ok straight to the point.
why the hell are people complaining about the 3 install limit for one. how many times to you have to install a game? why WOULD you uninstall spore. both Mass Effect(pc) and spore have it. i personally on THIS computer have installed ME 5 times. i'm being dead serious! the install limit only comes into effect if you change the HARDWARE of your machine. besides most games in the past have had it in some form, such as knights of the old republic. do some research.
i'm also bored because of all the people on forums saying 'DRM stops me buying'
WHY??
IT DOES NOTHING. so i got ME and Spore and love them. and these are only the most prominant examples. i bet most of my games on PC have it in some form.
you install and play. while its installing it sees what hardware you have. SIMPLE. if you are a person that changes hardware alot you can call EA and they give you more.
so all them crybabys out there just do some goddamn research before you start bitching. all in all what im trying to say is:
DONT BE A BITCH and complain over NOTHING.
now im of the play spore and bomb that stupid empire!
You ask how many times we're
You ask how many times we're gonna install a game and then tell us you've installed Mass Effect 5 times!??
LOLLAZERZOUTMYASS!!!!!!

Dude...
When I spend a large chunk of change for a game and get told that there is a limit as to how many times it can be installed... that's bs. Have you ever not had a company fry? Is this your first computer? I'm personally on pc number.... 8...9? Of course that is counting everything my father and I owned since 286 or so.
I have had 3 computers in the last 8 years. So if the game had been released at 8 years prior then the game installed on my current computer would be the last time, assuming of course that nothing bad happened to the prior 3 or I never changed hard drives (which I did).
I understand their desire to stop piracy but DRM punishes those who actually buy the game properly. There is a reason for why we complain sir.

How amusing... is that all you can muster?

hehe you called me
hehe you called me sir...
anyway i do understand you but i just don't see it as a problem.
and the ME install stuf was because of the bugs the game has got
You're assuming, of course,
You're assuming, of course, that the install goes to plan and the activation process works perfectly. For many people it doesn't. For Bioshock, the activation limit had to be increased because of the problems people were having My friend couldn't get a legit copy of Bioshock working without a crack.
Also, some people don't like games sitting on their hard drives doing nothing and taking up space, which necessitates uninstalling and re-installing. I was under the impression that uninstalling it would give you back an activation, but I guess that system would end up being cracked and/or horribly abused.
I'm hoping they've bettered the system for consequent releases, but it's put a lot of people off any game bearing it.
the main problem is
the main problem is basically that we're BUYING this game, and should really be able to use it as many times as we want to use it since it belongs to us, and the fact that we can only have three installs, even though we CAN call them and ask for permission to install it again, it feels like we're borrowing the game from the makers, having to make sure they're okay with installing it that many times. Okay I'm not THAT angry about it, I mean its not unthinkable, only unnecessary.
This video....
This video is a good example of how DRM screws over the consumer of the product.

