Thank you for joining me on my last installment of 360, PS3, Wii: Thoughts on Today's Consoles. I've already expressed my opinion and feelings on the 360, PS3, and Wii. So on today's episode, I'll discuss what gaming is for me to today, how the industry effects me as a gamer since the NES, and my future in gaming. I'll give you a hint, it doesn't look bright. All of that and more, today...on Thoughts.

In case you missed the first 3 parts of this series, here are all the links. Get caught up:

With all the current-gen consoles aiming at separate markets, (Wii has casual, 360 has everyone ((now with their casual projects)), and PS3 with the foolish) it may be a bit easier to stick to one console. So when I got my PS3, I knew I was making a commitment. While no one was forcing me to stick to one console, the $500 REALLY needed a reason to be justified. While the PS3 is VERY slowly doing that, it's having an effect on me that I couldn't of planned on.
Most people who don't play video games view gamers as either nerds, losers, people who need to grow up, or a waste of money. They'll justify their nerdiness (such as being obsessed with cars or sports) because it is more socially acceptable. They'll call a gamer a loser because he sits inside and, once again, doesn't do something socially acceptable like playing sports. They'll say we need to grow up, when for men (using the car example again) have just stopped playing with toy cars and upgraded to real cars, or girls stop playing with Barbies and now try making themselves into one. Us gamers are the kids who played with action figures, and used our imagination as entertainment. We grew up, and our toys advanced, to video games. Their final insult is usually that we're wasting our money. Like that $600 iPhone, $300 iPod, $35 Blu-Ray movie, $9 movie ticket each weekend, or countless dollars spent on cloths you'll only wear once aren't a waste of money. Although...I'm beginning to see where they're coming from on that last part.
Gaming today has become (for most) a financial nightmare. Game prices are at an all time high (that is from the last two generations), and the consoles aren't cheap either. While the Wii is the cheapest, at $250, last generation the Dreamcast was $199. Not to mention the Gamecube, which is basically what the Wii REALLY is, was also at $199. So Nintendo increased their price by $50, right? Well by the end of the Gamecube's life, it was at an amazing $99 for quite awhile. So many felt like the Wii was $150 more than their Gamecube, since most people didn't get a Gamecube until the $99 price tag. At release, the XBox and the PS2 were both $299. So the 360, at release, was $399! People were in shock for awhile, but quickly dished out the cash. The gaming worlds biggest shock, and probably the main reason for the PS3's struggling existence, was when the PS3 was unveiled for an astounding $599! So the XBox increases by $100, and the Playstation increases by $300?!
Sony did have something that made it, almost, seem worth it. Their history. The Playstation and Playstation 2 stand as many gamers favorite consoles of all time, so we all expected great things from the Playstation 3. While we've received a few cool games, or features, here and there...they haven't done anything yet to justify the price tag.
Sorry for rambling, but here's my point...gaming for me today is a lot of money for little pay off. Even if you're a 360 owner, $300 is not something to laugh at, so you expect a lot of good stuff from your console. For the most part, 360 owners get what they want, except for one thing. The most expensive piece of their hobby breaks! It almost feels like PS3 owners had to spend another $200 or $100 more just to own a console that may not have as many great things for it, but at least is reliable. Meanwhile, satisfied Wii owners (not all, but the satisfied ones) are laughing at us because they all saved more money than any of us. Not to mention, their games are at the widely accepted price of $50, while PS3 and 360 owners are dishing out an extra $10 a game. Not to mention, you'll see tons of LIMITED or COLLECTOR'S edition versions of games on the 360 and PS3 ranging from $70 to over $100. Controllers also match the same price as games. The PS3 and 360 controllers will easily cost you $60, while a Wiimote goes for $50. You've also got to pay for your online service on the 360 (not Silver accounts, but who honestly wants those nowadays). When you add it all up, none of the systems really feel justified.
Sure you could go the cheap route and get a Wii with $50 games and controllers, but good luck finding games worth owning. While it's cheap, hardly any games exist that you'll even care to buy.
You could take the middle route and buy a 360 with it's $60 games and controllers. Although have fun replacing your console when the damn thing breaks. At least the 360's biggest downfall won't really effect you financially.
