Five Unfairly Treated Current Gen Games

By SpecterM91 on February 8, 2010, 3:52 am

Now, first of all, I said I'd be holding off on new content until the site was fixed... I changed my mind because some people in the comments on the announcement I made apparently enjoy my pointless junk more than I thought, so I don't mind posting for those people alone, regardless of how many others read. So, to you guys, enjoy. This particular entry has a **** TON of content, so please spread this one around as much as you can so it can get some views. On to the list at hand...

I ranted a **** ton about people putting so much stock into reviews in an earlier blog. Now, here are some games that were either treated unfairly by reviewers, or by the gamers themselves. Now, these are my opinions, feel free to disagree and even post your own choices in the comments.

#5 - Bionic Commando

Ever since the NES days, I've loved Bionic Commando. The unique take on platforming, the awesome arm mechanics, the free flowing gameplay; it's all fantastic. When I heard there was gonna be a reboot, and the original was being remade as a tie in, I shat bricks. The remake was amazing, a perfect recreation of the original. It was well received by both gamers and reviewers.  The sequel, however... Not so much... The reviews were average, but some complaints were hilariously sad. People complained about the difficulty, the graphics, the linearity, the swing mechanics... Just about everything, really. My take on it?
The game wasn't hard. At all. It was much, much easier than the original. The main problem with the difficulty seemed to be fact that the city was covered in radiation. Huge, glowing, neon blue clouds of radiation were apparently hard to avoid for some people, and the fact that the game warned them a radioactive hazard logo and a Geiger counter blaring wasn't enough warning for these people... How is this a problem? Why is it so hard to avoid a freaking enormous cloud that you can see from miles away?
The graphics were fine, really. Nothing horrible, but nothing particularly grand, either. The character design for returning characters like Super Joe and Spencer himself were a little hard to adjust to, but that's more of a character design issue than a graphical problem. Granted, the environments are awfully bland, and there are some frame rate drops here and there, but nothing's really worth whining over.
As for the gameplay and linearity? I really don't see the problem. It controls like most third person shooters, and the swinging is simple and intuitive. Basically, if you've played any third person shooter released in the last ten years, as well as a few Spider-Man games, you're all set. That isn't to say it isn't without its problems, though. For some, the lack of a cover system may've been bothersome, and if you haven't gotten used to the swing mechanics midway through the game, you're pretty much boned, because you'll be doing a lot of precise moves, and that could really turn someone off the game. The linearity "issues," though? The game's linear, what's the big deal? It's a third person shooter, it doesn't have to have huge, sprawling areas to explore for hours. I don't seem to recall anyone complaining about linearity in Gears of War.
In the end, it's not a bad game by any means, and if you were a Bionic Commando fan in the past, there's no reason you won't enjoy this sequel. Why was it panned? No idea, but I know it didn't deserve it. The game dropped in price extremely quick, so if you're interested in trying it out yourself, you can get it for twenty bucks or less.

#4 - The Darkness

This one actually didn't get bad reviews at all, just average numbers, really. The problem here stems from the gamers. What problem, you ask? Well, the game was basically flat out ignored. Why? I have absolutely no idea, you just never hear about the game, and you really didn't back when it came out. I can't imagine why someone would pass on such a fantastic game.
The story follows a young Mafioso named Jackie Estacado. On his twenty first birthday, strange powers begin to manifest, and a garbled voice starts commanding him. It turns out, Jackie's bloodline is cursed by the Darkness, a parasitic being that grants its victim immense strength and supernatural powers, but eventually drives them to insanity. The story is based on a comic by the same name, but it does take liberties, for the better, in my opinion. Jackie is an extremely lovable character, the people he interacts with are fleshed out, and the Darkness' constant taunts and advice is chilling and tense. The story is, in my opinion, the main reason you should check this game out.
The graphics are gorgeous, if you ask me. People look brutally realistic, are animated very well, and have extremely emotive faces. The environments, though not as impressive as the character models, are still very well done. The game takes place in an open environment, which looks much better than you would expect for such a big map. Darkness obviously plays a large role in the game, so lighting is key, and if you ask me, it looks great. Corners are dark, alley ways are gloomy, and surfaces are perfectly reflective. While the environmental textures aren't amazing, the lighting really makes things look great.
The gameplay is kind of standard fair, really, but it's certainly not bad at all. It generally controls like a standard first person shooter. The unique aspects come into play with Jackie's Darkness based powers. For example, you can summon two sentient tentacles and use them to scout ahead in areas and break lights for a stealthy sneak attack, a "squad" in the form of several specialized Darklings, a Darkness tendril that can be used to quickly pop lights and throw objects, a portable black hole like weapon that can suck anything in, and two special guns that use dark energy for ammunition. These powers are unique, fun to play around with, and pretty well implemented... And, on top of that, you level them by feeding the hearts of your enemies to the two tentacles. That is awesome.
Why has the game been forgotten? Don't ask me, I've been playing consistently since I bought it, and I've loved every minute of it. This is a game that's destined to make it into the "Top Ten Unappreciated Classics" lists of the future, and it surely deserves it. If you're interested, this one can be gotten on the cheap, as well. For the record, it's from StarBreeze, the creators of the amazing Chronicles of Riddick games. A sequel may actually be in the works, but it definitely isn't from StarBreeze, so that has me a little wary.