Installing games more than 3 times is rather frequent
I probably installed Diablo 2 and its expansion pack 30 times by now. Heck, just 2 months back I installed it on 7 computers at once for a LAN party with some friends.
Not just Diablo 2... I've installed Diablo, Heroes of might and magic 3, Worms Armageddon, Red Alert, Unreal Tournament, Starcraft and a bunch of other games countless times.
3 install limit is really stupid. I paid for the game, why shouldn't I be able to install it as much as I want?
Now I can't install it at friends's houses because of the limit(i used to do that with games to show it to them), if I reformat my PC that would use another install, people who have multiple computers they might want to play it on are screwed, and I can't change computer because that would be another install(though I have a new badass computer that should last a long time).
Fact of the matter is, if you change computers or upgrade certain parts you'll have to use another install. Some people reformat their PC every few months, those guys will be wasting their installs relatively fast. COMPUTERS BREAK(a lot), that's more installs that might have to be done if the hard drive fails or something.
Also, for Spore, if you uninstall it then reinstall it, it counts towards your install limit. I haven't experienced it myself (only installed Spore once for now), but I'm guessing there's a limit to how many extra installs EA will be giving per person.
Face it, giving install limits is a bitch and shouldn't be done. It's just going to incite more people to pirate the game.
Funny that you should
Funny that you should mention D2, as I've installed it probably a dozen or more times myself. The reasons usually change: I got tired of it and uninstalled it, only to have my interest rekindled at some point; I formatted my hard drive; I got a new hard drive; I got a new computer; etc.
If the DRM keys on hardware changes, let's just say I buy a game, install it, and start playing, only to realize that my graphics card isn't up to snuff. I go out and buy a new one. Well, that's one hardware change right there. Then, let's say that even with this new graphics card, I don't have enough memory for the game to run as efficiently as possible, so I go buy some more of that. Well, that's now 2 hardware changes after the initial install, thus (I guess) capping my at my 3 install/hardware change limit.
Well, now I'm just screwed: this game I paid full price for at the local store is just one hardware change or boredom-induced uninstall away from becoming a 60 dollar frisbee.
The probelm with DRM is
The probelm with DRM is controlling things for the sake of controlling thngs. Limiting access in anything is a load of crap. I mean, the world must have at least 15 different types of video.
Seriously, can we all just be trusted for once to have a game, install and uninstall it on a computer without treating it like a silver bullet?
grey area
their point is that they are licensing it to you, much like windows claims, they aren't selling you the game if they did you would be the one getting the money from it, but they are selling you a license to use it. they aren't selling it to you to install for others to play(sorry the diablo 2 lan party would have been defined as piracy since not everyone owned a copy. that said, i still don't agree with it, i have a desktop and a laptop that i like installing everything on so i can go back and forth and keep going back and forth(when i can transfer save files), but it's their way of preventing piracy sure, but there has to be better ways, like oh i don't know say... lowering prices. how many games within one to two months are already on sale? sure the bigger titles aren't but that's a limited percentage. as for the installs of this on pc, i don't know for sure what their hardware test is, but again it's like windows it polls multiple pieces of hardware and keeps track of them so one change here or there may not cause it to use an install. though a major overhaul or key component(the lan card has multiple votes in windows) could cause you to lose one.
I've actually made three or
I've actually made three or four hardware changes in the last month... First it was me getting my new computer, but then we replaced the RAM, got a better set of video cards (Geforce 7900 -> 9800) and upgraded my processor from dual-core to quad-core (Q6600 from Intel)
So that'd actually be enough to make me have to buy Spore again. And don't say I'm spoiled; I bought all the hardware myself. :P
Honestly, DRM wouldn't keep me from buying, but then again, I also can't see it keeping anybody from pirating either. :P
--------------------
I make music. Here.
Here's the deal
When I buy a game I suspect it to be my own business how many times I want to install it as a lot of stuff can happen including the shortage of space on the hard drive or computer/hard drive being destroyed (unintentionally). The only thing companies that made the game should be concerned about is making sure that nobody copies their copyrighted material and try to make it harder to pirate. Can you tell me which of those two things the install limiter helps? It doesn't help in protecting the copyright in any way, shape or form. And exactly how does it help to stop piracy? In fact I suspect it will actually increase it because people who went over the three install limit don't want to buy the same game again. And it's not so easy to just ask EA to allow you to install the game again (especially when you don't live in USA) mostly because when that happens EA may already not give the crap about Spore because it would several years after the game's release or it may just be complicated to prove that you've bought the game. Another reason why people are pissed off about this is because it simply feels restricting. It's like you don't get everything you paid for but rather a small portion of it. What if I want to install Spore lets say 15 years from now? Will EA really give the crap about it?
Dude, When I buy a game I
Dude, When I buy a game I would like to be able to install it 10 years from now. I recently just played Farcry again to prep for FC2 and I must have installed that fucker like 20 times now. I might even do it again when FC3 comes out. It's unacceptable to limit the installs.
Yes, but remember that EA is
Yes, but remember that EA is the one who put adware in Battlefield 2142 -.-
They get away with a lot of stuff, and yeah, it's indeed bullshit.
drm is bullshit it doesnt
drm is bullshit
it doesnt work
What is the whole point of drm? because it doesnt stop me or anyone else copying or pirating the game..
I dont mind drm actually, because games are shit now compared to 10 years ago, i dont want to play these games in 10 years time like i do with old games because there is no substance... all these 10/10 titles last about a week in the spotlight and everyone is finished and sells it back to the store
Is this one of those troll
Is this one of those troll blogs?
So you LIKE restricted dumbed down games?
So you like restricted dumbed down games then? You must be smoking something...
DRM sucks and is killing PC games.
Versatility is afreaking
Versatility is afreaking problem hre, the game is not versatile...
It's true that we might just installed 1 time and all but from some people (,like me) sometimes i have to erase my hard drive for maintanance porpuses since i am a 3D designer. Anyway no matter how many times you installed, it shoulkd istall and thats all, having a limit of installs is jusft BS. if a friend of yours wants to trey the game in another pc you can't lend it to him/her because "sorry im leaving my next 2 installs has a backup...", what if a virus destroys your hard drive? what if your brother or someone else uninstalls it for installing something else?, what if the data in it gets corrupted and you have to re-installed... oh right i have just used my 3 installs now i have to buy the game, AGAIN! ¬¬
thats my point of view, so hope the company sytarts thinking about versatility insted of Stupidity...
p.s: and YES we are BITCHING about it becasue we don't want to buy 2, 3 4 times the same game becasue it doesn't work... i rahter save my money.

