Thunderbird's Top 100 Video Game Songs (100-96) It's finally here!

By Thunderbird on August 13, 2009, 9:31 pm

Hello everybody, it’s the moment that I’ve, and hopefully a few other people out there, been waiting for. The beginning of a brand new, Thunderbird Top 100! I am going to try to write a little bit more to try and keep up with the quality standard set by Jet Fire in his list. I won’t match it, because this time I am counting down the absolute best songs in video game history. Please understand if a few entries have not that much writing, but it’s hard to write about 100 songs, and the amount of writing will generally increase as the list progresses, because I will have more experiences and stories about the songs. I don’t want to sound cocky or anything, but I do believe that this is one exceptional list, because when I was looking through it, I saw many songs that could be argued as the greatest, or in the top 10 at least, very far from the top. But after all, it’s just my opinion. I’m using the same posting system as my previous top 100, although I think I’m going to space out postings a little bit more. I also had a few rules going into this list. 1). As in all my lists, I have to have played the game for it to be on the list. So sorry Roemer95, there will be no Metal Gear Solid music on this list; it’s just not going to happen. 2). So that the entire list didn’t become dominated with Mega Man, Earthbound, Final Fantasy, Zelda, and Pokemon music, I kept songs at a minimum of 6 songs per franchise. And before you get all crazy, all you readers should know that I’m counting Mario, Mario RPG, and Mario Spinoffs as three different franchises, due to the difference in music between those three, and because it’s my list, so I can do that if I want to. Those are all my rules for this list, but before I go, there are some people that I need to thank. First of all, I need to thank Jet Fire, for really inspiring my to do this second top 100 list. I also want to thank The Annoying, for sending me the remnants of his attempt at a top 100 songs list, it was a big help. And last, but definitely not least, I need to thank Elmo 3000, Whitly, Killroy, and PekoponTAS for constantly putting up with me complaining about this list and sending me suggestions during the whole process. That’s all the people on Screwattack that I want to thank, so with that, let’s get into Thunderbird’s Top 100 Video Game Songs of All Time! 100). Super Metroid Theme – Super Metroid It never fails, does it. Two top 100’s I’ve now made, and two controversial picks right off the bat. The main theme from Super Metroid is one of the creepiest songs I’ve ever heard in a game. You start off with a very ominous piano droning on, and then before you know it, that note just comes up and hits you right in the face. It’s hard to just start up the game immediately with this song playing. But some of you might be saying that this song is far too low on my list. After all, Screwattack named this song the fourth greatest video game theme ever! And yes, I did keep that in mind when making the order of the list, but I couldn’t put this song any higher than 100. Why? Because it’s just too underwhelming. The song just doesn’t have enough, well, song in it. It’s just a few notes on repeat! And when you take into account that a few people that helped me with this list thought it shouldn’t be on at all, I couldn’t justify a double-digit placement for the Super Metroid Theme. But this is a signal for how good this list is. A song that some people consider to be in the top 5 of all time is all the way at number 100! This isn’t the end of strange and surprising placements, for this list too. But I don’t want the readers to walk away from this thinking I don’t like this song, I really do. It provides an excellent atmosphere for the beginning of the game, giving it a great, desolate, lonely feeling. I really like this song, but it’s just not good enough to be any higher than number 100. But I can’t think of a much better way to start this list. 99). White Land I – F-Zero This frantic, fast-paced theme is just what one expects from F-Zero, a franchise which a friend of mine has said has the best music out of any franchise in gaming. This song has a great balance to it, switching off between the power chords and the more solo sounding music. It sounds like a real song, in a way, with the relation to the rhythm and the lead, and how they react with eachother. While this song is cool, I found it hard to put anything from F-Zero very high on this list, because while they sound good and all, I put more emphasis on emotion and tone and similar qualities, things that the higher up songs have more of. Also, I placed some importance on how “Listen-able” the songs are. Basically that means, even if it’s awesome in game, would I listen to this song even without the game? That’s a hard thing to say about this song. So while White Land 1 is a great song, and has a great rock sound to it, I can’t put it higher than here. 9:8). Corneria – Star Fox Yet another surprise, and fast paced pick at number 98, the Corneria Theme is quite possibly the most memorable piece of music from Star Fox. This is a similar song to White Land 1, so I won’t spend that much time discussing it. Basically, it’s the exact same situation; the song works great in the game, but not really that well out of it. The song has a bit more feeling that White Land, but not a whole lot more. Once again, please keep in mind that this doesn’t mean that I do not like this song, that’s just what happens when a top 100 gets made, some songs have to end up at the bottom. There are so many great songs in video game history than songs as awesome as the Corneria theme are forced to the bottom of this list. But getting back to the actual song, Corneria has this really cool main theme that just won’t get out of your head, and then follows up with this awesome synth buildup, which give the whole thing a weird 80’s techno-rock sound. But it somehow just works. Bottom line, Corneria is a really cool theme, and it does kind of hurt me to have it be this low. 97). African Mines – DuckTales This song is really cool. It’s not that musically impressive, emotionally expressive, or deep in any way, but it’s just really cool. This is just about as blippy as video game music can possibly get, and it sounds great. Sadly, this is a song that I can’t write much about, just because it’s one of those songs that I have no real story with, nothing to say about it, but it’s just a fun song that compliments the level nicely. Duck Tales as a game had some really good music, and don’t expect this to be the last from the game on this list. 96). Spring Theme – Harvest Moon 64 Ahh the spring theme from Harvest Moon 64. While the music isn’t very impressive, it fits the mood almost perfectly. If the object of the music is to help immerse the player in the game, than the 4 seasonal themes from Harvest Moon 64 complete their objective perfectly. How can you not think of fresh, new, spring beginnings when you hear this song? It’s nearly impossible. I have so many fond memories from this game that I couldn’t even go into them all. I’ve said it before, but this game was my childhood! I put so much time into this game you wouldn’t believe. There are definitely more songs from this game later on in the list, but let’s discuss this one in particular. This song has a slow feel, but not so slow that it’s boring; almost a ponderous feel. It does pick up into somewhat of a melody, but the almost sluggish feel of the song stays throughout its entirety. I’m not saying that’s bad, I’m just describing the song. I won’t say anymore, but this is easily one of the greatest songs

