ScrewAttack is located in Dallas, TX, which is why it's located where it is.  As far as I know, PAX is the ONLY event that holds its event on opposite sides of the country at different points in the year (PAX and PAX East).  SGC would probably need to get about to PAX's size before they started holding multiple locations.  And even then, who knows if it'd ever be out-of-country?

Anyway, no, they have nothing organized in Canada right now.

So I plan on heading down to SGC in 2010, and I was looking for some tips on how to best enjoy the event.

Some questions:

Where should I stay?
How much money should I bring?
Who should I bring (friends that don't visit Screwattack/play video games)?
Should I drive or fly (I live in New Jersey)?
What panels/events are the best to attend?
What should I bring (consoles/games)?
Is there anything I should be prepared for that I wouldn't normally expect?

I've never been to a con before, so I'd keep that in mind when responding. Also, I hope this thread helps anyone out who has the same questions. If anyone does, please ask them!

A lot of those are probably more up to you than anything, and other people have already helped answer, but I'll give my 2 cents on a couple things as well.

Money:

As far as money, they way I look at it when I go to a con, if I go home with money left in my wallet...I didn't have as much fun as I could have. So I recommend saving up some money to splurge and just have a good time! Especially if you're like me and like random gaming swag and other kinds of merchandise. Plus they have games there too, so you may want to ease off some of the sadness of the convention being over afterward with a new game or two. ;\

Something else in regards to money that I didn't see anyone else posting: I personly would reccomend brining CASH and not using a credit card. Of course you'll probably want to bring one as a back up, but some people may find themselves splurging a little too much with a credit card. If you bring a set amount of cash that you set ahead of time, you won't be putting yourself into debt or anything, and it's much easier to keep track of how much you've spent. =)

Friends:

I didn't bring any friends last time because I don't have many friends who play games, and the few friends I do have were busy with other trips and things. If you don't have anyone to bring, I personally wouldn't sweat it. I honestly kind of like being by myself, it just brings a level of freedom that I wouldn't have otherwise. I actually really enjoyed that aspect. =D

Of course, bringing friends if possible probably would be fun as well.

Man I can't wait for SGC! I'm going to PAX East as well, but I'm still more psyched for SCG 2010 than PAX, haha. Both should be very fun though.

I think PAX and SGC are two completely different kinds of conventions.  PAX has panels and console rooms, yes, but they're also almost more of a trade show than a celebration of fandom.  And so I think you end up in a completely different kind of atmosphere at the both of them.  I found SGC more fun than PAX. :D  Though, I did find PAX more INTERESTING than SGC.

The Penny Arcade Expo is an expo. ScrewAttack Gaming Convention is a convention.

It's an obvious statement really, but the two are very different thing; it's like you say MarzGurl, but the difference does start from the name =) Expos are always trade show events where the purpose is to sell, whilst conventions are always more community orientated.

You won't find a better deal on a hotel around the convention that's of such high quality. It's $99 a night regular at the Westin, but that's obviously less if you double up with someone.

EDIT: Looking back through the posts, I see that Marzgurl also addressed multiple SGC's. I don't think size will ever play an issue there. If we hold multiple events, then a good chunk of g1s will go to these newer ones and won't get to hang out with whoevers at the other one.

Yeah, see, if the con gets bigger, you just move to a different hotel.  All cons reach that point sometime.  Moving around the country, however, spreads you very thin, and actually doesn't give you a chance to grow.

If you don't have friends to bring, don't sweat it, you'll make new ones at sgc.

I went last year and everything went smoothly. Here are my recommendations in terms of planning:

Plan far Ahead:
You have 6-7 months to round up as many friends/family that you wish to bring(the more the merrier), so make sure to ask everyone as soon as possible to ensure the best chance of getting lots of people to join you. The sooner you figure things out the cheaper it will be for everyone.

Expenses/Budget:
Make sure to get an estimated total cost of everything: Badges, Hotel, Gas/Plane ticket (to and from), and food expenses. Getting this decided after you get some confirmed friends/family joining you is important, because the total price per person going will change as you get more/less people.

Deadlines:
Try to set a specific deadline in which everyone must for sure commit to going, and then set a deadline for everyone to have their badge and hotel payment in to whoever is paying for each.

As far as tips go when it comes to actually being at SGC:
-Bathe at least once a day.
-Bring extra money for buying things and just in case of emergencies.
-Get some sleep each night, because you will enjoy the whole experience much better. (I was intending on staying up the whole time, but found sleeping around 4 hours each night worked out really well and kept me feeling energetic while still catching all the fun as well)
-Make sure to get a schedule, because they're are some events that overlap thus you will have to manage what is more important to you.
-Bring deodorant, body spray, and some mints. The less you smell the better for everyone.
-Be nice to your fellow g1's.
-Participate as much as possible and have a good time.

Best way to enjoy these kinda things? Talk to people. If you don't talk to people, you won't have fun =)
