Keavy Rain overthinks the Game Overthinker

By Keavy_Rain on July 2, 2009, 10:41 am

Catchy title, huh? Spent all of five seconds on it and it shows!

Anyways, this is me analyzing the Overthinker's videos, which were submitted to the competition. What follows is my thoughts and feelings on the subject matter. Will it be kind? Probably not, because I'm an ******* and I feel if you're going to put yourself out there, you deserve a little roasting. Same applies to me, so feel free to roast me in the comments, dear Game Overthinker supporters. I can take criticism, just as long as you remember this: Attack the ideas, not the person.

His first video in the competition opens with a reference to a video made ten months prior about...racism. Dirty, dirty word right there. We're not supposed to hate people because of their race...we're supposed to hate them because they flew planes into our buildings, or because they don't agree with us, or because we don't like them, but NEVER because of their race. But...wait...why is it OK to hate people for all those other reasons but its not OK to hate them because we dislike their race?

I cannot wait to hear the thoughtful discussion on race in...wait, video games? How are video games racist? I guess there is a predominance of Caucasians in games, but are we really that insensitive to other races? Time to hit "Play" and see what's up.

Yes, that whole rant was me discussing the title and opening of the video. Betcha can't wait to read...Oh, Goddamnit...Get back here!

OK, so the old video was about the people pissed over Resident Evil 5 and the perception of it being about a White man killing poor Africans. To "appease" the people, Capcom added Sheva, an African woman as his sidekick. In addition, she gets an unlockable costume that's...OH DEAR LORD, SHIELD YOUR EYES! Lock the children in the basement, get my shotgun, because its...A LEOPARD BIKINI!!!

Oh, Capcom...How could you? Don't you know how horribly sensitive women are about their bodies? Don't you know that women worry about their weight and this could...wait...he's pissed because he thinks its racially insensitive? OK, but I still think that Sheva's Barbie-doll appearance will do more damage than her racially insensitive apparel.

Oh, I get it. There was an embargo placed on reviewers in relation to this costume and a level in the game where you fight African zombies in grass skirts who throw spears. Who said this embargo existed? A British journalist. Could I have a name of the person or, possibly, the name of the periodical or website where this was mentioned? No? OK, cool. I'm on the internet and...*Goes to Google*

FFFFFUUUUU...WHY THE ******* **** ARE THERE SO MANY ******* BRITISH JOURNALISTS!?! No, wait. WHY THE **** CAN'T HE CITE SOURCES FOR THIS ****!?! Much better, since it deals with the real issue here. I want to read this article discussing the embargo, since it apparently ties into the discussion, but I can't because "British journalist Resident Evil 5 Embargo" resides on the border between "Pretty ******* vague" and "Overloads a search engine." Wait...*Looks at time on video* 1:36? You mean, I got another half hour of this ****? FFFFFUUUUU...

OK, so now the discussion is about people...defending...Capcom? Who in their right mind felt Capcom needed defending from people clearly upset over an issue they feel passionate about? Capcom is not a child being threatened by schoolyard bullies. They're a large company being called on by people who feel the game they are making is insensitive. No one said you had to defend them, least of all Capcom. They don't ******* owe you.

"The cause of gaming being taken seriously has been set back?" Is he serious? Who the **** takes gaming seriously? I sure as hell don't take gaming seriously. I view it as entertainment and accept that it is a way to fill the time between sleep, work, and sex until I die.

The problem isn't with racism, its much worse? Oh, God...THE CHIPMUNK! He's right, it is much worse. Now we're discussing Judy Blume and coming-of-age books from the 70's and 80's. Oh, wait...he's actually going somewhere with this. Settle in folks, we're taking the scenic route to the ******* point.

Ohh, stick figures...Oh, no...Please, no...I really didn't need that and I think I'm the one in need of an apology from Game Overthinker on this one.

