Nintendo and You. Nintendo has always been there, been your best friend, and your toughest opponent. It brought you together with friends and you missed it when you were grounded from it.
But now, here you are, feeling betrayed by your old best friend. Sony and Microsoft stepped in, draped their arm over your shoulder, and insisted, "You're older now. It's time to grow up. We can show you a good time." And so, as gamers, we have been led away from our old best friend. And we are convinced that it is Nintendo's fault for not "growing" along with us.
Recently, ScrewAttack presented us with an episode of Out of the Box which "reviewed" Wii Music: - http://screwattack.com/OotB/Ep6Archived
To quote Craig, "I've never felt so stupid playing a game, and that's saying a lot considering I have a Wii-mote in my hand." "This is one of those things that for the first time in my life I've ever kinda wanted to turn my back on Nintendo." "Nintendo has totally abandoned their core audience."
Hearing these words was slightly depressing. Is Wii Music the perfect game? Oh, no, far from it. But I would not say that it was ever made to intentionally "abandon their core audience". Shigeru Miyamoto himself has stated that he wants to make a fun system with fun games that anyone can play. He wanted to make games that his wife would enjoy, because she herself is not a gamer. He was finally able to achieve his dream of having his wife understand why video games can be fun. Can you imagine how rewarding that must feel?
Let's think back on what made Nintendo so great before in the past. Was it ever about graphics? Was it ever about what was "cool"? No, never. We played it for its games. So, what games DO we remember? Remember The Legend of Zelda? It was there in the beginning. And it returned again for this generation of gamers.

Remember Super Mario Bros.? There's something that's never changed.

Remember Metroid? We've had a few of those, too.

Pretty much everything that anyone ever loved about Nintendo is still there. And still being made. And their games haven't lost their classic feeling. But in the case of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, the play system has been slightly altered to work around a Wii remote. And it WORKS.
So, I'm just wondering, what is everyone's problem? Whenever Nintendo makes a game that's NOT adult-oriented, their audience throws a hissy fit and says that they've been forgotten.
Is that true? I don't believe so.
I personally believe that it's the audience that has abandoned Nintendo. Everyone else has "graduated" to a "higher league" of game play. Everything has better graphics, better gore, better online game play, the works. It can be compared to turning your back on your family because you've grown up and think your family is lame and only your new friends are cool.
But what happens when you switch over to these other gaming systems? When you listen to everyone playing online? You have to put up with cursing, racism, children who think that they can dish out verbal pain, kids who have been given M-rated games by parents who either don't care or don't pay attention... Sure, the audience may have gotten more "mature" in age, but they have not matured in behavior.
The games I see in other company's libraries are titles that typically give me an image of a gamer that becomes easily enraged. Honestly, these games make me think that people don't actually even enjoy the games they play. And if they do, they don't know how to show it. Back in the day, I remember hearing people say to each other, "Man, you got me good. That was a good game! Thanks!" Now, you just hear, "Oh, my GOD! You are so CHEAP! Stop doing that MOVE! JESUS, you F****T! I'm gonna kick your ASS, N****R!" Did I just not grow up with this? Did I just not "mature" like everyone else? Because despite the fact that the gaming audience is aging, and the level of maturity the games are supposed to be presenting has supposedly grown with us, why don't I feel any more "mature" when I play them?
Unfortunately, you're not going to be able to stop a new generation of gamers. Things will change. But don't you think it's interesting that, to be honest, Nintendo really has NOT changed? Nintendo has always had an atmosphere of fun, with a happy smiling face in a hat, overalls, and a mustache. Even through the course of console wars, even with a new kind of controller, even with a handheld that has used touch-screen functionality in addition to typical button-mashing, Nintendo is still the same fun it's always been. Nintendo has re-released classic games for handheld systems and as downloadable content. It's the same games we always loved. They've even managed to get hold of other dead systems' games and re-release them as well. Our past is still the same, asking us to remember it.
Honestly, there is one other thing that the Wii could be providing us, and that is more content from 3rd party developers. But that's the sad thing; everyone is too afraid to touch it. The gamers won't touch it because it hasn't "grown" along with them, and they think there's no good games for it. But there's no "good" games because 3rd party developers are afraid to make games for technology that they don't understand. If there could only be a little more persuasion from Nintendo gamers, just a little bit more of a push, I think we could find some truly intriguing material for the Wii. Unfortunately, it's been about two years now, and that STILL has not happened.
I just wonder sometimes, you know? Sonic... everyone remembers Sonic, right? Back in the day, it was always an all out battle - who was better? Sonic? Mario? Sonic is yet another piece of our childhood that no one is willing to turn their back on. Even though Sega is all but dead, people STILL have hope for Sonic games, even though you can always pretty much assume that most new Sonic releases are going to bomb royally.