And then you could go the extra expensive route with the PS3 and spend $400 to $500 on your console and buy $60 games and controllers. While you do get a reliable console, there isn't really anything that justifies your HUGE purchase.
Now I've been playing games since the days of the Nintendo Entertainment System, more widely known as the NES or Nintendo. Games back then were bright and colorful, and provided entertainment fixes. If you were bored, chances are the blocky gray box could fix that problem. Since the jump to 3D, games have become a lot more than what they once were. It's no longer a case of, buy a game, go home and play, rinse, repeat, finally get bored, buy another game. Nowadays, with all the choices of genres and consoles, we've got to be positive before a purchase. Many of us (including myself) will usually wait until after the release of the game in question, and read reviews. While you may love the Sci-Fi genre, and First person shooters, was Haze good? No, it wasn't. While graphic whores minds were blown by Assassin's Creed, and the idea of free-roaming, did they get what they were expecting? No, they didn't. You can no longer buy a game at random, play until boredom, and get another game. You've got to be absolutely sure on your purchase, which kind of reflects back on my financial issue with gaming.
I'm no longer confident in a, look at the cover and read the back of the case, type of purchase. The last time I did that I was screwed over with a crappy game (PoPoLoCrois for the PSP). Nowadays I've got to read reviews, watch video footage, demo the game, before a purchase. It's almost become a hassle just to find a form of entertainment. Back in the day it was kind of hard to make a bad game, but nowadays it is entirely too easy. Survival horror is my favorite genre, but usually it's only Resident Evil and Silent Hill providing the games worth playing. I'll try a random game once in awhile like, Obscure or Cold Fear, but be completely disappointed. Back in the golden age, you could usually buy a platformer and be pretty satisfied (while Bubsy was bad, it was at least entertaining). With problems like crappy controls, or glitches, you just can't trust a single genre of gaming for entertainment.
With prices going up, and games not being what they used to be, the future of gaming for me looks bleak. I've stated more than once to my older brother ,"I think the PS3 will be the last console I'll ever own." Not because the console is amazing and great...far from it. It's like I said before, gaming has become extremely expensive with little pay off. While I still plan on getting a Wii someday, (because, quite honestly, I have GOT to play No More Heroes) there doesn't seem to be any purpose to move forward. Games aren't providing the same kind of experience they were 2 generations ago, or even last generation. They're something different now, and I don't know if it's something I'm really enjoying enough to keep moving forward. While I love the world and industry of gaming to death, the games and consoles are all unjustified purchases in my opinion. You want to know the REAL reason I own a PS3? Here it is:
- I couldn't miss out on Resident Evil 5, I choose the PS3 over the 360 because I knew it wouldn't break before I got to play this game.
- I didn't want to get SO far behind like I did last generation buy purchasing the console and then having to play catch up. What I mean is, having to buy and play all of the games I missed out on by holding off for too long.
- From the outside looking in (basically seeing my friend's consoles and not owning one personally) the games looked great. Too bad once I really caught up with this generation, and bought a console, I realized there wasn't much here.
I hope the statement that I've made to my brother won't come true, I really do hope the consoles get better. Not only that, I hope the next generation of consoles are bad ass pieces of hardware and something worth going after. As of right now, I really don't know what to say. While I'm not going to sell my PS3, because I do have a small glimmer of hope for the industry, it's really sad what the gaming world has become. I'll end this blog with these few words.
Hello, my name is Big D and I am Playstation 3 owner. The games I play most on my PS3? Playstation One games.
The entire THE 360 BREAKS
The entire THE 360 BREAKS line was old a few months ago. Why don't you come up with something better to grasp on to for your anti MS crap?
Whoa!
Settle down tiger, this dude seems completely unbiased.
You sir, are wrong...
anti Microsoft crap?
That makes no sense. I've complemented and insulted all three consoles from all three companies. I'm unbiased. If you're going to make a habit of posting insultive comments on my blogs, please just find something better to do. I once respected your opinion, but seriously you're becoming the hemroid on the ass of the world.
