Thunderbird's Top 100 Video Game Songs (90-86)

By Thunderbird on August 25, 2009, 11:58 am

Hello everybody, Thunderbird here again for another installment of my Top 100 Video Game Songs! I've tried to write as much as I can about each game, but sometimes the music will speak for itself. Also, before I get into the list, I wanted to add a brief personal message. Today is my birthday! I just wanted to let people know that, because, I don't know, I guess I feel like I know a lot of people here, so I feel that it's necessary. Well, yeah, happy 17th to me!! And we're back to the list. If you missed entries 100-96, you can find it here: http://screwattack.com/node/27612 If you missed entries 95-91, you can find it here: http://screwattack.com/node/27851 So without any further rambling, let's get into it 90). Gulie’s Theme – Street Fighter 2 The first song from the Street Fighter library, Guile’s theme is one of the most memorable in the game. It starts off with a really cool and catchy riff, and while it doesn’t change much, it is a good, simple tune. Music is very important for fighting games in my opinion, because it sets the background for the action. Some people wouldn’t realize how important music is for fighters, but look at Marvel vs. Capcom 2. The most common complaint about that game is that the music doesn’t always fit the action. Imagine what people would be saying about Mvc2 if it had awesome music like this. But back on point, Guile’s theme is just cool. There isn’t anything else to be said about it. It’s almost like the character of Guile is just like his music; cool, simple, and to the point. I wouldn’t want it any other way. 89). Chun-Li’s Theme – Street Fighter 2 Hey, it’s not my fault that two street fighter 2 songs ended up being right in a row, that’s just how the list worked out, and it won’t be the last street fighter theme on this list. This has an entirely different sound than Guile’s theme, but it still serves the all-important purpose of providing a background to the fighting action. The reason why it’s in front of Guile’s theme? Well I think that the over the top coolness of Guile, both the theme and the character, get old kind of fast, while that doesn’t really happen with Chun-Li. There isn’t anything else to say, about this song, but I guess that’s what happens when I make a list about music. 8:8). Amazon Theme – Duck Tales Yes, yet another song out of Duck Tales. Well what can I say? The game has an incredible soundtrack! The Amazon theme is one of my favorites, and really has its own unique sound. Listening to it as I write this now, it’s actually pretty eerie, this theme has a lot of similarities to a song that may or may not show up later on the list. Can’t guess what it is? Well, it’s the Ice Climber music! Look, here’s that music. Yeah, the Ice Climber theme is slower, but it definitely has the same feel as the Amazon theme. Who knew? But anyway, the Amazon theme music has this really great sound, and it’s something that I can just whistle all day. And that’s enough reasoning for me to put it 88 on this list. 87). Dhalsim’s Theme – Street Fighter 2 I know, another street fighter song. Seriously, this is just how the list played out. But in a weird way, Dhalsim’s theme is the ultimate street fighter song. I feel that it combines the good aspects of both Guile’s Theme and Chun-Li’s theme into one giant awesome song. It has the interesting instruments and melodys of Chun-Li’s theme, but also the energy and style of Guile’s theme. And this is also the point on the list where I don’t always have to explain why entries are so low, that’s just how good this list is, certain songs are low just because every other song is better. However, I can’t say much more about Dhalsim’s theme, it’s just cool. 86). Dancing Mad – Final Fantasy VI Ahahahaha, I bet everyone is hating me now! Yes, the almost 20-minute long supposed epic, Dancing Mad, from the final battle with everyone’s favorite psychopathic clown, Kefka in Final Fantasy VI, is not insanely high on my list. I’m sorry, it’s awesome, but I’m not completely crazy over it, I truly think that all other 85 songs ahead of it are better. But why is it so low (yeah, I know I said I wouldn’t have to do this, but otherwise, I’ll get flamed)? Well, I think that in the song, the mood is definitely there, it’s very sinister and ominous, and certainly great boss music, but on a technical level, the song is very simple, and I think that there isn’t enough emotion like there is in other simple songs that are higher on the list to justify a higher position. Well there you have it, my reasoning for why Dancing Mad is only at 86 on my list. Let the flaming begin.

Dancing Mad at 86? No Metal Gear Solid? Waht a carppy list!!!

Anyway, nice job so far, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

I haven't reached the final battle in FFVI yet, but I gave Dancing Mad a listen. It was... acceptable, satisfactory, but nothing overwhelmingly brilliant.

First off, happy birthday Thunderbird! Best of wishes to you on this day, and let's hope no green-clad heroes comes to wreck your party at the Great Palace. ;\

And the list is shaping up nicely, I must say. Found it interesting that you put Dancing Mad so low, but at least it's better than NOT putting it on the list at all, amirite?

My favorite SF theme is Guile's theme, I just can't remember Dhalsim's theme as much as I do with Guile's, and to tell the truth, I can't find anything related to Guile's theme on Dhalsim's one.

Now, about Dancing Mad being "very simple"... ARE YOU SERIOUS??? I'm sorry, I don't want to flame you, but I just can't find what is so "simple" about that theme... It has awesome rhythm changes, a fantastic voice and orchestral counterpoint and a very complex harmony. A GREAT organ solo what resembles Bach's Tocata and Fugue. Want me to make a musical analysis? and then... the suspense and the frekin' rockin' final battle theme where I DARE you to keep the beat with your hand, I still can't even find out the time signature of that part. Havin said all of this... could you please explain us what is so simple about this theme? (specially when you say it as a "technical level").

Please don't take this as a flame comment, you're still making a great list!

See ya!
