(Deep breath)

MORTALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL KOMBATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!

That was the battle cry in North America on 9/13/1993, for on that day Mortal Kombat headed to the SNES and Genesis. We people put their carts into their systems though, they found a Mortal Kombat without blood! Genesis owners quickly breathed a sigh of relief when they found a code that restored the blood. SNES owner however, were out of luck as NOA's censorship prohibited any code to allow blood and also tamed the fatalities of Sub Zero, Raiden, and others.

The plot of Mortal Kombat? Long story short, there's a shaolin tournament between members of the Outworld and the Earth Realm. The Outworld has been victorious the last 9 times and another victory will result in armageddon for Earth...but enough of the story, let's get to the fighting!

These are the 7 Kombatants:
Top row (L to R): Johnny Cage, Kano, Sub Zero and Sonya,
Bottom row (L to R): Raiden, Liu Kang, and Scorpion

You will steer one of these fighters to victory over Goro and Shang Tsung and restore piece to the world.

I chose Sub-Zero. With this fighter (and the easy difficulty setting because I'm horrible at fighting games) I will cruise to an easy path of glory!

Now the graphics for it's time aren't too bad for a SNES arcade port. The motion capture images stunned gamers when they first saw this in the arcades and the SNES version is not bad for 16 bits. The control however is another story. They're not very repsonsive, especially when you have to duck and playing this game with a d-pad is just not the same as a 360 degree joystick. Now, back to my fight:

Hey! Not bad. I took care of Cage and I'm going to face my next opponent. This shouldn't blow up in my face right?

Wrong. Just as I expected, a quick exit. At least I don't have to put any quarters to continue though.

All in all, the SNES port of the game is not the greatest and if you have a SNES and a Genesis hooked up, I strongly recommend the Genesis version. It's still a nice nostalgic trip though to play this and see the franchise before it went down the drain so if you can get this cheap for the SNES, buy it.