So, why so much loyalty to a character that's practically dead, but not to a character or company that has actually managed to remain alive and well? It baffles me a little.
So, say what you will. Like what you will. I'm not telling you to like or enjoy anything that I do. But at the end of the day, when all is said and done, when I'm tired of the drama and the immature behavior of the "mature" games, there's one place I'll always go back to. I'll always go back to what reminds me of home. In the end, Nintendo is what continues to make me happy. Nintendo is where I truly have fun.
And, this is just me personally, but if Nintendo ever stops making games, I will stop playing them.

nintendo hasn't abandoned anyone
Has anyone seen TGS? new Tales, Sin and Punishment 2, Punch Out, Tatsunoku vs Capcom and more.
E3 just sucked
---------------------------------------------------------
"I'm gonna murdalize 'ya !"
E3... yeah, don't trust what you saw.
Tokyo Game Show is TRULY where it's at. See, TGS is open to the public, and THAT is where they show their true games that "real" gamers will be excited about. E3? It's a gaming SHOWCASE for members of the INDUSTRY. The American industry doesn't know any better. So what do they showcase? Gimmicky stuff that the stereotypical moms and kids are gonna go for.
Don't look to E3 for your proof. Look at Nintendo's actual library.
Thanks for bringing that up!

Well, you'll notice in my blog I also mentioned 3rd party game developers that made games for Nintendo. So, I count games ON the Nintendo as Nintendo games. At least in this situation. Basically, I'm talking about Nintendo exclusives.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Man this is how i felt ever since people started crying about wii music. I have a 3 year old daughter who cant play any of these new games. I bought wii music for her and it makes me happy to see her actually playing something. Thank you for not changing Nintendo.
What Nintendo Lacks?
if nintendo had final fantasy 13 and versus 13, MGS4, mirrors edge and other great games on the Wii they would have been really hard core. there haven't really been any fancy 3rd party games on the Wii and even on the N64 and Gamecube. But I will say this, nintendo always have the best 1st party games of each generation, but its not enough.
Honestly? In my opinion,
Honestly? In my opinion, Final Fantasy games just need to stop. I am not sad that XIII will not be on the Wii. Metal Gear Solid? Maybe. But Konami actually really wants it to be on a system OTHER than the PS3. And MGS has been known to jump to Nindendo in the past.
This is also why I say, though, Wii DOES need more 3rd party games, but everyone's too afraid to make them.

I've always though that, I
I've always though that, I suppose developers are too scared to take a chance so they go for the sure thing and make a game other consoles.
Nintendo makes games that appeal to a younger audience (i.e. kids) pretty much always have, and they're good at it. I agree hearing Craig say those word was pretty depressing and a bit sickening (though that may just be me). I like Wii Music, and regardless of what the reviews say, I think it's quite fun and it is something I play ever now, it's not a great game, but it sure isn't the years worst. Anyway this deserves a top g1 post, someone get on it.

A Fantastic Level-headed Post
I couldn't agree more with this post, I actually had a hard time believing what I heard when all the same people who were stoked for the "Revolution" in 2005 suddenly thought they were too cool for it in 2007. Doesn't make me have any less fun :)
Also agree on the "wii music" comments. The "wii music" episode was when I stopped caring about "Out of the Box". Screwattack Unscripted (specifically stuttering craig unscripted) clearly does not work well.
Great read.
It certainly upped my spirit. Some people say things like "there aren't enough good games for the Wii," I have a hard time getting all the ones I want! I don't have enough money for all the Wii games I want so I don't know how many games these people want!

WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT - Just a few more wants to finish off the comment.
www.youtube.com/MJC312 - for bad walkthroughs.
You have no idea how much I
You have no idea how much I agree with you. Every single word. I play games for fun, and Nintendo is still making games fun. They haven't changed, they just want more people to be able to have fun as we gamers do.~
Sonic
You have to look at it considering who's cooler. Mario's a fat plumber. Sonic is a bad ass. Now, I hate Sonic's new games, but he's still cooler than Mario. People like cool things and that's why they're so committed to him.
And believe me, I'm not biased on this. I'd choose Crash Bandicoot (at least, I would eight years ago).
Amazing
This is the THE most amazing blog I have ever read. Literallly! I thank You, MarzGurl, for writing this! I've been a Nintnedo fan all my life and have been loyal to them to this very day. I couldn't have said anything better, seriously. I congratulate you!
You should have this posted in more websites as well. You truly express and explain what Nintedo is all about and always has been. This brings back memories and almost tears of joy...
Thanks again!
Quality
This was a very quality blog and I agree with it. Nintendo is my favorite system company and I have been with them for many years, but it's not like I hate PS3 or 360. The Super Nintendo, my older brother, and Controller #2 were my best friends for most of my childhood and it saddens me that people have drifted so far away from a fun company like Nintendo. I think the mere fact that the Wii appeals to people other than gamers makes the "mature" gamers not want to be associated with it. Well, I'll never turn my back on nintendo and I'm glad to see some one else won't either.
that was... beautiful
the good ol' days. now everyone is a fanboy, are a bitch if the graphics don't look good, and always want gore. Gears is a fine example. It's a fun game but i bet people wouldn't like it as much if there weren't any M rated stuff
P.S. Your blog is first blog that i've fully read.
Nice Blog
I really liked your blog, even though i totally disagree. People feel like nintendo abandoned them because of the games. People like Mario and Zelda games, no doubt, but they can only pump one out every so often. Since third party developers dont want to touch the wii, its all up to Nintendo. And instead of evolving by producing online games (this is what people want) and shooters, they provide casual games. And instead of correcting this, they dont. They just produce more and more (Wii music is example). That is why people feel betrayed. Honostly, though i dont blame nintendo though. Most people who buy the Wii are families and casual people. Nintendo is a business, right?
You are right, there ARE
You are right, there ARE certain other things that Nintendo could be doing. And since Nintendo is a business, not only do they have the more broad audience to appeal to, but also their more narrowed as well. Those "real" gamers have been wanting more in-depth online gameplay for a long time. That's certainly a market they could easily tap into, but they have yet to do so.
Still, though, Nintendo just plain makes me the happiest.

Yeah I respect that
Yeah I like nintendo alot because when ever i play the Wii i get a unique experience. It just is usually a single player experience, and i just need my online. Plus a reason shooters (the "fad" now a days) just don't work on the Wii that well, although World at War i heard was good.
I don't understand how not
I don't understand how not producing online games and shooters would make one feel betrayed, Nintendo has showed that they don't need to imitate other companies to sell their games, they should not have the change because everyone else is, that's as a great once said is bullshit, I don't want to see Mario with a gun nor do I want to see Link cut someone's head of with blood gushing out, that's not the Nintendo I know and love. If anything, more third parties need to step up and actually try to make a game (original would be nice)that can work on the Wii, perhaps that's why I commend the makers of Mushroom Men and Deadly Creatures, while the developers may be small, at least someone's trying something new or at least new by today's standards.

