g1 Featured Blog- The NES 2

This is the first time we've featured a blog for a g1 Submission but we plan on doing this a lot more. For his blog getting featured g1 McFrosticles scores a sweet 125 g1 Points- very nice!

The Gaming Historian takes you back to 1993 with the NES 2 (also known as the Top Loader). What was this system and what happened to it? The Historian has the answer.

Please rate and enjoy! =)

Update: Wow, I wake up and log on, and I see my post on the front page! thanks so much for all of the comments, emails, subscribers, etc. I'm just glad my work is finally getting out to more people.

If you like this episode, please check out my other video in my blog about the History of Donkey Kong. I've also got a new episode that will be up later this week. Thanks!

Thanks for posting this!

Most people don't know about it and it's one of my top 5 favorite consoles along with the redesigns for PSOne and PS2. Great research!

I need to find me one of

I need to find me one of these babies!

very informative

I remember the old "evolve or become exstinct ads" and thought to myself why would I evolve from an NES to NES2 when the SNES is already out there.

+50 points

I always wonderd when it

I always wonderd when it came out but thanks to yhou I know now

do they sel these things in europe???

Looks kinda wierd

Looks kinda wierd and when i first saw it on some avgn I was like wtf is that?!?!

Awesome

I love my original NES and I wound never cast it aside, but I use this system a lot more often for it’s obvious convenience. Plus, there’s something about top loaders I really like. It might sound dumb but I think it’s the fact that you can see the cartridge art while you play.

I only saw this through

I only saw this through AVGN!

I really like your style, I'm looking forward to your next video!

Honestly, I think this would

Honestly, I think this would make a great screwattack show. Nothing like schooling the younger folks about the old ways, and showing some of us older folk who never had it, about it! ;D God knows I never heard of the top loader til i saw the Nerd use it lol

-8-bit since '86

Thank you everyone!

I'm glad everyone likes the show. I have a second episode about Donkey Kong which you can also find in my blog, and episode three will be out this week.

I'm not sure how this became a Top g1 post, but I think it might have something to do with Fox. All I can say is, Thank You =).

Agreed

I was thinking the exact same thing. This would definitely make a good ScrewAttack show.

Good Stuff

I used to think this was a third-party NES alternative! You learn something new every day!

Nice feature.

I enjoyed this video. You seem to really know what you're doing. A bit more professional than lots of submissions. I hope to see more of your work in the future.

no kidding

You made a legit video. I would really like to see more of you stuff.

This was very giving. Now I

This was very giving. Now I know something I did not know before, and that makes a good video.

I need to get me one of those

I need to get me one of those, my old NES is broken because the connectors corroded so I cant play anymore :(

it's awesome! sent you an

it's awesome!
sent you an email^^

damn i thought it was

damn i thought it was bootleg too when I saw it in some of the NERDS videos ;]

NES

I love this console, for it's just a straight plug and play versus the purchase of a new 12pin connector. Or spring for the original nes. good post!!!!!

I need one of those!

Nice and informative video!

And do you guys know if the (nes2) was released in europe (sweden) ? I would like to get one of those beauties!

Please send me and mail if you know where to get a cheap pal ver of the nes2!

NES 2

Awesome video. My granduncle had one and I was always amazed by it when I was a kid. I wonder if he still has it and wouldn't mind passing it along to me :D

SNES 2

There was a SNES toploader that had the wobble issiue and was about the same size... but it was grey and purple
THERE'S A SPOON IN MY EAR!

Two things

Awesome piece, just two questions:

1. Will you talk about the Genesis markII and markIII as well?
2. Before you say "It's just $49!" don't forget about inflation.

Hurrah G1

I like SA because they really let their G1 get spotlight. You kinda look like the AVGN by the way...

That said, it was a good review of that console, is a shame it didn't got the attention it deserved, but i think it had to be released when the NES was the shit and Nintendo ruled the world...it had to compete with the SNES and the Genesis instead.

Good video!.Will keep an eye for what's next.

-The fight is everything-

I want one...

Awesome video!
Hopefully I'll be able to get one.

...this was actually cool.

...this was actually cool. it's not often you see an awesome g1 submission. good job!

Great work! I really

Great work! I really enjoyed this, and I'll have to look into buying a NES 2 when I have the extra dinero.

Great show, MrFrosticles.

Great show, MrFrosticles. Would love to see more educational shows here on SA!

What my cousin needs

My cousin needs one of those. The blocky one she has is not working. That and I think went go the way of the game boy micro.

Looks great

I think this has alot of potential

Cool video

I remember when that came out. I thought it was worth buying until I saw the lack of A/V outputs. Once you've graduated from RF, you never go back. To this day, I've never been able to stomach RF, so that was an immediate turn-off.

My solution to the NES blinky problem was to simply by a new pin connector that didn't have to be pressed down. To this day, my classic NES works without having to press the games down.

I also clipped the 10NES chip. See, even if the games were running fine, it was really easy for that stupid lock-out chip to fall out-of-sync with the key chip that was in the cartridge. GAHD, I hated that!