So this book is about a white kid who can't understand why his diverse ethnic friends are dressing up for Halloween? Holy ******* ****, was the kid from this book born and raised in the Nazi holy land? I was a kid, I had racially diverse friends, and I never saw them as different from myself. I knew they were different, much in the way girls differ from boys, but I never questioned their choice to dress up for Halloween...except for that one time Charles, my black friend, wore a white sheet and said he was a ghost. For those unaware, that's part of the reasoning behind the Ku Klux Klan's decision to wear white sheets...because they wanted the people they were terrorizing to believe they were the ghosts of Confederate soldiers. Don't believe me? Here's a direct quote from this Wikipedia article: The Ku Klux Klan night riders "sometimes claimed to be ghosts of Confederate soldiers so, as they claimed, to frighten superstitious blacks. Few freedmen took such nonsense seriously."

See, unlike Game Overthinker I provide you with information AND back it up with a source! Its remarkably easy to do, after all.

Holy ******* ****...he not only agrees with the sentiment of the book, but believes that white people actually THINK that way and its a valid excuse for racially insensitive behavior? I fail to see it, but OK...maybe its me...maybe I'm different...

OK, so now he's defending it by pointing out that "The New Avengers" features a group of white superheroes in fantastic costumes and...a black guy. I think the "Black guy" is the only one of them with any real sense, common and otherwise. Furthermore, he's one mother******* badass mother******, assuming he's using his real name and has no powers. Luke Cage sounds like a pretty average name to me, so it must be real. Plus, he has a handgun! No ridiculous costume, no "Secret identity," and is armed with a handgun. No offense to the other characters, but he's the only one of the bunch who would legitimately scare the **** out of me, and that's not because "he's black." Its because he doesn't need super powers, a secret identity, or a costume to hang out with super heroes. He has clearly and routinely ****** up people's **** to such a severe degree that a group of super heroes decided it would be best to befriend him. Well, that or he's there because of Affirmative Action. Either way, I'm not ******* with a guy that fearless.

Oh, ****...The squirrel...save me, black guy! Use your 9mm Glock super powers to save me!!!

OK, so now we're talking about Japan. For those unaware, they're pretty closed off to the rest of the world. I wonder why they'd want to close themselves off from...oh, right...the nuclear bombs. Yeah, I don't blame you, Japan. That was a totally dick move on our part and we deserve the silent treatment. Hopefully someday you'll accept our invitation to come on the Dr. Phil show so we can work out our issues.

No, apparently they're obsessed with the Western world and have been so for some time. I mean, he's pointing out that Anime and Manga characters are white. Sailor Moon, Astro Boy, Speed Racer...or could it be that he PERCEIVES them as white out of a desire to prove a point? The characters in Japanese Anime and Manga seem to have "Japanese" names, after all. Remember Cardcaptor Sakura? Sakura is Japanese for "Cherry Blossom," so if she's white why is her name Sakura and not, say...Sarah?

OK, so at 6:31 he's getting to the ******* point. So, what was all that **** PRIOR to 6:31? Goddamnit...

Oh, so apparently the point is that white people are always portrayed as the "Good guy" and everyone else is evil or a sidekick. Oh, and no one wants to play as a "black" version of an established character. Well, duh. Even Wario and Waluigi are pretty ******* bland.

No, the point is that game developers may want to make racially diverse characters but cannot because white guys have disposable income, therefore dictate popular culture. So, did he fall asleep during the 1990's when Gangsta Rap took over? "Oh, no, you're wrong Keavy. White guys bought Gangsta Rap." But...the...****. You got me there.

Squirrel is back, claiming that Nicole Kidman is "hot." If "hot" is now the new slang term for "Ugly" then I would agree, but if "hot" refers to someone who is attractive...he is SO ******* wrong.

So, getting back to the point(?) the only way to sell a game is to make the hero an identifiable white male, an older and tougher identifiable white male, or the masturbation fantasy of a white male. To back this up, he points to film. In "film" the black audience was underserved to the point where they accepted Tyler Perry. I think he misunderstands modern Black culture, but I'm not going off track for this one. Long story short, I believe black people love Tyler Perry for the same reason white people love Married...With Children: Its a parody of what they perceive to be their real world.

30 seconds left but...ah, **** it. Let's move on.

