SICK and TIRED of FPS'

Right now I am majorly pissed off with First person shooters. First of all, it is so painfully obvious when it comes to reviewers not reviewing their shit objectively. I still have no clue what the hype was about for Halo 3, it was the exact same game as the previous, there was NO innovation from its succesors as far as I could tell, and I cannot think of a single major feature or innovation that hasn't already been in Wolfenstein 3D.

Bullet time effect, yeah... great. We all know how many games have tried to rip the matrix effect into their games since max payne. Lastly being able to control a team... this is all I can think of which has been new ever since the dawn of shooters.

Don't get me wrong, I like the odd shooter here and there, I definetely love 3rd person shooters, because more often or not they are the ones which offer more than just shooting, ie. hand to hand combat, platformer, etc. But ever since my first shooting game (Medal of honor frontlines) its the same shit recycled over and over again.

Right now my typical shooter-dumb type of player bought Rainbow six Vegas 2 and Dark sector instead of Bourne conspiracy, freagin' great I tell ya.

HOW do people not get bored playing the same shit over and over again? like seriously? How does somebody manage to play more than one war game without getting bored?!

Umm, CoD 4 is a great game.

Umm, CoD 4 is a great game. I love playing new people and learning new strats and spots. Sure it gets old that's when I bust out a RPG, but I always seem to go back to CoD 4. Play different modes, if you play a lot of TDM go play some S&D. It'll never get stale. ;)

I agree

while FPS's aren't my favorite genre, I do like a few. Battlefield: Bad Company is a really good game. And Call of Duty 4 is in my opinion THE game to own last year. Halo 3? Yes, overrated in my opinion, but it is just my opinion. People love it, people hate it, I thought it was just meh.

But hey, if they're good games, and they keep making non-fps's as well, who cares? More good games to play!

what about fallout 3 and

what about fallout 3 and (well technically they are not a fps )but the metroid prime series

No,

the Metroid Primes are FPS'. The only criteria is a shooting and a first person perspective, both of which it meets.

I'm 50/50 with you

While I do agree with you on some points. Most army shooters feel the same, especially how like 75% of army shooters are in WWII(made up number but it makes sense) and I get it. Hitler bad, shooting nazi's good, you can only kill so many Nazis till you get sick of it.

Not all FPS give you the same crap though

Metroid Prime series feels almost the same as the 2-D games except it's in the 1st person view. you still get your monsters, and your bigger than life boss fights, unlike Halo, with little to no boss fights.

Team Fortress 2 is also another good shooter. you have 9 completely different classes trying to defeat each other, with a Pixar art-style
(the characters look like they belong in the incredibles) and not all classes are set out to kill. The Spy works more for getting the enemy intelligence(capture the flag) and the Medic heals and buff's your team. Definately your standard shooter.

but I'm no shooter expert. I'm sure there are more games that stand out from the standard army shooter.

I HATE FPS

I f***ing HATE FPS! The controls are just too uncomfortable. Platformers are clearly the best genre

im with you man

ill take mario, spyro, old sonic, pyschonauts or crash over halo anyday.

Halo

True Halo 3 made no real innovation, but Halo:Combat Evolved made console FPSs what they are today

Well then Halo should be

Well then Halo should be damned to hell.
Look what it has done.

what are you talking about

you just seem to think that the only game genre ever is fps if you looked around you'd see that there is a rich gold mine of other games that are not fps

I get very tired of FPS

I get very tired of FPS games very very quickly... except for two.

I never tired of Half-Life 2, because I was totally immersed in the world, hooked by the story, wowed by the physics, and entertained by the weapons and monsters. That game had it all for me.

The other isn't hard to predict: Counter-Strike. Total, I think I've put in maybe - honestly - 2,000 hours total, maybe more. That game did everything right for an online FPS. At one point I was very good at it - practice makes perfect - and used to play at LanFusion.com.

Those "two" games (really two halves to one game, I suppose) redeemed the entire First Person Shooter genre for me.

I also enjoyed Halo 2 with my friends... but not the game itself, which I found unresponsive and irritating; just hanging out with my friends, it became a social experience. Drink a few brews, play some Halo... equaled many a good time.

I spend most of my time these days with classic PC adventure games or with my Wii, so I haven't given COD4 a try; but after my Half-Life experience, I'm not willing to completely write off the FPS experience.

Half Life 2

That was the first PC game I ever bothered to finish. I usually can't stand playing in front of my computer but wow. That game owned. Remember when you first got the gravity gun and went to that creepy town and it felt like you were in a zombie movie it was so awesome with the buzzsaws and everything. Anyways if you don't like FPS don't play them. Also Fallout 3 is not really going to be a FPS.

You know how some people are chocoholics, well I'm an alcoholic!

I admit it

Half life 2 I did enjoy, but that game is ONE of the best FPS there is, and has an immense story to go with it, But I could play the best game of any genre and like it to say the least.

i completely agree

i agree, the fps series is getting old, and fast, i want to see something else adn something original occasionally

Really?

Not a thing has changed since Wolf 3d? Really? Hmm, remind me again how you actually aimed in Wolfenstien 3d? Oh, that's right, you didn't.

Just about every video game is the same thing recycled over and over again, different story, characters, you name it.

Good Point

But I think FPS has taken it into an absurd level now, the perfect example would be the war games on PS2/Xbox/Gamecube generation consoles, which is a few years now but once the library for the new generation opened up I bet I can pick out more examples.

I can name innovations in other genre's... such as interactive movie type of games which blew up with Fahrenheit/Indigo child, thats an innovation to me in Adventure gaming. Another example in rhythm games is AudioSurf, haven't seen anything like it. Or Body Harvest, the first sandbox style game (contrary to popular belief, it wasn't GTA)

And in FPS there just hasn't been anything lately that I could point my finger on and say "WOW, I haven't seen that done before" and I'm not talking about a feature but really an innovation.

Well,

you can't just say there is NO innovation in the genre. Metroid Prime was extremely innovative fps-wise. And don't forget about our good friend BioShock. Every genre has it's good points. Some you just have to look harder than others.

LOL

shooters are what you get and deserve for owning an Xbag.

I own a 360, and can say

I own a 360, and can say proudly that I don't own a single FPS. But on the subject of FPS in general, I don't like them on consoles. Like someone said before, the controls just aren't that great, but I like playing them very much on a PC.

gears of war

is an amazing game as well. Yes there are a lot of first person shooters and a lot of them suck, but that is the same for all genres.

Um...

gears isnt an fps. It's a third person shooter. Still a good game though.
