This week's g1 Submission features a review from a PS3 title... seriously! While we think Lair sucks balls what does g1 neverchris think? Did we screw up on this one and should reconsider?
A) The gameplay footage doesn't illistrate what he is talking about. It's like random clips.
B) He is just reading from a writen review. This could have easily just been a writen blog post. The point of video is to use the medium for what it is usful for, as in visualy doing what writen text can't.
C) It's so last year. Who cares about Lair? Everyone has already heard a million times everything this "video" has to say.
So there you have it, three reasons why this shouldn't have been considered for the front page. I can think of several g1s off the top of my head that should have been featured instead. I don't know if they submited anything, but if they had this should not have been picked.
Submitted by neverchris on Sun, 08/31/2008 - 12:04pm.
If this is how you feel then please give the review a better chance. The gameplay footage shows how the game plays. My voice over tells how I feel about the game. I cover two different topics in only half the time as it would take to merely do one or the other. I'm not quite interacting with the video as many other video creators do, but that isn't entirely my style. Such can make for entertaining videos, and I do try to show what's going on, but then I don't want to be just like everyone else.
As for the game being too old, I would almost primarily consider this review to be a statement on motion control sensing and developer pride ruining a potentially good game. The review for Lair is merely a platform for delivering this message. But then, at the same time, I try showcase my videogaming experience as well.
But thanks for watching. Please check out some of my other videos before totally writing off my style as it is a bit unique and may put some off at first until they really get into it.

Regarding your 3rd argument - "It's so last year"?
What?!
Where does it written that a reviewer on ScrewAttack needs to review only recent games?
I thought the site was for all games, old and new (and Lair isn't that old of a game).
Of coarse reviewers can review new and old games. It's just that Lair is a mediocere game that's not worth such a late review. I'm sure the reviewer himself has seen or read several reviews stating the same critisisms.
If he had reviewed a lesser know game or at least a game that hasn't been talked to death about than I wouldn't have made that argument.
This review redundent at this point, it doesn't give the viewer any new information.
Submitted by Farmhouse on Sun, 08/31/2008 - 5:13am.
I liked the review. I guess mainly cause it effected me personally. I had a used copy of Lair in my hand and for $15 I thought, how bad COULD it be.
I passed cause I found a copy of The Darkness for $8, but was still pondering Lair... Until I saw this review.
I believe even at a YEAR later is serves its purpose. Lair is going to get cheaper and cheaper and more and more used copies will show up for really cheap! So we might turn a blind eye to original bad reviews or we may have just forgot.
Anyway, I'm sure there have been better g1 submissions, but there have been worse too!
As for the video review part, yeah the visuals didn't match 100%, but it's like music videos. Bands don't make music so they can make an awesome video, they make a video so people can hear an awesome song.
Yeah, he COULD have just posted a blog, but that would be like buying the new Metallica CD and only finding the lyrics inside!

Although you are correct, people have spoken about lair a bunch of times, the video did for the most part portray what he was stating, maybe if you actualy PAID ATTENTION then you would have seen it as well as most likely what he is reading was written by him and you could ither have him wing it and stutter like Crazy or you could have him do it the professional way. I tried to make the review more relevant covering not only Lair itself but the entire motion sensing phenomenon which is absolutely current even today. Most existing reviews for this game were also done prior to the analog stick patch.
I appreciate the constructive criticism though. I feel the video clips do a good job at showing how this game plays, how the graphics look, and so on which saves me from trying to unnecessarily paint a picture through text of something that could have otherwise been easily just shown. Video reviews are also a lot more fun :-)

A) Perhaps he doesn't have a video capture device and has to use already existing footage. So since he might not have a vid capping device...should he not be allowed to have a submission that makes it to the front page?
B) What's wrong with him reading a review as long as he wrote it? This sounds like a nitpick on your part.
C) Who cares if it's "so last year"? If you used that kind of mentality, 99% of the AVGN's reviews would never be on the frontpage.

