Welcome to another episode of "If 3rd Party Developers Entered the Console War". Today I'm going to be talking about Square.
Once again, here is the list of things that I'm going to be identifying:
The developer
The console (relating it to another console)
The games for the system
How it would handle against the Wii, the PS3, and Xbox 360
The price range
What it would offer
Alright. With that being said, lets get started.
The Developer:
Square (I give up on the whole Enix or Soft thing. If you know, leave it in the comments) is wildly considered by the gaming community as the best RPG creating companies of all time, with their best franchie being the Final Fantasy series.
The Console:
If Square made a console, I would see it as a mix between the Atari 7800 and the PS3. Like the PS3, if Square made a console, it would be solid. I'll go into greater detail about why I put the Atari 7800 in the mix when we get to the games section because the reasons are largely based on the software. I am in no way saying that if Square made a console, it would end up like the Atari 7800.
The Games: As I said before in the console section, the Atari 7800's software library, I feel, would be a reflection of Square's 1st party lineup. The Atari 7800 was very based on maze games such as Pac-Man. I feel that Square's 1st party library would be RPG heavy games. Square's main series is Final Fantasy. Unless they develop a new franchise, they won't have a very large 1st party line up. The 3rd party lineup will be equivalent to what the PS3 has.
How it would handle in a console war: I believe that Square would not touch motion control with a ten foot ski pole. To be honest, I don't believe that they would need it. However, that could cause a decrease in the amount of people buying it. It would probably be in last place. However, not by much. Most of the RPG community would buy the console.
The price range: For Square, I'd say $190-$300. Like the 360, they'd charge for online from the start. Square would also use usernames, as opposed to friend codes.
What it would offer:
Really nice online
Maybe a Virtual Console for released and unreleased Final Fantasy Games
Avatar who would be more detailed than the ones on the 360
Next Time: Episode 4: Rare
That console would be petty
That console would be petty good cept for the fact it will lack variety in first party games, jrpg wold get boring after a while o.0
They make other games...
Square has made:
Platformers (Brave Fencer Musashi)
Shmups (Einhander)
Fighting Games (Bushido Blade)
Racing Games (Chocobo Racing)
Beatemups (The Bouncer)
And others. Square has quite a wide variety of quality (a few not so quality) games in their catalog. They are just too often overshadowed by Final Fantasy. It happens all the time, people go: "Hey, Final Fantasy! I want" or "Ick, they make Final Fantasy. Next company please!"