I wish there was a remedy for the size. It is kind of an unnecessarily large system. Even the original Famicom is a dwarf compared to it. And have you ever opened one of the old NES games? Holy crap, those things have nothing in them! The actual game circuit board barely takes up half of the inside of the shell.

A lot of old consoles had that problem. It wasn't that they needed to be that large. The console makers apparently thought it was aesthetically pleasing to waste a lot of shelf space. Atari 2600 and the model 1 Sega Genesis are also notorious for being practically empty on the inside. I don't know why this was the case, although I suspect that since VHS recorders and cable boxes of the day were rather large, the console designers thought that anything connected to the TV also had to be ridiculously huge.

Granted, the consoles out today are huge, but at least you can turn the X-Box 360 on its side! Back then, everything had to be flat on the shelf.

I did enjoy the tunnels on the bottom of the NES, though. There were times that I'd been able to take advantage of the classic NES design by letting wires run from one component to another by simply allowing them to travel under the Nintendo. In fact, that was usually my solution to neatly control the A/V wires coming out the side.

Having smaller versions of a console is nice. I appreciate the shrunken redesigns for Sony PS2, SNES, and Sega Genesis. In fact, the Genesis 3 is wicked small. But NES 2 is a mixed bag. If it wasn't for the video problems, I would have gotten one.

I do like the dogbone controllers, though.

Very informative

I still love playing Mega Man 3, Turtles 2, Dragon Spirit and Mike Tyson's Punch-Out to this day. However, it takes awhile to get my NES to work properly. After watching your video, I will probably try to track down an NES II. Thanks for an informative and entertaining video.

Sweet, I have always known

Sweet, I have always known about this version of the NES but never knew much about it, and now I know.

great video man, good work

great video man, good work

Awesome 10 dollars on a yard sale??

WOW i've got to go, to America! CHEAP THINGS OUT THERE! SCREAMING FOR MY HELP! IM COMMING POOR CONSOLES, DONT WORRY I HAV PLEDGE OF FREE TIME FOR ANY OF YOU........ exept the Virtual boy.

Wow

I distinctly remember holding one of these at a Toys R Us back in the early summer of 1994. I had $60 in my pocket, and I was deciding on whether to pick a NES 2 up or Super Mario World 2. I ended up not picking up either, but the event stays in my mind because I never got that close to a NES 2 again. To think I had it in my hands and didn't get it is easily my worst "Should have bought it" moment in my gaming history (the second being the Wii I had in my hands and didn't buy back in December 06).

The worst part was it was around December later that year that someone told me about how I should get a NES 2 if I could since it would probably be a collector's item. I ended up going back to Toys R Us but guess what...yep...they no longer carried them. Neither did anyone else. I even still have dreams sometimes where I go in a Toys R Us and there's one on the shelf and I try to buy it and it won't ring up.

Wonderful Video

Awesome Work! It was an interesting video start to finish.

Only the most minor of complaints...
Maybe it was just me, but it seemed like the music at the beginning was a bit quiet, so I turned my volume up. When your voice came in, I nearly shit myself (okay not that bad, but MAN it was loud!)

Keep up the great work, off your other stuff, I look forward to future content!

Wow, I'm impressed

I actually enjoyed that video very much. There really was no flaws with it at all. It was simple, yet perfect. Keep it up, and I can't wait to watch more editions.

Famous Last Words: "Rat poison only kills rats..."

Amazing.

That was a great video, I learned a lot.
I knew about the NES 2 because of references made by the Nerd from time to time but I never knew the story behind it or that it was released so late into the console's life cycle.

P.S., Your Nintendo sign is sweet.

Xbox Live - Yeliks
PSN - Yelix
Don't feel like putting my Wii and Brawl codes at the moment, expect them soon.

Awesome history lesson

i never knew about the top loader so thanks for the info.

Well done, a great system

I bought one of these when it came out. I still have it, along with my entire NES library. Except that the Game Genie doesn't really fit in the slot (didn't know there was an adapter), I'd much rather use the NES 2 to play old school games.

Anyway, the video was really well done. It's a nice tribute to a console that didn't quite get it's day in the sun.

I like the original more.

i love my original NES. ive seen this NES2 thing everywhere but always just called it the "revamped one" since thats the only thing anyone here ever called it. but id never switch to that thing instead of my NES. and the pin thing he mentioned does suck to deal with but if ya slide the game back and forth it eventually gets the pins right and you can play as long as ya dont even slightly touch the NES in anyway that might move it .0000001 of an inch, because then it freezes or goes to that blue flashing screen of death. lol

Very Informative 9/10

nice nice

now what wasnt THIS the g1 submission, and the OTHER a blog?? craig must have switched them over...

Nice N64

That lime green N64 is cool, didn't even know it came in green.

and you also look exactly like my cousin...EXACTLY

Nice

a g1 submission thats awesome, l liked the video. Thanks for making it, it was informative

informative

Its pretty good,
the video doesn't disappoint. i like it, its informative over what happened to this console.
Yeah i too saw this the first time on the AVGN's video, i was wondering if its fake too (which isn't but can't blame me as i live in a country that makes fake consoles).

so, all is good, just one problem in the video though

when you zoom in like the almighty view-ish look, the view somehow is blurry. i dunno why, but, nevermind, no harm in this vid, its still good!