I partly agree with theperfect10gamer, and it seems you misunderstand him/her.
A) If the video doesn't directly illustrat the reviewer's comments than it's disconnected and can be distracting.
B) It doesn't look like theperfect10gamer is against reading from text, but is that it doesn't need to be a video. I strongly agree with this one, there are now a ton of video reviewers that never do anything with the video worth watching when the review could have been a simple blog entry or even a pod cast.
C) Ok, this one isn't that big of a deal, but the different between this review and the AVGN/VGV stuff is that Lair is not a vintage game. Lair has been talked about to death already.
Anyway, so yeah theperfect10gamer has a few decent points.
Submitted by Superman64 on Sun, 08/31/2008 - 2:29pm.
A) I didn't think it was distracting. He's talking about Lair...and he's showing Lair in action. Now if he was just showing random stuff that had nothing to do with the game while talking about Lair...then I could see how that would be distracting.
B) A lot of videos wouldn't have to exist if we went by that then. And that would be kind of boring.
C) So if other people reviewed a game...no one else can?

Actually... Now that I look at it, IT IS THE BEST CONTROLLER I HAVE EVER USED!!!! YAAAAAAAAAAAY!!

Based on WarioWare, I'd say the controls are perfect for what one needs to do for the game. It's true that the motion sensitivity of the controllers is not perfect, but I forgive that because it is the first generation to feature such technology, and it should only get better from here. Would you fault the first video games to come out like Pong or anything on the Atari 2600 because the technology was new at the time and as such the visuals, sound, and yes even some of the game play was limiting?

A bit pretentious in a few places where opinions are stated as facts, and I'd like the brightness turned up on whatever you're using, but pretty good overall. Factor 5 hasn't made a really good game since the N64... Rogue Leader was polished, but ridiculously easy and simplistic. Rebel Strike strayed waaayyyy too far from what made the Rogue Squadron series good, and was even easier and more simplistic still. Lair was all you just said. Let's hope the bad reviews of their past games, and their turning back to Wii and working with relative restraints again forces to back into good game design.

To be honest, the whole motion sensor on a controler on the PS3, it does'nt help. Unlike the Wii controls, it was different because you were'nt holding a regular controler. Hell, like in No More Heroes or Twilight Princess, I had some great fun slashing enemies and pretending to have a sword. Because of that, graphics does'nt matter to me because I am having fun in gameplay.
Finally have a Wii and online!

Lair isn't that bad. People never really gave it a fair shake. All of the PS3 fanboys were waiting and waiting for it and the hype killed it. The controls: Take what.. 30 minutes to get used to? And now they have a patch to use the analog sticks. Gameplay is fun and varies ect. Graphics are nice. Music is awesome, sound is good. The only complaints I have with the game are the targeting and trying to find your objectives. Other than that, it's still a pretty good game and definitely not one of the worst PS3 games.

Dude, its Lair...NOT LAYER! Made me cringe every time i heard him speak the title of the game. And why a Lair review? As others have pointed out, people are so over this game by now. It was crap, and everybody knows it. Let it die! Just about any other submission must have been better then this. I didn't even bother seeing it to the end.
Submitted by neverchris on Sun, 08/31/2008 - 10:25am.
Lair is an important game to remember because it's very iconic in what's been going wrong with videogames during this generation. Perhaps the videogame itself, being such a mediocre crap-fest, is utterly forgettable, but then I can't think of any other videogame that better represents botched motion sensing controls. That's also why I choose this review for submission. It's a message that perhaps motion sensing wasn't all it was initially cracked up to be.
But anyway, thanks for giving the review a chance. I recommend checking out some of my other reviews before passing ultimate judgment.

Are you by any chance suffering from full or partial decrease in the ability to detect or understand sounds? I live in europe and I understood pretty much the whole review.
That is how it is said by a person with a standard American accent. The same goes for the words horse and hoarse, except for people from Boston most Americans say the words exactly the same. So lair and layer sound the same becuase it's part of the USA style of speech.
Don't listen to grayclaw, his account says he's Canadian so he's probably just sore over every other English speaking country laughing at his accent, eh. You know what I'm talk'n aboot.

I've loved all of neverchris's reviews since I saw his review of Cave Story on the ScrewAttack forums. His reviews are entertaining, they're humorous, and I know everything I need to know about a game at the end. Heck, I've even bought a game or two after seeing how great they were on neverchris's reviews, and he reviews quite a few games that don't have a review on the big name sites like Gamespot.

