Hardcore Gamers???

This is just a weird change in language I noticed in the last few years. Does anyone else think it's strange that anyone who likes a game that isn't WiiSports or WiiFit is now called a 'hardcore' gamer?

I play games for a large majority of my day, but I don't play on my Wii a lot (I actually kept my Gamecube, mainly because the Wii wouldn't work with my Gameboy Player) I still wouldn't consider myself a 'hardcore' gamer though. I don't own that many consoles (NES, SNES, N64, GC, GBA, Wii, PS2) considering how many some of my friends have, and I never go to E3 or get overly excited about a game release (apart from Brawl)

Now, because WiiSports and WiiFit have introduced a new audience to games (the 'casual' gamers) suddenly, I'm hardcore. I used to be a normal gamer, but now, I'm 'hardcore'.

Do you understand the controls to a Zelda game? Yes? You're a 'hardcore' gamer.

Do you own a PS3 or 360? Yes? You're a 'hardcore' gamer.

Do you not play WiiSports or WiiFit? You're f***ing hardcore, man!!!

At first I didn't mind this, but now it's gotten to the point where people are saying it at E3. (What about the hardcore gamers, Reggie?) It's a whole new genre, based upon a few Wii games. Just because of one or two new games on a new console, the majority of the gaming industry have now turned 'hardcore' overnight.

Now this isn't bad for a few things. For example, I would consider myself a 'hardcore' fan of a few games. I have an entire section of my internet favourites dedicated to Earthbound. I would consider myself a hardcore fan of that. I regularly go on the 'Eternal Darkness' forum and I replay it a lot. I am a hardcore gamer of that.

But now, people assume that I've played every game, and I'm 'hardcore', just because I can pick up and play a Mario game without getting confused.

(Shakes fist at the sky) Curse you, casual gamers, and the problems you brought to the regular gamers!

I Want to Make A Word...

People such as you and myself who feel this way should be considered "Casul-Core." I just likes the way it sounds.

*Pines away hoping to start an Internet Phenomena*

You sir, are a genius

Casual-core is the funnest thing I've had to say since I found out about Shaq-Fu (Terrible game, fun to say)
(Adds Casual-core to his dictionary)

It's a shame...

Before the Wii, one might've considered a game like Animal Crossing to be a casual game. But now it's the star of Nintendo's E3 conference. :/
