Response to Whitly’s theological/religious stuff in video games

By Ztifitz on August 8, 2009, 9:20 am

Hey there g1’s and people who’re not g1s, if you recall Whitly made an invitation to try and do this (if you don't check it out here), well I’ll give it a shot but I’m not going to focus on just one religion or mythology, I’ll just go ahead and put of all the things I can recall and that come to mind from any religion or mythology. One more thing: I don’t really have an extensive knowledge about any religion nor mythology so this, as I said, is from things I recall being vaguely or actually accurate. Hope you like this. First of all Mithos Yggdrassill from Tales of Symphonia This is really easy if you know a little bit of Nordic/Norse mythology where the tree Yggdrassill is the base of the nine worlds that exist in Norse mythology, some of them being on the tree's branches, others on the roots, and just one beneath the tree. The explanation is way more complicated but that’s basically what it is. Now we go with Siegfried/Nightmare from the Soul Calibur series Once again we go to Norse mythology with Siegfried being a hero who slayed some dragon(s) or something, I don’t really remember that in a really specific way. But he’s still a friend’s childhood hero so I had to include this guy…… I mean Siegfried from Norse mythology, not Nightmare. Lemuria from Golden Sun This is neither a playable character nor an enemy; this is a direct tribute to the mythical city of Atlantis from Greek mythology, not only that but the entrance is guarded by Poseidon. An utopia of Mercury adepts, people who can use water and ice alchemy (this are references to the game’s vocabulary so if you haven’t played it sorry :)) The Djinn from Golden Sun These are reference...Well... To genies from Arabian folklore, they keep the base of the Arabian folklore of their free will and that’s why they help Isaac and company on their quest to restore alchemy. Spawning from the Djinn in Golden Sun you can cast summons against your enemies, there is one which I’m not sure if it was Thor or Odin which being any one of those is still a reference to Norse mythology. Spells from Golden Sun This are mostly Isaac’s spells since I can’t find my Golden Sun The Lost Age but just with those you have Gaia, Mother Gaia and Ragnarok. The first two, since Isaac is aligned with Venus, are tribute to the Greek’s mother of everything Gaia, but not only that, there’s also the Gaia Blade which happens the best weapon in the game, at least that I have found in all my playtroughs. This is Grand Gaia, if I'm honest, I didn't even know that existed, I never got my characters to that high of a level I almost forgot, about Raganarok, that’s the name of the Norse mythology’s end of the world, which in the end gives connection to the belief that two persons populated the Earth. That's a Ragnarok attack... from Felix, the protagonist of Golden Sun The Lost Age Any Final Fantasy summon Seriously, they are all references to mythological creatures, all of them, so instead of listing them, if you have played a Final Fantasy game you know the mandatory ones Ifrit which represents a fire shape-shifting creature, usually into animals, Bahamut who is a fish that supports the Earth, from Arabian mythology, and Shiva, the supreme God of the Shaiva tradition of Hinduism. (I have never finished a Final Fantasy game so I don't really know that much, sorry) Ifrit, at least one of the many forms people have given to these creatures The Masamune from, basically, any RPG, but I’ll go with the one from Chrono Trigger because Frog wields it Credit for this goes for Dustin Newell This one’s a supposition of mine since, at least, the first sword to be called Masamune was in honor of some Japanese blacksmith of the same name...Last name... You get it. Now that I think about it... How can some Japanese blacksmith make a religious reference list... mmmmmm I guess you can count this in... Japanese folklore, yeah, Japanese folklore FTW Eternal Darkness’ allusion that you’re fighting against the Christian/Catholic God himself This is way too far fetched but it’s the conclusion I came to. All right here it goes: The Ancient you pick up at the beginning can be considered as the Father, Pious Augustus can be considered the Son, predicating the word of the Father to the people and the Holy Spirit, since it’s everywhere, can be considered all of the Ancient’s and Pious’ servants. I know this is a little crazy but it still makes a little sense and, still, it is what I do believe it represents….. The Father The Son The Holy Spirit So this concludes my list, hope you enjoyed it and I won't have internet for the weekend so I won't be able to answer comments, but still I'd like to know what people thought and I'll answer as soon as I can. See you around.

I wasn't aware of all these references, except the Final Fantasy one of course. Great job presenting them and everything as well.

Yeah That was one reason why Golden Sun was one of my favorite games, since all the cool references.

I still have not played Eternal Darkness, though I've been meaning to. But now I REALLY have to in order to see if I can come to the same conclusion you did.

If I do, then it will be one of the most mind boggling things I've seen in any form of entertainment media. And I thought Neon Genesis Evangelion was confusing.

Mostly because that game is as close as you can get to making a video game based on Lovecraft, and it just kicks ass.

But never really saw that type of an allusion, well it's hard to think straight while playing that game..WOOT ammo room..damnit, your doing WHAT to my memory card!!!!

edit: oops this was supposed to be a response to another person post about Eternal Darkness......

Someone took up my challenge and did a better job than I did-awesome! It's too bad I didn't get to see this earlier (it was my Sabbath,) but I'm glad that I started something special. Good job! Very deserving of a top-post!

Just a minior comment. Siegfried is the "Opera character", based on Sigurd Fåvnesbane, the slayer of the dragon Fåvne (hence his name, "Fåvnesbane"). The "story behind the story" of Sigurd Fåvnesbane is actually quite interesting, I encourage people to look it up.