------------------
Weakness of the Wii
The general weakness of the Wii is in third party support. Yeah, nintendo games are awesome (for the most part), but they are severly lacking in the third party area. This is for a number of reasons (I believe).
1. Disinterest in the hardware - Wii has, undeniably, the worst graphics of the current generation. To modern gamers (Gears of War Resistance Halo fanatics) graphics are EVERYTHING, and developers see that. So, they instead opt to go for the other systems, where graphics are better. In the end, the consumers fault.
2. Image - The Wii is presented as family friendly, and with modern gamers, thats a painful road. People these days want blood guts and gore, none of which the Wii provides. Seriously, the only blood and guts game for the Wii is No More Heroes, and thats because Suda51 loves a challenge, and loves Nintendo. Thank you, Suda51, for this, and other things. We will never be able to repay you enough...
3. "Family Friendly" means "Bad" or "Easy to Develop" for developers - Seriously, look through the Wii's library. A good portion of it are quick cash-ins. How many Petz games does a system really need? Gamers see these, rather than the amazing games, like Zelda, Mario, and No More Heroes, and instantly assume all Wii games are like that. In all honesty, I've asked people, and they've told me as much.
4. Sony and Microsoft don't make games - You may see something like "Microsoft Presents" or "Sony Computer Entertainment Presents" but neither of those companies actually make games. They get other people to make games for them. All Microsoft and Sony have to do is update the hardware (I see little to no difference between the PS2/PS3 and XBox/XBox360 aside from the graphical update). Nintendo has to create the new hardware (the Wii) AND develop good games.
5. Face It - You Can't Do Any Better - People constantly complain about Wii Music not being 'hardcore.' I read an interview with Miyamoto, and he said that this was a game he WANTED to make. If we got the opportunity to make our own mages, that WE want to play, chances are no one else would want to play it (unless you're one of those Gears Of War Resistance Halo fanatics, upon which you don't count because your brain has obviously committed suicide). I for one enjoy turn based RPGs, my favorite being Chrono Trigger (less than a week, squee!), while most, hell, all the people I know hate those games
Wow, that was more ranty than I intended it to be...
I WOULD apologize to everyone who is a Gears of War Resistance Halo fanatic, but I stand by what I said. Do yourself a favor, try something WITHOUT a well armored space marine or what have you. In fact, try something thats NOT a shooter...
"These days, a game is considered 'original' if the well armored male protagonist has a moustache." Ben Cronshaw, Zero Punctuation
what does any of this have
what does any of this have to do with nintendo abandoning us? we arent here to bash the wii we are here to discuss the travesty that is Wii music
>_>
I don't think Nintendo HAS abandoned us. The point was why THIRD PARTY developers have, for the most part, abandoned the Wii, or just release bad games for it.
Wii Music was Miyamoto's project, and while we may not like it much, he certainly did, another topic my little rant discussed.
Yahtzee for the win
Couldn't have picked a better quote to sum up much of this generation.
ok i didnt read all of your
ok i didnt read all of your blog so i dont know if you covered this or not and im sorry if you did feel free to bash me
but the thing is they said before E3 that core audiences would be pleased that said to us that the we who have stuck with them since the NES or SNES days we who have stuck with them for like 10-20 years or even the N64 fans would be getting a great suprise not the 6 year olds who are the current fans and who dont know about Kid Icarus, dont know Ocarina of Time, dont know Super Metroid , or anything before Wii Sports or Wii Fit
the Wii Resort thing was kind of interesting the Wii motion Plus was interesting but as Craig when the lights went off and all that we expected something big something to look forward to when we were watching the E3 coverage from where ever and when the 6 year olds were watching it with parents and we saw it was Wii music 2 things happened.
1:We just sort of stared and said "WTF is this"
2:the 6 year olds said "oh wow"
and behind the scenes nintendo said "ok we can spend more time on a *insert good game here* and make money from true fans slower or we can pull together a collection of crap songs and minigames with no appeal to anyone over the age of 6 and make money quicker from a fad. hmmm lets go with the fad"
that is how they abandoned us
Good point
I agree with most of what you've said. First, on Nintendo. Did they "abandon" their core audience? I don't think so. Just because they made one game aimed specifically at the younger audience doesn't mean that they've "abandoned" their loyal fans from 20+ years ago.
Take one Nintendo franchise for example.. Pokemon. I see both 5 yr olds play it casually as well as people my age (I'm 22) play the game at a competitive level. When I received my Pokemon Platinum in my mailbox 3 weeks ago I was thrilled until 5 seconds into the game. WTF? There's no kanji in any of the text. The entire game is written in hiragana/katanaka. It's frustrating as hell to read but I understand that Nintendo has to consider its 5 yr olds kids playing the game who can't read kanji.
Anyway, I went a bit off topic there.. So back to Nintendo's core audience being pissed about Wii music.. This game is strictly aimed at children (or maybe the elderly) who cannot play guitar hero or rock band. Think of this as rock band of kids. If you're 20 something should you go buy this game? Probably not since you'll have as much fun as Craig or Jose did during that episode of OotB.
Regarding your topic "who abandoned who" i don't think anyone abandoned anyone. It's just that the core audience aren't used to seeing Nintendo releasing a childrens' product and are overreacting to it. Most avid Nintendo fans want to see a new Mario/Zelda game like every month and we know that's not possible (and if it is possible those games will probably suck). Just give it some time.. If Wii music sells well to its targeted audience then I'm sure Miyamoto will have something else in the works soon. Should we keep complaining about all of his childrens' titles or should we just make the best of it and wait patiently for the next big mario/zelda/metroid title?
Anyway, there are some games only children will be able to enjoy and only some games that adults will enjoy. Nintendo made a kids' game and it should be reviewed as a kids' game, not on the same scale as a game that's aimed at the more mature audience.
One minor thing I kind of want to add is that to me it sounds like you're upset about the more hardcore games due to the fact that the immature trash talking of online gamers are ruining your experience. I believe it's mostly a cultural thing, as I mentioned in my first blog: here http://screwattack.com/blog/24313 . It's really not the game (or the developer's) fault that allowed this to happen.. I mean the game doesn't talk crap, it's the players that does. So hopefully you can just look beyond that and don't let those people disturb your experience.
You're absolutely right,
You're absolutely right, that the games with the whiners are not necessarily the developers' faults as much as it is the gamers' faults. However, there's a particular KIND of game that those people are drawn to, and those are our newer, more mature games. Again, not the developers' faults. It's just a curious observation. They behave as though they don't even enjoy the games they play. I just can't personally see the attraction.