Nice list, but where's 'Take On Me' by A-ha?

Without that, this list is a lie!

Anyway, I liked the African Mines music, and was surprised to see Corneria so low. The Super Metroid theme is a tad overrated though, glad to see it in a low position.

Slow start, but a start nether the less. Although it was kind of a let down to see Corneria and White Land so low on the list. By the way, do you remember if it was me who recomended White Land, becasue I know I did recomend it to you:D

I'm glad that I provided a little bit of inspiration, and I'm really digging your new list so far. The ones that I will have to agree on are Corneria and White Land, as they both have fast paced tempos that can get my adrenaline pumping. Super Metroid and Harvest Moon 64's tunes are kind of ambient, which I'm not a huge fan of, but since I haven't played those games, I really can't experience what kind of mood that they set (ambience can work well, like Jolly Roger Bay in Mario 64, for example). As for DuckTales, it's a pretty quirky song, but I haven't played the game enough (only once when I was very young) to really remember any of the songs. I'm 99% sure that the Moon Theme is going to make it onto the list. Keep up the great work Thunderbird, and it's nice to see such detail describing the songs, especially when there are games that I haven't played on the list, which gives me more of an idea of understanding what the music represented.

My only complaint is that, well, I think that four songs per blog is a bit dainty.

I was hoping you'd get started posting this soon! I bet this will turn out to be something quite epic indeed. I think you're writing just the right amount for each tune for now. The music really speaks for itself if you don't have much to say, so don't force yourself you write too much here in the beginning. That's just my opinion obviously.

I'll look forward to every post! =D

Nice start to a list I'll certainly be keeping an eye on for later installments. I also like your rule about having only six songs per franchise on the list. I know there are some series out there that alone have 100 songs in their games worthy of being on a top 100 list.

Hahahaha. Dude, I regret not having my webcam recording my face when I saw Corneria at the 98th spot xD. I went like "Corneria at 98?! =O. Mom, where's my Dragunov sniper rifle?". This only shows how much fun I'm going to get while reading the entire list. I also got surprised for seeing Spring Theme so low on the list, since it was on your top 10 videogame soundtracks. It's understandable, since you analized the whole soundtrack in the top 10, not the song, but I was still surprised.

I'm glad you put Super Metroid's Theme so low on the list. It's perfect for setting the mood, but so as any song from the Resident Evil 1, 2 or 3 soundtracks. The only thing that makes it special is that it's from Super Metroid :/.

I remember Pekopon and Elmo saying that the other themes from Duck Tales were overshadowed by the Moon theme. They were completely right. I gotta play this game.

Judging by the songs you put here, I can only expect greatness from the rest of the top 100:D. The only bad thing is that, whenever I do a GameTunes, I'll start making descriptions for the songs, erase them and say "they are not as good as Thunderbird's" xD.

Well, I might do a top 100 someday, but I have lots of soundtracks to listen before I feel confident enough to make one. While that doesn't happen, I'll just entertain myself with yours:D. Great start, Thunderbird. I'm glad I was helpful, and if you need any help, I'm a PM away from you.
