a DLC for RB/GH, and I want you all, the g1s, to help support this cause.

(I Think I'm) Turning Japanese

It seems that Japanese pop culture has been expanding so quickly around the globe, from anime to its music. Now I became a victim of the “J-Invasion” here in America, and I’m one of those rare Mexican “otakus” (anime fanatics) who wears a Fullmetal Alchemist tee, Naruto “leaf village” wristband, and listens to Asian Kung-Fu Generation and Orange Range (Japanese bands) on my MP3 player.

Anime was the first thing I got into since ’96 and Dragon Ball Z was the one anime show that got me into it til' this day. It’s already been 10 years since I fell in love with this different style of animation and so far, there has been a whole lot of great anime that I’ve seen, like Initial D, Tenchi Muyo, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, FLCL, Love Hina, and Hellsing. My favorite anime, currently, are Fullmetal Alchemist, Samurai Champloo, Lucky Star, Honey + Clover and Welcome To The NHK.

Then I got hooked on Japanese music in 2003, but I mainly got into J-Rock ever since I heard a band called The Pillows in the anime, FLCL (or Furi Kuri). As the years passed, I’ve been finding out about more good J-Rock bands, for example, Peelander Z, X-Japan, Chatmonchy, FLOW, ZZ, Goofy Style, Mothercoat, and Dir-en-Grey. All these bands are great, but to me, The Pillows, L’Arc~en~Ciel, Orange Range, and Asian Kung-Fu Generation are each one of the greatest bands I’ve heard on the J-Rock scene.

Sadly, none of my friends back in high school were into this kind of stuff, so I go to anime conventions, like FanimeCon (here in San Jose). It’s held at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center every Memorial Day weekend and it’s a great place to make friends and socialize with fellow fans, J-Rockers, gamers, and cosplayers (people who dress as a favorite anime/video game character). There are lots of things to do and events to go to, such as, anime screening rooms, Asian cinema rooms, Anime Music Video (AMV) contests, buying merchandise like CDs, DVDs, manga comics, etc., playing games at their arcade/E-Gaming room, panels, Karaoke, anime marathons, MusicFest (a concert of independent bands and artists from Japan), and more.

I even saw a documentary the other day on the Travel Channel about the lifestyles, gadgets, houses, food, and nightlife of Japan, and I pondered to myself, “I wish I’d live in Japan, and then live would just be great.” I can imagine myself living on my own in a Japanese apartment, playing at massively-large arcades, going to J-Rock concerts, meeting pretty Japanese girls, and hiking up Mt. Fuji. The gadgets they have there are so amazing, cells phones that use video for phone conversations, toilet seats that also cleans the bowl, and all the games that I could never find or play here in the U.S.

It goes to show you that you don’t have to be Japanese to experience their culture. Hell, I even converted from using a fork to using chopsticks when eating noodles or rice. Since Japan has adapted some U.S. and European styled culture, it’ll be cool to make it even and get to know their culture, too. Besides, we live in America, every single race and culture is here, and it should be a right to live anyway we want to. Here’s my moral, we shouldn’t be afraid to act different, because there’s always other people like you out there that enjoy the same things you do.

New Remix - Streets of Rage Opening (ReArrange)

My first remix... more-so, remake of 2009! I was originaly going to do a remix of the first stage of Final Fight, then I realised that I grew up playing the Genesis before getting an SNES. I was stuck with making the Opening of Streets of Rage instead, just because how I love how the song builds up from a smooth synth/guitar beggining to an awesome hip-hop beat.

ENJOY!

New Remix - Heavy Fray (Tales of Eternia/Destiny II [US])

Rock Remix of "Celestia Battle" from Tales of Eternia/Tales of Destiny II (U.S.) for the PlayStation.

This took me one helluva month to put it together, due to time constraints and many hours wasted on Rock Band. Since this is my first rock mix, its was kinda difficult to pull off because of the drum portions, but here it is!
I hope you guys enjoy it! =)

PowerPoint presentation: "The Evolution of Video Games"

I did this for an end of the year project for my Multimedia class in high school. I found it in my old flash drive that was under my bed [i had no idea it got there] for a few months and I thought it'll be great to share this to you, the g1 community. Though it maybe not be precisely accurate information, the research I did for this was excruciatingly long, but I think, in a way, it paid off. ENJOY!
[P.S. I apologize in advance for not including PC games in any of the sections, I was aiming towards consoles.]