This blog was amazing:O It
This blog was amazing:O It was worth the read...and you know what...Your last sentence basically represents all of our thoughts...I think that If Nintendo ever stopped making video games, I would stop playing them. As for Sonic...Well lets hope everybody's favourite headgehog won't suck this time around(I really do praise the lords that it won't...I love sonic more than I do mario)
Okay, I'm going to say it
Okay, I'm going to say it again, Nintendo have always made games for kids, they always have since the NES and early on because video games were at the time originally geared toward children. Nintendo(or Miyamoto) wanted to try something a bit different and people flipped, and they're acting as if it's the end of all gaming and as if Nintendo is the only one who makes good Nintendo games, get over yourselves.

awsome
exelent blog :D
I honestly don't care
I honestly don't care whether a game is "kiddy" or "mature". If it's good I'll play it. Here's the thing with the Wii. There are only a good 6-8 games that I honestly enjoyed playing. When you mentioned that Mr. Miyamoto wanted his non gamer wife to play games, I found that to be slightly selfish of him. Sure, Nintendo's work is superb (unless it's a game with Wii- as the prefix) but when the 360 and PS3 are pumping out triple A titles, you can't expect people to stick with the Wii. If it wasn't for those 7 or 8 superb games and the virtual console, the Wii would be total garbage.
Depends on the type of gamer!
For me, the PS3 is not pumping out triple A titles. I can think of two good games that fits my tastes and those are LBP and MGS4. Other than those two, nothing attarcts me. On the 360 there are maybe five games that attracts me; Eternal Sonata, Lost Odyssey, Silent Hill: Homecoming, Blue Dragon and maybe Infinite Undiscovery.
On the Wii however, I can think of thirteen games that attracts me, which is why the Wii is my console of choice!
Zelda: Twilight Princess
Super Paper Mario
Super Mario Galaxy
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
No More Heroes
Disaster Day of Crisis (Europe, Japan)
Fatal Frame 4 (Japan)
Sonic and the secret rings
Super Smash Brothers Brawl
Mario Kart Wii
Manhunt 2
Metroid Prime 3
Animal Crossing: City Folk
Bottom line is; not everybody wants the grey American shooters, some people, like me don't consider them AAA titles.
And I'm with you.
And I'm with you. :D

Good ol' clean fun.
Well put.
When it comes to fun or serious competitive gaming, to me it all depended who I'd be playing the game with/against. Badmouthing and general hatred whenever playing games has gotten so much worse over time tho.
I suppose it's hard to let a good friend stay behind... You want that friend to keep up with you and like the same things you do.
I'll admit some of the recent Nintendo titles don't really appeal to me but I'm glad to see the younglings in my family enjoying them just as I had been enjoying simple and fun games back in the day. You have to take it for what it is.
Don't go playing a go-kart game and expect a full fledged racing simulator.
Why many gamers feel abandoned
The problem with Nintendo is that they're expanding into other audience areas but don't PR enough of their "core" gamer titles. IMO, a company as large as Nintendo should always have "core" gamers in anticipation of at least one high profile title.
At the last E3, people were expecting the announcement of a new Kid Icarus game, or Zelda, or something. But instead we got Wii Music, which arguably isn't even a game. Is it okay for Nintendo to branch out? Definitely! But that shouldn't stop them from working on the "core" games too! At least they eventually came back and admitted they were working on a new Pikmin.
I'm sure Nintendo is already working on the next Zelda/Mario/Metroid/Starfox game. But they need to keep up with the gamer PR. As it is, they tossed out all of their core titles in the first year and half of launch, and then left core gamers with almost nothing to look forward to but 3rd party titles, and we all know how well that's worked out overall. Even if the game doesn't launch for another two years, get us interested in something.
1000 g1 points to you!
