Cultural Gap 2: Sex and Violence

By Se7enthMoon on October 31, 2008, 1:33 am

To relieve some of the tensions of my 1st entry of the cultural gap series http://screwattack.com/node/11517 , I thought about a pretty funny topic to talk about that was mentioned on hard news a while back. Today’s I’d like to point out our views on 2 taboos of videogames in the east (mainly Japan) and in the west (mostly America). (I’d talk about Europe too, but I don’t know anything about the gaming culture there to make any valid points so I’ll leave that out for the G1s to comment and discuss) First I would like to talk about us western gamers. We love violence. Mortal Kombat and Grand Theft Auto are probably some of our most cherished franchises that aren’t as popular in Japan. However, there is one thing that we don’t tolerate here and that is sex in videogames, a very popular genre in Japan. I don't understand why our violent titles don't do well over there while their own share of violence like Ninja Gaiden do really well. As for Japan goes, I’m sure some people have heard of a genre of games there called “Eroge (エロゲ)." It’s short for erotic games. While most are generic dating sims with voice-overed sex scenes in between, there are a few, mostly developed by a company called “illusion” which made games like Sexy Beach, Artificial Girl and Rapelay which are pretty much sex/rape simulation games. Those kinds of games will never be released in the U.S. It’s not like Japan doesn’t have its share of violent games: Ninja Gaiden, Biohazard/Resident Evil series, as well as many others. I’m not saying hey, let’s bring eroge’s here to the US! No, in fact, that would be terrible. It’ll just be more reasons for our politicians to ***** and whine about games. But I think it’s funny because if you look at it from a real-life perspective… Having sex is only a way of reproduction; it’s not a crime. But I’m pretty sure you’ll be pretty screwed if you’re caught ripping someone’s spine out or decapitating people like you do in Mortal Kombat. In other words, I think that violence is much worse than sex. But it is the cultural barriers that tell our society it is the other way around. ...Actually I take that back, it would be funny as hell to see what Jack Thompson wants to say about any of illusion's titles if they were brought overseas xD (wow I just noticed that I spelled cultural wrong on the title of my first blog... how embarassing)

It's rather like in Japan. Sex in Games (not actually sexgames, those exist here too but nobody actually cares)
is just not that of a bigger deal.Nobody here gave a rats ass about the ridicioulus Hot Coffe case or the infamous BMXXXX (you know what I mean), but Games like Manhunt get heavily censored and in some countrys ( mostly Germany:( )even get Forbidden , making it partially illegal to buy them.In Germany, Games or movies that are considered to violent either get changed (blood color changed to grey, enemies are turned in to Robots etc.)or get put on a list called the Index. When a game or a movie is on there you can't just go to a store and buy it. Sometimes a store can get it for you , but I mostly order Games and DVD's in Austria.

I think the main reason that violence is more ok in games than sex is because of the same reason that news broadcasts like to focus on violence and bad things - media likes to desensitize its viewers/players to violence - it makes it easier for someone who may one day get drafted into a war to kill the enemy without thinking twice.

While Japanese dating sims are twisted, so is punching/raping a puppy. Perhaps even more so :)

I've always wondered about what it is like in Europe. Thanks for the info :)
I'm surprised how you guys have such a huge censorship over violent games. I really did not expect that.

While the media generally depicts both to be just as bad... I mean you see some murder or some rape thing going on on TV here all the time (whether it'd be a soap opera or the news or whatever). But in the gaming culture sex is always worse than violence (in the US). I highly doubt it is because they want to send us to be killers in war though lol... If that's the case then pro-war politicians will favor games like no other.

It is interesting to see how here in Europe (well, Western Europe anyway) attitudes towards gaming tend to more closely mirror Japan than the US. The general rule of thumb tends to be: Violence bad, Sex okay. That said there is also a noticeable difference between continental Europe and the UK. An example of this is Manhunt 2. On the continent, most countries passed Manhunt 2 (the censored version) with an 18+ rating. Here in Britain, the BBFC initially refused to rate it, meaning that it was effectively banned. Of course the High Court has now ruled that it must be rated, so that particular saga is over. Bizarrely, however, the PEGI rating system gave Mass Effect an 18+ with a warning for violence (but not for sex), but the BBFC gave it a 12.

I live in Europe (Greece to be exact) and games aren't TERRIBLY popular. Aside from CounterStrike, Pro Evolution Soccer, maybe DotA, not many people play. But violence is a bigger deal than sex. Hot Coffee is barely mentioned around these parts. There WAS a stupid law about six years ago (Law 3037) that effectively banned all forms of videogames in Greece, but it was revoked. It was originally meant to counteract gambling but they took it too far:) Good post however. Totally good... *orders twisted porn games from Japan* Now leave me alone! I have... uhh... work yeah! Work!

There is 1 in six billion chances that you are me... Totally awesome right?