THE EVOLUTION OF VIDEO GAMES
By: ZIMdudeAlchemist [Jose Quintero in the PowerPoint]

THE ORIGIN OF THE VIDEO
In 1951, Ralph Baer, a 27-year-old TV engineer, was asked by his boss to “build the best television set in the world,” and thus created the concept of playing games on a television. Since then, he started making prototypes of his invention, therefore, he has been credited as the inventor of the video game.
One year later, the first playable video game, simply named “OXO” (aka Noughts and Crosses), was an electronic version of Tic-Tac-Toe created by Alexander S. Douglas for an EDSAC (see below). It was originally written for a Ph.D. thesis on human-computer interaction for the University of Cambridge and is the first game to run on a computer. Then in 1958, physicist William Higinbotham developed a type of tennis/ping-pong simulator, known as Tennis for Two, on an analog computer. Tennis for Two was considered to be the predecessor of the popular arcade game, Pong.

1st GENERATION
After Baer approached various TV manufacturing companies to submit his idea, Magnavox made an agreement with Baer to develop a television game device, and produced the Magnavox Odyssey (the first ever home game console).
The arcade gaming scene had slowly began when Nolan Bushnell created the first coin operated game, Computer Space (based on an earlier game, Spacewar!), but was a complete failure. After Bushnell witnessed a demo for the Odyssey, he hired Al Alcorn after he founded Atari Inc. and produced an arcade port of a ping-pong game on the Odyssey, called Pong in 1972. Pong became a commercial success in the early 70’s, but since the idea was taken from the Odyssey version without Magnavox’s consent, Atari was later sued and had to pay licensing fees to the company as a result. Atari paved the way to up and coming gaming innovations in the coming years.

2nd GENERATION
Cartridge-based consoles have made a return after the surge of stand alone Pong consoles. In 1976, the Fairchild Channel F was the first system to include a Central Processing Unit (CPU) built in, but it’s appeal only lasted for about 3 years. Then in 1977, Atari released their first cartridge-based game console, the Atari 2600, and it dominated the gaming market for a good 6 years with a span of 15 (longer than any other system).
Arcades have been popping up in many metropolitan areas, with the growing popularity various titles, such as Asteroids, Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, and Space Invaders. Many other consoles have been competing against the 2600, such as the Magnavox Odyssey², Mattel Intellivision, Milton Bradley Vectrex, ColecoVision, and Sega SG-1000 (the first Japanese produced game console). Even though the industry had barely began, it’s recent bloom of newer games and consoles caused a brief & temporary downfall.

U.S. VIDEO GAME CRASH OF 1983
Also known as the video game crash of 1984, due to decreased consumer interest in video games during that year. The mass market competition of consoles, and low-quality games (such as the Atari 2600 port of Pac-Man) caused many developing companies to file for bankruptcy due to the lack of sales. There had been many factors to these failures, but the most common were the flood of other systems on the market like the Atari 5200, Fairchild Channel F System II, Coleco Gemini, and computer consoles, like the Commodore 64.
The increased console selection left consumers with a dilemma over what’s best to buy. Though the Atari 2600 had a fair selection of games at the time, most of them were too repetitive, and in some cases, have became lacking in quality (for example, E.T. for the Atari 2600, which is considered to be one of the worst video games of all-time). Everything went downhill for game companies until in 1985, when a new console from outside the States would later change the world of gaming and resurrect the industry.

3rd GENERATION
The video game industry was back on it’s feet after the release of the Nintendo Entertainment System (or the NES) on October 18th, 1985, surprising gamers with it’s superior graphics, simple controls, and the best games to ever grace the system, such as Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Contra, Mega Man, Final Fantasy, Bomberman, Metroid, Castlevania, and much more. From there on, the rest of the competition was swept away, but in Japan, Nintendo and Sega (with it’s Master System) have been going at it, neck and neck in both game and system sales.
It was at this point in time that video games have been used and/or referenced in mainstream media, for example, video game-themed TV shows such as The Super Mario Super Show, and Buckner & Garcia’s 1982 pop single “Pac-Man Fever”. Gaming went from a childhood fad to a worldwide phenomenon in a matter of years. Soon, a new, but short-lived, console sheds new light into the next generation by multiplying 8-bit graphics by two.

