Cultrual Gap 1: Eastern vs. Western Online Gamers
By Se7enthMoon on October 15, 2008, 4:07 am
My first blog post on ScrewAttack yay! I'm hoping to create a series of blogs talking about the cultrual differences between gamers in the east and west. Being an Asian-American gamer there are several instances I find interesting and some that really bothers me such as the topic I want to talk about today: Online behavior We live in a time when the internet can literally do everything, ranging from searching up info, watching videos and music, downloading pr0n, and one thing that we all love, being able to play games with anyone around the globe. For me, I play DOTA competitively, I'm also a fairly hardcore Final Fantasy XI player and I also enjoy various games over xbox live. However, as I broaden my horizens to playing with gamers overseas, I began to notice a big difference in our attitudes online. Generally speaking, I would say that more than 90% of Western gamers are extremely rude and obnoxious online while Japanese gamers tend to be much more polite and respectful. This might offend some of you.. You might read this and think to yourself.. "Hey I'm always respectful to other players" but of course there are always going to be exceptions to this. I've been playing online games ever since Starcraft, and then moved onto diablo2, counter-strike, and what I play today. Over these many years, I have grown accustomed to what online gamers here usually behave like. Usually when an underskilled player makes a mistake, people would be angry and insult him, calling him n00b and other stuff. To a typical gamer in the western region, this is common practice, you can hardly join any online game without hearing the word noob or any other kind of insult at least once. I played a few Halo3 games earlier today and almost every game I've joined had a fairly new player in it. And every one of those games another teammate will start throwing out F bombs and what not at the guy. The funny thing is the people who're making the insults are just as bad. But like I said, this is so common in the online gaming community here and why am I bringing this crap up? Well, a few years back when a local arcade near my house first got a King of Fighters 2003 machine I was stoked to play it, and even though I played KoF 2002 to death I was unfamiliar with the new system and at the arcades, there was a Japanese player kicking everybody's *****. Even though he probably only knew 2 words in English he was damn good in the game. I thought I'd give it a try with my best characters (Leona, Mai and Iori btw) I got obliterated. While other people at the arcades are like "wow this guy is so noob, he got pwned" the Japanese player slightly lowered his head and said "Thank you for the match." I was quite shocked that that happened. When DoA ultimate came out on xbox1 the first thing I did was sign up for xbox live and took it online (I was pretty decent). Of course, nothing really changes in the American community (I can't say much about the Europeans because I don't understand their language). But when I joined a Japanese game the players are usually much more respectful, every match ends up with an "otsukaresamade****a" from both sides, win or lose. One may ask, why would you even care about what somebody says on the internet? But I must say that because we are human beings, we should all treat each other with respect. I really think that USA is the greatest country in the world, but not every aspect of our culture is perfect, but at least in the gaming world, the Japanese culture is superior to ours and there is nothing wrong with learning from them. So the next time you sign on xbox live and a noob is in your team in CoD4 and you really have the urge to talk ****, just think about this for a minute.. Will talking **** to this kid make the game more or less fun for me? We're forgetting what games are truly about - fun! So why ruin someone else's as well as your own fun experience at playing the game? If you can look beyond that, I guarantee that playing online will be much more fun than calling everyone n00b.

1. So you are a Japanese/American gamer but where exactly do you live and have you lived in the East?
2. I played Final Fantasy 11 for awhile but could never get into it, however, the Japanese gamers in FF11 were extremely rude with the exception of a few I met. In FF11 some will refuse to group with you if you are not Japanese or cannot type full blown Japanese. I can type Japanese, as can my co-worker over here in Japan and we were both told very simply that even though we could type in Japanese, we were still foreigners and so they didn't want to risk having us around. それは本当に馬鹿らしい.
There are rude people in other Japanese games I play as well... just about as many as I have met while playing American games so I do not agree with the 90% comment. If anything, many Japanese are simply to shy to cause problems but just like in the states, the internet gives both the East and the West the ability to grow a pair of balls.
The Japanese are the masters it ettiquete thus the bow to you and everybody saying otsukaresamade****a (We worked hard or we all did our best, usually said at the end of work.) When I play American games though... I hear the same stuff. Have you never seen the expressions "gg, good game, good match, that was great, we got slaughtered" or so on said? I know I personally do on a fairly often basis.
Now I do agree that our online culture can be a bit dirty with trash talk, name calling and acting like an ass but that can happen everywhere. In the Westerns defense, Japan does not have nearly a fourth of the people playing online games as the West does. Most Japanese people play Ragnarok Online, FF11 or a variety of small and crappy cell games. They are now playing consoles online but there is no World of WarCraft here, I have never seen or met anybody who knew what StarCraft was or Counter Strike and so on.
Japan's culture is slowly adapting to Western styles and I believe that the day the Japanese manage to get out of their console addicition and begin hitting up computer gaming more you will see some of the same stuff you see in the States now.
I enjoyed reading your blog and I hope that my views and experiences have helped clear some things up.

Incidentally, what does otsukaresamade****a mean?

Nah I'm not referring to East/West in the US. Regarding battle.net, I think it depends on the default server location for certain countries, i know for singapore and malaysia they get less lag on uswest than useast.

Yes the vulgarity is bad but is it really bad enough to drive you away from the rest of the fun?

Regarding FFXI, I've talked to a few JP players and one of the sources of the animosity comes from is when the US players first joined. When FFXI was released in the states not only did the economy got messed up, but the new US players were very annoying in begging for help from Japanese veterans. Many were nice enough to help me at the time. I remember when I started, a random lv75 summoner helped me got all of the items for my subjob. Honestly at first I didn't understand why they would get mad when people ask for help until I was placed in the same shoes when the European group joined. There are times when I would be on the way to an endgame event and a random EU player will send me a message asking for help with some quest or whatever. Regarding parties and what not, JP players usually will not party with Americans is due to the language barrier. They would rather not play with people they cannnot chat with, it drives away the fun of the game. Perhaps US players are more ambitious about gaining levels while the JP players want to have fun while gaining levels, and they believe that they won't have that kind of experience being with a group they communicate with. The autotranslate in that game, although unique, it sucks.
Personally I play on Bnet and XBL a lot more than FFXI (i'm getting kind of bored of that game after 5+ years now). And I still strongly believe that the vast majority of American players are extremely vulgar. I think the meaning of "GG" has changed from "good game" to "lol you got pwned noob."
Like I said there are always exceptions on both sides. But in the end, this is just a generalization.
---
Anyway, pls don't think I hate Americans lol. I have more American friends on my XBL friend list than I do for players at other regions. It's just a fault in our gaming culture I saw which is pretty much ignored by most people. It's not anything TOO serious but I think us G1s should be aware of something like that.