???
I don't even know what DRM is, but it still sounds like it sucks.
Limited installations, space issues on consoles, isn't anyone else thinking we should have just sticked with memory cards? They were easy!
Also... what does DRM stand for? (I'd never heard of it before I read this blog)
DRM
DRM = Digital Rights Management. It's supposed to prevent piracy, but all it really does is just anger customers and provoke them into piracy, just so they can play their games. Limiting the amount of times you can install something you purchased legally isn't a great idea. Which is why lots of people looked for "cracked" versions, so they can have the freedom they want with their purchase.
(shocked face)
What? I thought DRM was an abbreviation for a game that, for some reason, only let you install it 3 times! Now I find out it's a new feature to a whole RANGE of games, and it affects all of them?
That sucks!!!
I never have to worry about
I never have to worry about DRM with my consoles. :D
For me, its not a big deal, but...
For someone who is a hardcore PC gamer this could result in numerous calls to EA to renew licenses.
Me, I'll probably never use up all three installs because I doubt I'll have three computers in the time it takes me to play through Spore to the point where I find myself bored with the game. I'll install it once on this computer, probably install it on its replacement when this one dies, then maybe on the replacement's replacement but by then I'll probably be playing Spore III on my Xbox OMGWTFBBQ1337.
So, yeah. DRM makes no difference to me but there are those who will be adversely affected and I do feel bad for them because they legally bought the game, are financially supporting EA, yet are being punished for it.
DRM is strangling the
DRM is strangling the industry. It's not a valid piracy control, either.
Bring back the code wheel! or the manual lookup! At least those were halfway fun.
lolazor!
As James Rolfe says,
WHAT THE HELL WERE THEY THINKING!?
The funny part about all this is that the cracked version have been dowload god nows how many times with no problens at all. This just shows that these fancy pants "protections" only screw up the people that actually buy the game and not the ones that download it.
I like playing games and I
I like playing games and I like playing them from an original CD. First time I encountered this DRM thing was when I changed my video board and I had to reinstall my game and find out that I had only one more installation. I called the manufacturer asking why this is happening and they explained every thing to me. Now I think it's quite a good way to protect their work.
_____
Damn computer power cords, always in the way, always making me trip.
LoL
Well, imagine me buying HP printers and the driver software would work only 3 times... That is a complete rip off!!! Once you pay for a game, you should be able to install it as many times as you want... I paid the money so...