I'll have you know that I've been activly coming to this wbsite for over a year and only just registered recently. That doesn't mean I'm a noob or a looser.
I also didn't flame anyone, I stated my opinion and that's what screwattack is about. I didn't do it in an offensive way I explained my views in detail.
Would you rather I just post a "This sucks LOL!"? I wouldn't do that, but I also wouldn't stand silently when I think something needs to be said.
Whether they're late, whether it shares your opinion, or goes against it... reviews are good.
Don't complain about the relevance of this review in relation to the game's release. What about those of us who haven't decided to play it, and were looking for some more insight into the game? Whether the game is new or old, new reviews aid gamers' in their purchases.
"When there is no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth."
This was a great review and as we speak I'm subscribing to your youtube. I like that you voiced over previous game play than go through a million examples. Anyway it was a good review and I'm sorry people on this site would rather give crap than give you congrats on making the frontpage.
As far as I know this game was patched and made at least decent not long after it's release. What's the point of making a flame/rant video on issues that have allready been adressed? It's kinda like complaining about how it is to live in the Soviet union....
Though the game was old, I still enjoyed hearing this guy's opinion... This was a damn fine review... and the clips weren't that random at all. He didn't have to point out when the controls went wacky, I saw it. So tell those negative guys to go screw themselves and make their own reviews. Looking forward to seeing more in the future. By the way, AVGN does 15-10 year old games and I love that guy.

I look and read all these comments on how he reviewed an old game but if you look it up the game is only 1year and 1 day old. Seriosly, thats like saying Halo 3 or Warhawk are old which is completely not true. Sure the timing of the review was a little odd but still the game could be labeled as current.
people can be dumb when it comes to things like a video game's age or graphics. I have games that are almost ten years old and that's still not old to me... I think when you start nearing the twenty year marker, then yeah. I'm tired of hearing the graphics issue with people, so I'm not going to touch that one. Finally, I had probably heard about Lair maybe once before this, so it wasn't "talked to death" for me... I enjoyed the review and it was informative. Good job man.

My road, my journey
Good go at it
It would of been marked higher if some clips followed the review itself, but you got your point across and I didn't start to feel really bored half-way through.
Quick newbie question. How would one go about submitting a video for a chance of it to be considered a G1 submission? Do you just post a blog? Thanks in advance.
Meh...
It's not a bad review but not a good voice for this kind of thing.
The two Drakan games are better
If you wanna play a dragon riding game you're better off with the two Drakan games.
_______

Right on
Never played the second one but Drakken was an amazing game.
Panzer Dragoon Orta was
Panzer Dragoon Orta was pretty fucking sweet.
Motion Sensors...some are win and fail.
Brawl Code: 3737-9909-1968
Kart Code: 2921-9519-4290
Third Target: Nervous Nick
Secondary Target: HS Ben
Primary Target: Stuttering Craig!
Still looking for a kickass Signature!
dragons are awesome
but this game is not
Lair isn't that bad. People
Lair isn't that bad.
Wow awesome!!
Just wanted to say thanks ScrewAttack for featuring my video. A nice surprise to wake up to :-) I have a lot of fun creating them.
I'll be taking any criticism as constructively as possible since I'm always looking to improve. If for some reason this video automatically turns you off, please check out some of my others before fully deciding you hate them. But even if you do, that's okay, and thanks for giving them a chance.
Neverchris is good because
Neverchris is good because his reviews are REALLY well written and humorous. He definitely deserves to be featured.
I highly recommend checking out his other reviews, especially the Wii games. He is brutally honest and I think alot of reviewers could learn from his style.
Good job and congrats on being featured!
now that u mention it
your rit about motion control and how it works for only some games
It reminds me of GT
His delivery reminds me of the reviews over at GameTrailers, which isn't a bad thing per se.
Should've be like Ace Combat.
If Factor 5 made the gameplay like in Ace Combat, then damm, this game could have been good at least.
I mean, i know controlling a dragon is not like controling a jet, but on AC games, it's easy to dodge, turn, dive and shoot on your enemies.
If they managed to do so, this game would be at least good.
PS: By the way, i hate when i click on the "Add new comment" link, before i finish to watch the video, and have to load it all up again...
"Layer was blahblahblah!"
Lair is an important game to
Lair is an important game to remember because it's very iconic in what's been going wrong with videogames during this generation.
People all have different
People all have different accents which makes it seem like they are mispronouncing a word when they really aren't.
Greyclaw
People who are intolerant of other people's accents or speech patterns need to take a class on linguists and culture.
Also, if you didn't watch the entire video, than you have no leg to stand on in complaining about it.