#3 - Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard

Does, uh... Does that box art remind you of anything in particular? Did it get a laugh out of you? No? Then you're probably one of the people who passed on this one. This isn't an amazing game, I'll tell you that right now, but it's such a novel idea and it's just so damn entertaining. The game was met with decent to horrid review scores (With some being as low as a three out of ten), and many posters on GameFAQs claim that it's the worst game they've ever played, so I definitely say this one was treated unfairly.
Graphically, yes, the game looks... Eh... Not good by any means, that's for sure, but not nearly as bad as some people claim. (It's been compared to the PS2 a lot... What PS2 games the people saying this were playing, I don't know)
Where the game shines, graphically, in my opinion, is its homages to retro games. For example, the two dimensional enemies that look and sound like Wolfenstein 3D enemies, the 8-bit textures in some places, and thecharacter design on characters meant to parody characters like Master Chef and Mario. As a whole, though, the game is fairly mediocre from a graphical standpoint, I can understand completely why someone would be unsatisfied with the graphics.
The story? That's why we're here, folks. The game puts players in the boots of Matt Hazard, a gaming icon of the eighties and nineties. Matt was made famous for his hit titles like Matt Hazard 3D and Fistful of Hazard, but thanks to company whoring and his appearances in games like Hazard Karts (A play on Mario Kart featuring Captain Carpenter), and Soak 'Em (A water gun based play on SOCOM), he's fallen out of the public eye. Now, he's ready to make a comeback, but quickly learns that his newest game is really a trap to get rid of him and put new Schwarzenegger-esque hero Sting Sniperscope in the spotlight. Now Matt must fight through is game, taking out giant octopuses, JRPG heroes who speak only through text, and a crazy Russian general on his way to silence Sniperscope and find out who set him up. The voice acting is fantastic and brings the story and characters to life, and if you've been gaming for than a few years, you'll be tearing up, either through laughing at the hilarious Final Fantasy, Halo, Mario, and Wolfenstein jokes, or because of the tributes the game makes to classic gaming.
The gameplay, admittedly, is nothing special. It's a third person shooter wit a heavy emphasis on cover. It isn't bad by any means, much less bad enough to warrant a three out of ten. What I never understood, though, was the fact that this game is, apparently, a three, while Gears of War is a ten to most reviewers. The games play nearly identically to each other. I don't quite grasp the concept of two games playing nearly exactly the same, but one is nearly perfect to most people, while the other is deemed almost unplayable. I don't get it. If anything, though, the standard gameplay is made more fun by the unique weapons, such as the water pistols and super soakers from the aforementioned Soak 'Em.
I can see why people dislike this, to some extent. It's not a game for everyone, and I'll acknowledge that. But really? A three out of ten? People need to learn what a three out of ten really is. To say this game is that bad, is to say that it's only two points better than something like Ninjabread Man. It's treated unfairly solely because the ratings are unbelievably low. If you like gaming comedy, it's worth trying for yourself. Form your own opinions on this one.