To my fellow g1s, I know I sound like an immature prick for responding in this fashion, but this isn't the first time this guy has made comments like this. For more, check out this blog:

"Well that pretty much sums
"Well that pretty much sums up my opinion on the 360. It has no exclusives worth buying the console over, the online serves no purpose especially because I have to pay, and the console itself is unreliable. So to sum up my entire opinion,...I don't like it. I don't.
Also, if you've got anything to say, ANYTHING! Disagreements, insights, Agreements, anything at all. Feel free to comment, rate, digg, whatever. I love to see what you guys think, so come on. Speak up. Thanks for reading guys, and I'll see you again"
The first paragraph speaks for itself. The second.. Well if you don't want comments kissing up to you for or opinions, then don';t ask for any and all comments.
Maybe I should clarify...
KingRanger...you are part of a community that respects one another. I have no problem with your opinion or insight, it's the way you say them. If you want to make a comment on my blog, it's fine. I'll even responde. But the way you post is just disrespectful. Follow this rule, if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.
I get people commenting my blogs all the time that disagree with me, or say I'm wrong. They aren't dicks about it as you are.
I guess next time I post something like that I'll clarify and ask for no ass hole comments. Maybe then you'll actually make a comment where constructional criticism exist, or you actually explain your opinion. Rather than just bashing someone who disagrees with you.
Seriously, if you can't STAND someone elses opinion, and it makes you that frustrated that you have to insult them. Why are you reading blogs? Or better yet, why are you part of a community such as ScrewAttack which is EXTREMELY expressive. You're bound to find people on here who disagree with you. So rather than insulting them for disagreeing with you, let it go. I'm sure if I read any blogs you made...which I plan on doing, VERY SOON, I wouldn't agree with some of the things you say. Just because I disagree doesn't mean I'm going to insult you. I'm better than that. I don't have to use words as those to get my point across, and I damn sure don't enjoy talking down to people.
That's all I've got to say, hopefully you'll take this to heart and stop with your insulting comments. They aren't provoked, they aren't necessary, and they damn sure aren't needed. Thanks for your time.

When you do blogs about the
When you do blogs about the current gens systems reviewing them basically, but you only one one out of the three, you are not accomplishing anything. The way you say things like "I knew it would break" accompanied by your original statements that you don't even own a 360...
Well in my eyes, and other peoples eyes, you just seem to be against those other system. I don't know if you are or not, but I have never played Halo 3. I will not speak about Halo 3, nor will I "review" it or discuss it on a blog. Why won't I? Because I have never had it. I have seen others play it, but I have never owned it myself. You do not own a 360 or a wii by your own admission. yet you spend a lot of blog time talking about their pluses and minuses.
I give you that I have been a dick about some of the things you have said, but when you say you don't have a certain system, and then you rag on it with stuff like "I know they break" you just come off as a fanboy for the PS3 IMO.
Alrighty...
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! For being calm, and explaining yourself. Seriously, this is the kind of critism that is acceptable. Now time to responde...
I don't have to own a 360 to know the ins-and-outs about it. My older brother and father (who both live with me) both own one. I can play theirs whenever I want. Not to mention, my former best friend owns a 360 as well.
My History with the 360:
I got mono and was sick for 2 weeks, and basically stuck in bed. My former best friend let me borrow his 360 and 6 games for that entire 2 week period. All I did was play the thing. I really only stook to 2 games, Dead Rising and SMACKDOWN! vs RAW 2007. The other games bored me.
When my father got his 360 and HDTV as a Christmas gift from my older brother last year, he kept them both in my room. For 2 to 3 months they were in there, and I was able to try an even bigger variety of games. Still...all I played was Dead Rising and SMACKDOWN! vs RAW 2008.
Before, in between, and after all of those time periods I would go to my former best friends house (probably 5 to 6 times a week...he lives 1 house down from me) and play games with him. It was mostly SD!vR07 or 08 since there wasn't anything else on the console that interested me. We would take turns playing online matchs to try and increase his online stats. He had a gamefly account so he was constantly renting games to play, so I've played A TON of 360 games, and none of them really interested me.
My older brother and father let me play their 360s whenever I want, but I have no desire to do so. I've completed Dead Rising, and SD!vR09 isn't out yet. When it is out, I'll just pick it up on the PS3, since I now own one.
