Just a quick glance at Maxis' new game Spore!
Create a creature who will evolve and eventually take over the universe!!!
The Good;
- You can evolve your creature any way you want and if will effect how you play the game later by the choices you make in the early stages.
- Its not just creatures you can make, you have to design your city hall and other crafts.
- You will run into "game-made" creatures, but you will also run into other creatures that have been made by other online users! Sweet!
- You can custumize damn near eveything in this game.
The Bad;
- The gameplay changes as you evlove to each stage, well, so do the controls. What worked for controlling your creature in stages 1 and 2 don't work in stages 3 and 4 cause you are no longer controlling ONE creature, you are controlling a pack.
- They changed some things from the creature creater. In the creature creater, you could get your creature to a level 5 running speed by adding 5 sets of level 1 legs to your creature. In the GAME if you put 5 sets of level 1 legs on your creature, his running speed STAYS at level 1. You HAVE to unlock and use level 5 legs to get the highest speed. BOTTOM LINE, a creature with 4 legs SHOULD run faster than a creature with 2 legs, its just common knowledge!
The Ugly;
- DRM... Nuff said. What's next, EA will hire someone to kick you in the nuts everytime you boot the game?
- The graphics arn't anything outstanding, in fact there isn't a whole lot of detail at all, but it doesn't effect the gameplay
- The ugly truth, after playing the game for a couple hours, you realize you have more fun with the $10 creature creater than you did with the $50 game itself!
Overall, the game was WAY overhyped and if I had the chance to buy it again, I wouldn't. Even IF they ditched the DRM!!
well
that is true
Once you reach space in Spore, you're done.
I mean, I was absorbed, it was a very neat game. But, you know, I'd done it all before. The whole game was the creature creator, and a bunch of mini-games based around it. Was it overhyped? Yeah, that, and it was underdeveloped. I mean, Crytek made a whole bunch of tools, but they also made FarCry, and Crysis, which put the Cry Engine 1 and 2 to the test. Showed off what they had, and implemented it all and well in a fun playable form.
Spore didn't do that. And just like why people play The Sims, and why they keep releasing junk like The Sims 2 Ikea Stuff pack, is because, people don't care about the game, just the customization behind it. Thats the wonder, and it comes up pretty damn short. Sadly.
I got bored of Spore before
I got bored of Spore before it even came out. I first watched a 30 minute demo of it back in 2005 and looked forward to it. After watching several videos of it, I lost interest and ended up not getting the game.

I have to agree
Spore was OK at best. I have to commend their marketing campaign though. The stage I thought was the best was cell stage, the parts you add give you new abilities like poison or electic shock. Spike and mouth placement actually matters. I wish they kept it similar like that for the creature stage. One of the more annoying stages for me was the space stage with its stupid missions. OH, kill five animals on this planet to save it, I'm on the other side of the universe you retards.