#2 - Brutal Legend

This one is all about the gamers here. Bare in mind, I only visit one or two forums, so this hate may not be as widespread as it seems to me. The game received generally good reviews and was praised for its story, atmosphere, soundtrack, and interesting direction with the RTS genre. Select gamers, however, didn't give it such a warm welcome. Complaints were numerous and nonsensical the majority of the time, and the fact that people didn't even know what kind of game it was before they purchased it was downright sad.
The game's gorgeous, there's no other way to describe it. The world is open and huge, the wildflife is beautifully designed, the characters look great, and the weather cycle is very well done. More importantly, though, is the sound. The soundtrack is easily one of the best that a game has ever had, and that's coming from someone who really doesn't enjoy metal at all. The voice acting is, honestly, just about as close to perfect as you can get. Peppered with known voice actors, comedians, and rock icons, and topped off by Jack Black, Schafer's hilarious script is brought to life perfectly. But, really, no one had a complaint with the sound or visuals, so there's no reason to go on about it.
The story follows Eddie Riggs, a roadie for a god awful abomination known as Kabbage Boy. After saving the band's guitarist from a fall to his doom, Eddie is crushed by falling debris. When his blood drips onto his belt buckle, a massive metal beast, the fire beast Ormagöden, bursts from the stage, decimates the band, and sends Eddie back in time, to the age of metal. There, Eddie must liberate the humans from their demon overlords and lead them against the evil Tim Curry... I mean, lord Doviculus.
Here's where people start getting a little outraged. Why? Because they went into the game expecting a Zelda style adventure game. I have no idea why they think this, it's been advertised as an RTS. Outside of battle, Eddie can ride around the open world in his hot rod, the Deuce, and take side quests from characters spread out all over it. The side missions can involve anything from hunting certain animals, racing, or playing a turret shooter to hold off an oncoming hoard of enemies. There's some variety, and these side sections are pretty damn fun. The main gameplay, though, is a sort of hack and slash, RTS hybrid. You control Eddie and give your units commands, in order to protect your stage, attack your opponents', and capture fan geysers to summon more units. You can use guitar solos to buff your units, harm your enemies, or summon specific units into battle. Multiplayer uses this mode as its foundation, adding two factions alongside Eddies to It's a fairly deep system, and it's fun.
I know exactly why people hate on this one, and it's a sad excuse. They didn't know it was an RTS? They wanted an adventure game? Do some research before you drop sixty bucks on a game! That's just common sense! It's just plain unfair to call a game bad because you were too dense to learn anything about it. I apologize for the *****y attitude, it's just annoying, but not as annoying as the treatment of...

#1 - Sonic Unleashed

Good. God. Sonic Unleashed... Hell, Sonic in general... In my honest opinion, the only REALLY bad games in this series, are Sonic 3D blast, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic and the Black Knight, and Sonic '06. The other 3D Sonics? Not bad, at all. Some, Heroes in particular, are just plain mediocre, of course, but not really bad games. When you consider how many games are in this series, five bad games isn't really a big deal. Yet the gaming community seems to get off on flaming the living **** out of the series and its fans. Sonic Unleashed is the best example of this.
The graphics, in my opinion, are beautiful. Hell, a lot of looks like it's straight out of a Pixar movie. Sonic himself, as well as Amy, Eggman, and Tails, look better here than they ever have in previous 3D Sonic games, and the new human character designs look much more natural and don't clash as much when they're standing next to a giant, blue hedgehog. The environments are based on real world locations this time around, so expect an Africa themed world, an Egypt theme, a frozen tundra, so on and so forth. These places are very well designed, and are extremely detailed.
The story... Okay, do you really play Sonic for the story? Oh, fine, I'll talk about it... Eggman did something right for once. He's split the world apart to summon a destructive deity called Dark Gaia. Through doing so, he also blasts Sonic with dark energy, turning him into a Werehog. Now it's up to Sonic and an annoying little... Thing... Named Chip to save the world.
The gameplay is, obviously, where the game shines. Sonic's stages are amazing. In my opinion, they're the best 3D Sonic stages so far. Period. They allow you to reach dizzying speeds, which is easier here thanks to a Sonic Rush style boost button, but still lets you do some nicely done platforming. The set pieces are great, as well, my personal favorite being a bobsled ride across the back of a whale. There are side missions, as well, and trials you get from hot dog vendors involving ring collecting and time trials. The problem here, though, is the Werehog. He isn't bad, really, just not nearly as good as the daytime stages. His stages play a lot, and I mean A LOT, like God of War. Everything from the puzzles, the stretchy main attacks (in this case, Sonic's stretchy arms), down to the level up screen. This is where people start hating. Me? I don't get it. I mean, if you can put it with blatant **** like fishing, glitchy treasure hunting, racing, and half assed shooting stages, I'm sure you can handle a little GoW style fighting.
Overall? It's not a bad game, at all. Its day stages are some of Sonic's best, its non-Sonic stages are nowhere near as bad as some of the alternate gameplay styles in the earlier games, and the story isn't as hilariously serious as past games. Why is it so hated? I have no ******* idea. Gamers claim its the worst game on the 360, reviewers claim that it's worse than Sonic the Hedgehog '06... People are stupid, apparently. The real irony is the fact that the Wii and PS2 version, a completely inferior down port, is labeled a seven out of ten game, while the fantastic 360 and PS3 version is, apparently, a three... How is this fair? Hopefully people will stop being dumb ***** about Sonic when Sonic 4 comes out.