I'm an old school gamer, but I'm still hip. Wait, when referring to oneself as, "Hip", does it reverse its meaning?
"People who are intolerant
"People who are intolerant of other people's accents or speech patterns need to take a class on linguists and culture."
Its a ENGLISH SPEAKING review! I don't care about his culture. If someone does a review in english you should expect it to be understandable.
I think you're going a
I think you're going a little overboard man. I do believe my review was very well understandable.
Are you by any chance
Are you by any chance suffering from full or partial decrease in the ability to detect or understand sounds? I live in europe and I understood pretty much the whole review.
yeah whatever
The review was poor, thats my opinion. And submissions must have been really crap this Sunday if this was first choice.
Thanks asshole. You know,
Thanks asshole. You know, it's perfectly acceptable for you to just stop posting and realize that perhaps my video just wasn't your style.
Standards
That is how it is said by a person with a standard American accent. The same goes for the words horse and hoarse, except for people from Boston most Americans say the words exactly the same. So lair and layer sound the same becuase it's part of the USA style of speech.
Don't listen to grayclaw, his account says he's Canadian so he's probably just sore over every other English speaking country laughing at his accent, eh. You know what I'm talk'n aboot.
GTA4 gives option..
..but it's just too hard to use.
I've loved all of
I've loved all of neverchris's reviews since I saw his review of Cave Story on the ScrewAttack forums. His reviews are entertaining, they're humorous, and I know everything I need to know about a game at the end. Heck, I've even bought a game or two after seeing how great they were on neverchris's reviews, and he reviews quite a few games that don't have a review on the big name sites like Gamespot.
@ theperfect10gamer STFU!!!
@ theperfect10gamer
STFU!!! you have been a G1 for 8 hours as of the time of this entry and you are already flaming at someone for no reason.. This is a great review and entertaining you my friend are the definition of noob and looser at the same time so how about you do us all a favor and if you dont have anything nice to say dont say anything at all!!!!
I'll have you know that I've
I'll have you know that I've been activly coming to this wbsite for over a year and only just registered recently. That doesn't mean I'm a noob or a looser.
I also didn't flame anyone, I stated my opinion and that's what screwattack is about. I didn't do it in an offensive way I explained my views in detail.
Would you rather I just post a "This sucks LOL!"? I wouldn't do that, but I also wouldn't stand silently when I think something needs to be said.
All Reviews Are Good
Whether they're late, whether it shares your opinion, or goes against it... reviews are good.
Don't complain about the relevance of this review in relation to the game's release. What about those of us who haven't decided to play it, and were looking for some more insight into the game? Whether the game is new or old, new reviews aid gamers' in their purchases.
"When there is no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth."
I would like to add my two cents.
This was a great review and as we speak I'm subscribing to your youtube. I like that you voiced over previous game play than go through a million examples. Anyway it was a good review and I'm sorry people on this site would rather give crap than give you congrats on making the frontpage.
As far as I know this game
As far as I know this game was patched and made at least decent not long after it's release. What's the point of making a flame/rant video on issues that have allready been adressed? It's kinda like complaining about how it is to live in the Soviet union....
NICE
Though the game was old, I still enjoyed hearing this guy's opinion... This was a damn fine review... and the clips weren't that random at all. He didn't have to point out when the controls went wacky, I saw it. So tell those negative guys to go screw themselves and make their own reviews. Looking forward to seeing more in the future. By the way, AVGN does 15-10 year old games and I love that guy.
Swing your sword
Legend of zelda for the wii has OK controlls I guess
You don't really nead to moving the controller up and down gives the same command as swinging the controller. It is essentailly like swinging the controller rather tan pressing "A" woo cool that so tardcore
Sorry
sorry i intended to reply to comment but instead posted a comment.

I rather
I rather watch Armake's take on the game. He didn't beat the control horse to death and he was a little fairer to the game.
OLD?
I look and read all these comments on how he reviewed an old game but if you look it up the game is only 1year and 1 day old. Seriosly, thats like saying Halo 3 or Warhawk are old which is completely not true. Sure the timing of the review was a little odd but still the game could be labeled as current.
My argument: Who cares if
My argument:
Who cares if it's old? Since when was screwattack about everything modern in gaming?
Since never.
people can be dumb when it
people can be dumb when it comes to things like a video game's age or graphics. I'm looking forward to checking out your other stuff.