Great Video

It's on like Donkey Kong baby!!!!

Very Awesome.

Make more. I will watch.

Seems like you like Donkey

Seems like you like Donkey Kong. That's the way to go!

I remember seeing that when

I remember seeing that when I went to get a Sega gen. and that was at 1996. I wish I got that instead.

!

Very interesting.
I didn't know anything about the NES 2 before.

I got one.

I have the NES 2 and a few normal NES.

the NES 2 sucks though it only has RF adapter out put, and it was made for famicom carts not the huge USA NES carts. the famicom 2(AV Family Computer ) is the same unit exactly only the connector and lockout chip is changed.

the only reason it sell for so much is it's rare.

with out the RCA connectors on the NES the picture is BAD it's way bad do not even try on a HDTV even if it's a CRT HDTV. It looks bad on my CRT HDTV I use for my NES with the RF adaptor.

You will go blind it's like playing the game with a borken TV there is so much noise in the video it's not funny and you cant see any detail.

and I know no way to convert the RF of the NES 2 to s-video in a good way like the nes 1 RCA output.

the controlers are not as good either.

and the huge flaw any bump of that cart sticking out about 4456 feet from the NES 2 will lock up the game.

In some case it damages a NES cart that is how I came to own the NES 2 to my friend gave it to me in 1994 after It somewhat ruined his mega man 3 cart after bumping it.

the there is one improvement.

the 10NES authentication chip is gone that was teh real problem of your games not starting blowing in them does nothing, you just tought it does.

If you replace the 72 pin connector on the NEs 1 and cut the lockout chip pins then the NES 1 has this too and performs just as well starting games.

No more flashies and screen restarts at boot up of the nes.

I did this with all my NES 1's

the SNES 2 is just as bad No s-video output like a normal SNES.

So i never use it either the SNES 2 or NES 2 but i keep em.

Quality Review

That was thoroughly entertaining and ever since I saw the nerd use one I had Many questions about the infamous "Top Loader" that you answered in abundance.

Wow. The funniest thing is,

Wow. The funniest thing is, my brother-in-law has that thing and the first time I saw it, I said huh?

RAD!

That was classic screwattack material!
the top-loader looks so teat , i wish more were made...

Pretty good video! I own a

Pretty good video!

I own a "Famicom 2" also known as the A/V Famicom. Its design is the same as the NES 2 with the exception of being flat around the cartridge slot for the use of the Famicom Disk System. It also has the A/V support that is missing from the NES 2, which makes it an even more odd omission from the redesigned NES.

Ideas

i have some ideas for reviews and what it does and demonstrations :

Expansion pak for N64
Sega master system converter, its a genesis add-on to play master system games and how easy to get confused with Mark 1 and Mark 2 models

Nice

Very nice man. Didn't know that it was called "NES 2" originaly. btw You look kinda like AVGN :P

You know I love your stuff,

You know I love your stuff, man! I'm really glad to see this make the front page of SA! Great work, my man!

an excellent video!

dude i have watched tons of the same kind of videos and your was great! not boring and i could really understand what you were saying and also do you have a youtube account where you put your new episodes or will you in the future?

sure do

my youtube username is mcfrosticles. If you search for it on youtube (or just search Gaming Historian) my channel will come up. All new episodes will be posted here and on youtube.

Glad you like it! =)

Craig and Co, make this a Screwattack staple NOW!

Hey Craig and Screwattack:

I signed up just to make this post to further stress what so many other g1's have already proclaimed: the Gaming Historian is GOLD. Its simplicity and thorough content is perfect for your site, and personally, it's the best thing I've seen or heard Screwattack since Tom's departure. After being roped in by the AVGN's explosive wit, fury, and no holds barred reviews of shitty games, a few top 10's like none other on the web, the on-and-off laughs with Nametags, and Guru Larry's Retro Corner insanity, lately I've found very little to keep me more interested in keeping it here with SA as opposed to darting over to IGN (or dare I say Tom's Game Heroes site, although the Heroes are also kinda lacking with the Wow! factor). Screwattack has a TON of potential to be a favorite site for all gamers above all other sites out there, but recently, despite all the new people hopping on board and the redesign of the site, things have been more or less blah.

Charge it,

Awesome

I really liked this blog. It was informative and flowing. It was really well put together.

I'll be keep up with your blogs.

Also, I didn't know anything about the NES 2, so I actually learned something today. Thanks.

Excellent video, man!

Excellent video, man! Unfortunately, my NES 2 finally died after over a decade of flawless service. I still have the Dogbone controller, and hopefully I can find a new one as a reasonable price.

Wish I had one.

Who knows, maybe if I had a toploader I could play all my old games. I don't really know if anyone's original NES works these days anyway. The flashing screen of different colours, with the flashing LED light on the console drive me nuts.

I think it's funny when my friends see my trying to get my NES to work, 'cause they just go "Why are you constantly messing with that, it'll NEVER work again!". Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I hate how time can damage things.