My History with the Wii:
My former best friend let me borrow his Wii for about a month when he went out of the country to Mexico for Christmas. Along with that he let me borrow several games. All I really played was Wario Ware and Wii Sports.
One of my good friends owns a Wii and comes over at least once a month for an entire weekend. During that time I can play with the Wii and try out all of his games (he's constantly getting new games).
Whenever I'm not with friends, at home, or working, I'm at my girlfriend's house. She owns a Wii as well. We've played tons of games on it, and still my feelings remain the same.
My older brother plans on getting a Wii a.s.a.p., and so do I. I believe I have had MORE than enough exposure to have developed my own opinion on the console.
My Opinion on the PS3:
If you had read my 360, PS3, Wii: Thoughts on Today's Console Pt. 2 blog, it speaks on my feelings for the console. How can I be a PS3 fanboy when I don't even like the console?
To end this long comment, I see where you're coming from. If that's your code to follow (not reviewing or really speaking an opinion on anything until you own it) than that's fine. But I believe if I've had prolonged exposure to the game, console, or whatever the item is in question, than I can state my opinion on it. If you don't agree with that, I'm sorry. Maybe my blogs aren't for you. I appreciate your input though, and for calming down just a tad bit. It makes a huge difference. Thanks for reading!

I'm a 360 owner, and i have
I'm a 360 owner, and i have to say it does still happen. I really don't mind because Microsoft stands behind their product when it does happen, and they will make sure ti gets repaired at no cost to me. And it didn't take a class-action lawsuit to do it? (Anyone remember getting Disc Read Errors?)
Denying the Red Rings shoot out of nowhere is silly. Get over it.
The games I play most on my PS3
Are PS2 games. I mean, I like Metal Gear Solid 4 and Soul Calibur, but I'm heavily anticipating White Knight Chronicles. I mean.. Level 5 has never let me down(unlike Square-Enix, fucking 10-2, 11, Chrono Cross, Kingdom Hearts, Advent Children, Mario Hoops 3 on 3, Final Fantasy Tactics Advnace, and many, many more!)
I usually agree with your
I usually agree with your blogs D, but the future doesn't really look bleak to me. Albeit it doesn't look like we'll ever enjoy another era as great as the nes/sega battles and ensuing snes domination, but I still have a positive view of things to come. each system has shown it can put out good games, their just far and in between unfortunately. They have served its purpose though, games like COD4 with ridiculous visuals and addictive gameplay, MGS4...don't really need to justify that one, and even brawl for a few examples.
I think it's only going to get better, were just going to have to be more patient with our extremely expensive toys :P
I envy you...
Honestly, I wish I could enjoy this generation as much as everyone else. I don't like NOT enjoying gaming as much as I used to. It bothers me, quite honestly. I wish I could be having as much fun as everyone else. I wish I loved FPS games, and online play. I really do.
I'm unfortunately cursed with a bunch of personality traits that don't lean towards those things. Ah well, someone had to get the crappy traits. Thanks for reading!
- Drew
so very negative
not a good way to look at things
Well ya'see!
I'm usually an incredibly optimistic person, but in my eyes this generation is EXTREMELY lacking in almost every department. Sorry if I depressed you, that wasn't my intentions.
- Drew
Great blog!
Great blog Drew! I agree with everything you said. I am 14 years old and I probably look like one of these fucked up kids that listen to rap and everything but I'm not. I'm a fucked up kid because I'm not like every other kid. I like old music (Elvis,Beatles,Metallica,KISS,etc...) and older video game. I grew up with the Nes and back in the day every game were used or not in their box (I never had a Nes game with its box) and everything I had to chose a game was the cover. Yeah, I knew about game like Mario but I knew nothing about Zelda, Metroid or megaman. Even when I got my N64 I had to choose at random because I didn't have Internet. Everything I own since I'm 4 or 5 years old was made by Nintendo. Nes,Snes,N64,Gamecube,GBA and finally my Wii. I do own an Atari 2600 but that's not the same thing because I never played it a lot as a child (Couldn't find any game exept the one I had).