So, there you have it, five games that I believe are treated unfairly. Honestly, this stopped being a top five and ended up being five separate mini-reviews with some rant thrown in, so I hope people still like it. Like I said above, please post your personal opinions in the comments section and please tell me about some games that you feel were cheated or hated unfairly. Again, this one took a bit of work, so please spread this list around, if you don't mind. Thanks for reading, everyone, I hope this list entertained you.

Honestly, I liked the idea and the general gameplay, but the isometric killed it for me. It may've just been me, but the camera made platforming almost impossible. >.>

lol nowadays yeah, but to be honest, back in those primitive times, when I played the game I thought it looked amazing. Crazy how our perceptions change with technological advancements...

Because i went from MegaDrive to Playstation, i missed out on the Dreamcast titles and with the exception of the Advance series, Heroes was the first game I'd had the chance to play since Sonic and Knuckles. and aside from the occasional glitching through the floor, especially on loops, it was pretty enjoyable. I didn't mind Chaotix because i already knew them from the UK comic. Cream and Big suck ass still

Yeah, Cream and Big have always sucked, and always will. The Chaotix, though, are bad ass. I just wish they'd bring Mighty back. He wasn't technically a Chaotix, but he rocked. So you're saying you missed out on both Sonic Adventures? Give the Gamecube ports a try if you have a Wii or Gamecube laying around. It's hilarious how serious they get sometimes, but they're still really good.

You should absolutely check out Sonic Adventure 2: Battle. It's one of my favorite games ever, and it's tons of fun. In my opinion, it's 3D Sonic done right.

I have the Wii version of Sonic Unleashed and I've played the 360 version at a friends house. The main complaint most reviewers had was that they claimed the 360's werehog levels were virtually unplayable. They aren't that bad, but I found the Werehog levels in the Wii version to be much better (and also not as long) and the Day stages were just as good.

I think another reason the 360 got lower reviews was because of the boring hubworlds (which take about 10 seconds to get through on the Wii) and the rail shooting missions on the plane (not on the Wii).

I played through both versions side by side and found the Wii's Werehog stages much, much worse. If only for the controls. They really could've done something better with the motion controls. Also, I liked the hubs. It's another throwback to good 3D Sonic that people still ragged on despite liking it years earlier. They were just more lively than the Wii version's point and click hubs. The day stages in both were amazing, but the Wii's felt too much like a race track. Like, they felt too flat to me.

I just use the Gamecube controller, it makes the entire game a much better experience :). Of course, in Sonic Adventure, you could run at full speed through all the hubs and you never really had to talk to anyone. Correct me if I'm wrong  but you don't go very fast in the 360's hubs, right? The Wii's hubs you just click on something, speed through the text, and then you're playing the level. Short and sweet, no faffing around walking from place to place. I can understand the "race track" sort of feel with the Wii version, but the Wii version's day stages also flowed much better, i.e. you almost never have to stop running, and you'll very rarely die (except in Eggmanland. hoo boy.)

Ah, dammit! I honestly forgot you could use a Gamecube controller, I never gave that a shot. Sadly, my Wii's on the fritz at the moment, so I can't give it a try. :( Yeah, the hub controls in Unleashed were broken. Beyond all reason. But I just loved them, I can't quite put my finger on why, though. I dunno, I just mostly preferred the 360 version... But the Wii's final boss was much, MUCH better than the QTE smackdown that was the 360 version's. :P

I LOVE Brutal Legend.  The only part that I didn't really enjoy were the RTS parts - mainly since I've never really been good at them.  But after a few Stage battles, I started to get the hang of it and it wasn't so bad.

That one gripe is the only one I have with this game.  Everything else oozes awesomeness to me.  I really hope they come out with a sequel.

Unleashed was awesome! Definitely gets more hate than it deserves.

The day stages were easily a highlight of the Sonic franchise, and the Night stages are just a very average platformer/beat-em-up. They're not terrible, but the fact that they're placed next to the day stages make them look atrocious to some.

The only part that sucked was careful puzzle solving in the Temples with Sonic's controls. One wrong tap the joystick and that hedgehog flies down a bottomless pit. Ugh.
