Remastered Power Rangers = Fail?

By Super Luigi 64 on January 23, 2010, 11:43 pm

First of all, I STILL love Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. I loved it as a kid, and still bust out the old tapes when I need a good laugh and nostalgia trip.

So imagine how intrigued I was to learn that ABC in the US would be airing a remastered version of the classic show!

What we got was... interesting, to say the least.

Check out the classic opening (Youtube has embedding disabled for it)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_YgupUZNdw

Now check out the "New and Improved" Intro:

What the hell? It gets worse, g1's.

Check out some of the changes made to Episode One:"Day Of The Dumpster". Should be easy to see what's be altered....

How about Episode Two: "High Five"?

Sure, the picture looks better, BUT AT WHAT COST?

At least we get sweet new toys...

Thank God they didn't mess with the music.

maybe you all just need to quit whining? I grew up on this stuff, and yeah.. there are changes, but it's still the same show that it always was at heart.. if you want to to *****, ***** about steven and george who raped their own movies alot worse than this. Congrats, this is my first '1' rating.

Harsh,  you know it isn't the same show anymore, stuff like that takes away from what the show was and made it into a laughing stock

Boy, what an honor!

So you gave me a "1", because I expressed an opinion and a lot of people agreed with me? Or was it because I didn't, as you so eloquently put it, "***** about steven and george who raped their own movies alot worse than this"? You mean like everyone else already has since 1997?

Who pissed in your cornflakes, pal?

I actually have to agree with this

Despite the cosmetic changes it is still the same bad American teen-sitcom with stock-footage ripped from a old Japanese TV-show

How can you rape something that already was rape?
This way it is at least more obvious.

Maybe cringe my teeth for a few seconds, and then pretend it does not exist.

No, Super Sentai kicked arse!

Power Rangers simply took everything that was good about it, and added tons of ****ty filler material to it.

The same can be said for Voltron, but it's still considered a classic here in America. It's "our" version. It's what I grew up with and loved it. Hell I went as Tommy The Green Ranger for Halloween back in the day.

When has American never not "butchered" the source material from another country?? They had to localize stuff with the US language (and American actors) otherwise nobody would have watched it.

Maybe people wouldn't mind the "original" now with the whole manga and anime craze but you must admit in the 90's nobody would have gone for it.

Besides, you can find the originals on youtube and a power rangers fan site.

PS. Power Rangers was done better than the Dragon Ball Z US live action version.

Not all stuff is butchered by America. Just look at Baccano! or Desert Punk. Baccano's dub is fantastic, and the sub of Desert Punk is much dryer than it's funnier dub.

Here, here. MMPR is great for a laugh, but not much else...

The classic Japanese Super Sentai shows feel like watching some great B movies, but Power Rangers was more like a watered down, kiddy version of said B movies.

As far as I'm concerned, Zyuranger and Mighty Morphin are 2 different things. I never gage them in the same way.

Don't get me wrong, I love Zyuranger, but I never could be one of those Sentai snobs you hear around the internet. "Power Rangers is for kids, no one should ever watch it evar!!11onoone"

Plus Kimberly was hot!

Because it was a show made for kids. What else do you expect? Let give another example: TMNT. The original 80's cartoon was a big watered down version of the comics and is celebrated as one of the best cartoons of the 80's. Why is it that MMPR is treated different then Voltron or TMNT?

Who said I treated the 80's TMNT that much differently? The 80's TMNT is also great for a laugh (and for nostalgia purposes too, obviously).

Keep in mind that Super Sentai was also made for kids, too, but it's ultimately a better show. I was surprised at how, by the end of Choujin Sentai Jetman, I had come to really care deeply about the characters and their plights, both for the heroes and villains alike. Their inter-relationships were really fascinating, and it proved to me that you can have campy fun and have an interesting story at the same time.

At the end of MMPR season 1, all I had were the same ol' goofy teenage stereotypes fighting the same ol' non-threatening villain (the villains in Power Rangers can't even manage to kill a single civilian). As I said, that's great for a laugh, but I'd still rather be watching a good Super Sentai series.

I wasn't saying you directly treated TMNT any different. My point was simply that shows like Voltron and TMNT are almost exactly the same on the matter and yet are celebrate as something more then "just a laugh."

Super Sentai may have also been for kids but it was for Japanese kids. MMPR was made for American kids. Call it a bastardization all you want but that's what appealed to American youth at the time. I for one enjoyed and still do.

I enjoyed watching MMPR too, but as I said, it's just for laughs and for the nostalgia factor. I certainly wouldn't complain about these new edits to season 1, because the show was never genuinely that great to begin with. There's no doubt that their aim was merely to accentuate the camp factor of what was already a ridiculous show.

Now you got be at a wall. If I defend it anymore I'll sound like a fanboy. I'll hate myself later for that. But honestly, I really feel that it's better then the credit you give it. It sure as hell is better then what's on today for kids most the time.

It is what it is. It's cheesy, hilarious fun that holds a lot of nostalgia value for people like us who watched it as kids. Though it is enjoyable to watch now (especially with similarly aged friends), that's about all it is.

We can say that MMPR is a better show than what's on today for kids, but then again, we also grew up with MMPR. I myself also grew up with cheesy martial arts movies and giant monster flicks too, so my personal appeal to watching these tokusatsu shows is quite obvious. But I'm sure that there were people our age back then who looked at Power Rangers and said the exact same thing you're saying: "The stuff we used to watch as kids was better!"

lol. intentional?

Man, Power Rangers was awesome! I'm glad they're reshowing it for a new generation. I gotta admit, some of the flashy effects are kinda cool, the freeze framing kinda works, but maybe overdone... and it was a good idea to change some backgrounds and stuff from the old Japanese stock footage, like the time-warp space shuttle device thingy. But what's up with the Adam West Batman effects and that weird border around Bulk and Skull? A little too much "remastering" me thinks.

I welcome some of the changes but I agree with Ben that some things were overdone. I do like the new ending credits. I also forgot how lame a lot of the dialogue was... oh my ears! : / At least it is good nostalgia. The original was the best one : ) (I did watch and enjoy Turbo and In Space but I quit watching any Power Ranger shows after those two)

Yep. I have to say, I get more of a Comic Book feel from this now, and I agree with you, Shinkenger is definately something to check out. The fact that the villain not only drinks alcohol, but also only has a rickety wooden ship as his base (Albeit on Japan's version of the River Styx) meaning he's got no massive HQ, he has no throne or things like that. I've been watching it and enjoying it throughly for a while now.

Oh, and they have the first real crossover with Kamen Rider too.