What you said about PS3 is true, what you said about Xbox 360 is true and what you said about the Wii is also true. PS3 cost a lot of money and there's not many game. Blue Ray? Who cares?
The XBox have good games but seriously...The only reason why I would like to buy a Xbox is because it has a lot of FPS and the best online play. Guess what? I ONLY LIKE FPS ON WII AND COMPUTER! The Xbox have too many problem too. Microsoft is just doing like Windows they always cause trouble with their software so people buy more of them to replace the older one.
Wii has the worst online but guess what...It wasn't that bad and IT'S FREAKIN' FREE! I won't pay for online . There's a lot of third party game that sucks but there's a lot coming out that rock.
Great blog Drew.
Hmmm...
I appreciate your constant support, but try not to become a Big D fanboy. Hahaha.
I won't REFUSE to pay for online, but certain things are just dumb to pay for. Wallpapers and Themes for your console should NOT cost money, seriously. Does it cost money for a wallpaper on your computer? No. Gamertag photos, those shouldn't cost money either. Seriously, those things aren't worth paying for.
- Drew
Paying for themes is weak...
I agree, especially when the Playstation Network is not charging for themes...
There are a lot of free
There are a lot of free themes and gamer pics on live. The PSN charges quite a bit for other services it offers. Just like live does.
Totally Agree
Me and my friends had an identical discussion not too long ago. There are still some good games, but its much worse than the previous generations. I use my ps2 to play all my ps1 games, its cheaper.
True that...
What I meant was, I download PS1 games to my PS3. Right now I've been playing a lot of Street Fighter Alpha, Crash Bandicoot, and Syphon Filter. I play those 3 games more than any or ALL of my games combined on my PS3. It's sad really...
- Drew
While I do agree somewhat, there are ways to avoid the problems.
First of all, let me say that this was a very god and well thought out blog, and after some reflection I realized that I probably play the original Bionic Commando more often than I play my Wii. Also, I agree that crappy games now are crappier than crappy games in the past, generally speaking (I'd rather play a crappy collection of three minigames for the Wii than Superman 64 any day), but all is not lost. Yes, many of the big titles are generic samey shooters with almost nonexistent stories (Gears of War, Halo, Haze, Killzone, Dark Void (Doing the same thing sideways is not a new idea and having a jetpack in a 3D shooter was revolutionary twelve years ago when Duke Nukem 3D did it), etc.), and yes there is a ton of crap on the market, but let me tell you how to get away from these problems. First of all, with Wii games at least, it is incredibly easy to see what is crap and what isn't. Just use these easy steps:
1) Check the back of the package and if you see the words "minigames", "sports", "trivia" or "education" put it back immediately.
2) Check for the developer and publisher. If you do not know of a good game they have previously created, put it back.
3) Check the ESRB rating. If it says EC, put it back.
Congratulations, you will now find better Wii games!
Anyway, all you really need to do is have three to five review sites/magazines that you trust and check on their sites before you buy, which takes around five minutes.
Also, PC gaming is thriving, with imaginative, indie, and cheap games. Services like Steam, Gametap and Stardock Central are constantly becoming better. Games like Audiosurf (possibly the best $10 I ever spent) are becoming more common. Also, you can buy plenty of old, and not so old PC games for under $10 (for example, I got Sacred Gold for $5.00 (Gamestop), Beyond Good and Evil for $9.00 (Ebay, including $6.00 shipping) and I found out you can get every Rayman game ever released for PC for under $20.00 total(Amazon)).
Additionally, there seem to be a ton of possibly revolutionary games coming out soon. I believe that many developers are really trying to move the industry forward with games like Spore, LittleBigPlanet, Mirror's Edge and Rise of the Argonauts. Also there are many unique and imaginative games coming out that revel in their glorious absurdity, like de Blob, Madworld, and the new Bionic Commando game (at first it didn't seem interesting, but the more I hear about it, the better it sounds). Also, there are plenty of throwbacks to the good old days combined with modern technologies, and new ideas, like Dragon Age: Origins, and Wario Land: Shake It. Even some seemingly mundane titles are including amazing features, like Far Cry 2's incredible level editor.