4th GENERATION
In August 1989, a new console came onto the scene with a newly developed 16-bit Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), the NEC TurboGrafx-16. The Sega Genesis had also been released in the same year and month with both 16-bit CPU and GPU chips, which makes graphics and gameplay run better than both the NES and TG-16 at the time, until in 1991, Nintendo moved away from its 8-bit roots, and released the Super Nintendo (or SNES). The SNES impacted the console industry with its arcade-like graphics, high quality sound, and had a larger library of games than the Genesis. Arcades were still going strong after the release of Street Fighter II, one of the most influential fighting games of all-time, and was such a huge success, it was ported to many consoles, including the Super Nintendo. Mortal Kombat made it’s debut a year after Street Fighter came out, and it’s voilent content led organizations and companies to create a rating system for each game that’s released.
Sega also had a following with it’s Genesis, games like Sonic The Hedgehog, Strider, Phantasy Star II, Gunstar Heroes, and Shinobi were huge hits on the console. A year later, in 1992, in a way to compete with the SNES, Sega released the Sega CD (a CD add-on for the Genesis). It enhanced the Genesis with slightly improved graphics performance, audio CD music, and full motion video capabilities. Only a decent amount of Sega CDs games succeeded, such as Mortal Kombat, Final Fight, Lunar, and the critically-acclaimed, Sonic CD. But the Sega CD didn’t receive much praise from game critics, and and the later failed, 32X add-on, led gamers to convert to the Super Nintendo, giving Nintendo the lead advantage.
The Super Nintendo was on a roll in the early 90’s, with it’s big name hits such as Super Mario World, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Metroid, Donkey Kong Country, Chrono Trigger, Super Mario Kart, Mortal Kombat II, Street Fighter II Turbo, and StarFox (the first full 3D game on the SNES). While 3D arcade games were all the rage, both Sega & Nintendo were also working on a new 3D gaming system, and a popular Japanese tech company has also joined in on the console fray.

5th GENERATION
Though there were 3 earlier consoles that moved onto 3D gaming, none were as great as these three newcomers. In 1995, Sega had moved one dimension higher with the new Saturn and Sony arrived on the gaming scene with the PlayStation. Both consoles had advanced 3D graphics and a higher storage medium (with the use of compact discs), but the Saturn, at the time, seemed to emphasize more on 2D games and arcade ports rather than original/full 3D games like the PlayStation. A year later, Nintendo launched the Nintendo 64, along with Super Mario 64.
The Saturn was the first to discontinue in 1998, so Nintendo and Sony were the main contenders. The PlayStation was the highest selling console at the time, and had a variety of hit titles, like Final Fantasy VII, Gran Turismo, Resident Evil, and Crash Bandicoot. The N64 also had its share of popular games such as, GoldenEye 007, F-Zero X, Mario Kart 64, Yoshi’s Story, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (receiving the highest review score average than any game). Sega would soon return with a new system that would give gamers a taste of realism.

6th GENERATION
Sega released the Dreamcast on September 1999, and gamers were stunned when they had a glimpse at it’s high-resolution graphics, and realistic gameplay. The Dreamcast was the first console to commercially introduce online gameplay, which enabled people with a 56k dial-up connection to compete against friends around the world. Then the PlayStation 2 arrived on October 2000, and it’s mass appeal and sales outnumbered the Dreamcast and eventually seized production in 2001. Though it was short-lived, the Dreamcast left behind a legacy in the gaming world.
The PlayStation 2 started off well with the addition of DVD playback and a few early titles, like Tekken Tag Tournament, Silent Hill 2, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, and Gran Turismo 3. The PS2 had beaten it’s predecessor [the PlayStation] in number of worldwide sales by 38 million (140 million units in total sales), and a highly controversial game was the cause of the increased sales. A year later, Grand Theft Auto III was released on the PS2 and once again led to more controversey amongst violent content in videos games.
In 2001, Nintendo produced the Gamecube, then Microsoft got into the console war with their Xbox console. The Gamecube went for a family-friendly approach with games, like Luigi’s Mansion, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Mario Sunshine, and Metroid Prime, while the Xbox was targeting a more mature demographic with Project Gotham Racing, Amped, Dead or Alive 3, and their benchmark title, Halo. Both the PlayStation 2 and Xbox were on par in terms of quality, but the Gamecube was just standing behind the crowd.
In 2002, Microsoft launched the Xbox Live online service, and after the release of Halo 2, it became the largest online gaming community in the world. In the same year, Sony released a Network Adapter for the PlayStation 2, though it wasn’t as popular as the Xbox Live, SOCOM: Navy Seals was the most played PlayStation 2 network game. As television technology has progressed, video games have now made it’s huge step into the new generation.

7th GENERATION/PRESENT DAY
On November 22, 2005, Microsoft had launched their latest Next-Generation console, the Xbox 360. The booming sales of High-Definition TV sets was the inspiration for Microsoft’s new HD gaming system, and was finally able to produce life-like quality graphics, specially made for HDTV sets. A year later, in 2006, Sony released the PlayStation 3 with it’s high-end Cell Broadband Engine for higher detailed graphics and Blu-Ray movie playback. The Cell microprocessor, 1080p HD compatibility and Blu-Ray disc format gave developers the leading edge to give PS3 players a unique gameplay experience than that of the 360.
In the same year, Nintendo broke new ground in the industry with the Nintendo Wii. It’s interactive motion-sensing controls and family-oriented audience gained attention from many common consumers. The popularity of the Nintendo Wii made it the best selling console of this generation (selling around 400,000 more than than the Xbox 360), and it’s games, such as Wii Sports (bundled with the console), The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and downloadable Virtual Console games made it the prime winner of the Next-Gen era.

CONCLUSION
From dots and blips to polygons and textures, whether you’re basting off Galaga bugs in the arcades, or jamming out with friends on Rock Band, these innovations have brought gaming to the masses over the years. Who knew that one simple concept of interacting with a TV would evolve to an alternative medium of entertainment (with the affordability of games during this economic crisis)? The video game industry has a bright future ahead.

New Remix STILL in Work In Progress stage! (+ preview commentary)

Hey g1s, ZIMdudeAlchemist here! I've been rather busy lately with my college prep homework, and looking for work during this screwed up recession which makes it difficult, since most available positions that I've applied for here in San Jose have been taken [sucks, huh?]. I never have enough time for most of my free activities, such as forum postings, the ScrewAttack chat, gaming, and working on my remixes. So far, I've completed a quick rearrangement of the Able Sisters theme from Animal Crossing: Wild World, which turned out okay, but I was kinda disappointed that this one hasn't caught on.

The main point about this blog is about an upcoming remix project I'm doing, and it's, by far, the most difficult one I've ever produced. My last few remixes emphasized on the Hip-Hop and Drum & Bass genres, but for the next one, I'll be rockin' it out! That's right... it's gonna be a Rock remix! About the song that I'm doing, I'm not sure if the majority of g1s would ever recognize this song because it's from a game that was released during the PlayStation's peak in 2001. The good news is that its from one of the "Tales of..." RPG games and that game is Tales of Eternia (otherwise know in the U.S. release as Tales of Destiny II due to copyright reasons *COUGHhe-manCOUGH!*). The song that I've chosen from this epic RPG is the way more kickass, Celectia Battle theme. Since this is currently a "Work In Progress", I might as well give you the skinny on how it's being made, as well as the tweaks and additions I made to the song.

Week I
------

This one's pretty much the bare bones of the song, and since this is the first time I'll be doing my own drum beats on a Piano Roll, this makes the process slightly more difficult because I'm not too good at recreating REAL beats. I tried my best to match it from the one in the game's soundtrack, but when all else fails, I can just improvise. The guitar wasn't that hard to do, but it sounded too much like a MIDI sound bite, so I had to try a different method to make it sound somewhat realistic. The bass and rhythm guitar weren't ready yet, so they were cut.

Week II
-------

I added an echo/reverb effect for the guitar that sound as close to the game's version and added some hammer-ons (I Learned it from spending a ludicrous amount of time playing Guitar Hero/Rock Band). I even finished up the rhythm guitar sounds to give it that harmonizing sound, and only did a small loop for the bass [I was in a rush, so I didn't have time to work on a lot of the bass track].

Week III
--------

I was finally able to perfect the bass track and it turned out as good as I planned! The only other addition I made was the piano, it sounded okay, but I'll do some more work on it. I think this is how the final version MIGHT sound like, but I don't know, I might make some changes to it. Now I have to work on the some of the undone parts and... *gulps* THE REST OF THE SONG? O_O

So, far I’m kind of finished with the first section of the song, but I don't know if I'll ever finish this before the end of the year. I hope Christmas break will give me plenty of time to get it done.

Until next time, g1s!