Finally, downloadable game services are beginning to showcase imaginative games that offer incredible experiences like Braid, Pixeljunk Eden and LostWinds. Developers feel they can take chances making smaller, cheaper games, so they don't developed a clone of an FPS or racing game. They make creative masterpieces that, if released as full titles could create a renaissance in gaming.
What I'm saying is that although it has been a bit dark recently, we are entering the light at the end of the tunnel, and a revolution may be arriving. A glorious revolution of creativity and diversity. My hope is that us gamers will be ready for it, and buy the amazing unique games, and forgo the identical sequels and clones.
Hmmm...
First off, now THIS is a comment. I love these well thought out comments, thank you sir.
Alright, as far as PC gaming goes, I don't really have a decent to good PC to play such things. I do try the smaller PC titles, but buying a game for a PC would never work for me. I could attempt an upgrade, but I don't really like PC gaming. I much prefer console gaming...something about going to the computer for anything besides the internet, school work, job stuff, or buying things doesn't sit well with me. I used to have emulators and roms on my computer, many rare and AWESOME games. I just never played them because it required me sitting at my computer to play them. If I could put them on my TV, I probably would have enjoyed them.
I do agree that these smaller games do seem to be taking a step in the right direction. If they had come out 2 generations ago, they could have been sold as full-fledged games. Unfortunately they are only worth a few bucks now, but hey that's good for us.
I haven't played Braid yet, but it looks awesome! Right now I've got a demo on my PS3 of, The Last Guy. That game is pretty freakin' cool, but I don't know how long I could really play it before getting bored. The PixleJunk series are okay, but I didn't really enjoy Monsters. The demo of Eden I got is cool I guess, but so far I thought Racers was pretty damn good. I did download Flow...it's fun but I didn't realize it was controlled with the Sixaxis and that sucks.
I want a Wii for the VC and WiiWare. WiiWare seems to have a good amount of games coming on it, and the fact that Nintendo will actually make some too is awesome! I want to check out Lost Winds and see what it' all about. I'd have to say though, out of all these small projects...Mega Man 9 is the on I am most pumped for. I WILL buy that game!
- Drew
Thanks, and I have a suggestion for you.
You can actually hook up your PC to your TV instead of a monitor. Then, when you plug in a gamepad, It's just like playing a real console with your emulators. You can even use a XBox controller. Personally, I use a Thrustmaster, and I have a Wingman for when a friend is around. No, I did not make up those names. They're cheap and they work alright. They aren't as good a some more expensive gamepads, but they do the job, although it's a bit annoying that they don't have as many buttons as the N64 controllers did, so I have to make custom control setups for each game.
Yeah, I will buy Megaman 9 also, even if I'm broke at the time it comes out. I have my ways.
As for WiiWare, I can't say that it's that great. It only gets a new game once a week, and most of the time they are crap like Spogs Racing or Major League Eating. I mean, LostWinds is great, but there's no news on the next episode, and it is really short. Wild West Guns is supposed to be okay, and Gyrostarr is fun with friends for a few minutes. Strong Bad is good if you like point and click adventure games, and you'd rather play it on Wii than PC.
..
In Europe, the game prices are even worse. Many new games are 70€, which is something like 110$.
Also, the Wiimote is actually the most expensive one, because you have to also buy the Nunchuk which is 30$ so 50+30=80$.
Awesome blog.
Oh yeah...
That's true, I forgot about the Nunchuk. Although not necessary for some Wii games, it usually is for many.
I feel bad for people in Europe, that has GOT to suck. Thanks for reading!
- Drew
Wow!
80 bucks? Where I live buying both cost 60 bucks!
Some new games in england
Some new games in england are about £60 which translates to about $120-$130 american dollers.

I Club Seals! For fun!
I'm counting on things to come.
The wii has some great stuff comming up and some great games now, third party developers are pulling there weight together and actually bothering with non-gimmicky controls and decent graphics. Also I love the nintendo franchises and the virtual console so there's hope there too. I'm getting a 360 soon because I also like shooters and I need my fair share of blood bath as much as my adventures.
I often play my super nintendo because the ol' skoo' mario games are still awesome fun, same with my n64 and cube games. :)