"Reality sucks?" Yeah, tell me something I don't know. We're in a recession with an incredibly high jobless rate, few open positions, and we're experiencing deflation. Yes, deflation. We know how to handle inflation, but deflation? Yeah, we're as lost on that one as a dad in a station wagon on vacation who refuses to read a map or stop for directions. Reality sucks and...oh, **** me. That goddamn squirrel is back and he's talking about a movie no one gives a flying **** about. KILL IT! KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!

Excuse me...*Grabs a fifth of Jack* OK, proceed with the video.

Ohh, its not about a ****ty movie. Its about graphics in video games. Speaking of which, when are we going to see modern renditions of those "Sex" games from the Atari days? Thought "Custer's Revenge" was offensive when rendered in crude, oversized pixels? Just wait 'till you see it in 1080p running at 60 frames per second, taking full advantage of the power of modern video game consoles. "****storm" isn't a powerful enough word to surmise what would happen in that situation. See, kids...sometimes bad graphics are a GOOD thing. Also, if Game Overthinker can go off on tangents, then I can as well. If its good enough for him, its good enough for me!

So apparently in the 32 and 64 bit era we all decided "Realism" was the new standard. *Ahem* Excuse me, Game Overthinker...you're at least a generation too early when it comes to that line of thinking. Go back and look at the games created in that generation. THEY DON'T ******* LOOK REAL! In all honesty, even the HD age is struggling to achieve realism. The games look better, but they're nowhere near realism. In fact, we may not see "Realism" achieved in our lifetime, but not for a lack of trying. The problem is the game console is not just rendering graphics; its also rendering damage done to characters, physics, inventory...there's a lot of **** going on behind the scenes in a game and when developers aim for "Realism" other things have to take a hit. Prime example? Mass Effect. Looks ******* great, but ever actually tried to play that game? Pop-in like crazy, textures take up to 30 seconds to load, loading all over the place, graphic engine struggles to achieve 30 frames a second at 720p on Xbox 360...Until processors reach the multi-core Terahertz range I don't think we'll see the level of detail you're *****ing about due to the concessions that have to be made to obtain a working game.

Wait...EVERYONE went for realism? Really? Are you the Game Overthinker or the Game Overexaggerator? A good number of games have been released in every generation with varying styles. Remember Blue Dragon? Sly Cooper? Rock Band? Those games use cartoon-like graphics. Aside from games that are based on real events, like Call of Duty, or games that take place in real environments, like sports titles, I can't think of very many games that favor realism to a fault.

OK, so here's the issue: He doesn't like realism because he doesn't like the real world. Makes sense, really. I don't like Taco Bell because I get a bad case of Montezuma's Revenge just by driving past the damn place, but...I have no idea where I'm going with this. Basically, I don't like all games but I recognize that there are people who enjoy certain genres and its not my place to impose my feelings on those individuals. I do wonder if his hatred of the real world is tied to any sort of social disorder, though.

3:10 and he's getting to the point? I feel a sense of joy and despair at once. I will call this feeling Joypair. Joy,because the time I have to deal with build-up has been reduced and despair because...I got to listen to eight minutes of him *****ing about the ******* point. The ******* point is...real games take him out of the game because they look real, but aren't.

I disagree, but will continue to listen simply because my options are this or play Fallout 3 for the fiftieth time. Don't get me wrong, I still love Fallout 3, but this gets me attention.

So, back to Game Overthinker. Realism is bad because of the uncanny valley. The more real it looks, the more frustrating it is when the game fails to follow logic. OK...

He then goes on for far too long about a ******* door and a red key. See, for me, I recognize that it IS A ******* GAME and will play by its rules. I do not waste my time trying to open a door with various objects if the solution is presented to me, as it is in his example. Without said solution presented, I am open to experimentation to a point. I do not spend ******* hours whining about how a video game door fails to obey the laws of reality since ITS A ******* VIDEO GAME DOOR.

He then goes on about how he would escape from the room, if it were real, and he had those items from the game. It makes sense in reality, but ITS A ******* GAME!

SERENITY NOW!!!

**** me...he actually THINKS this way? He actually wants realistic-looking games to behave realistically...OK...Let's think about it for a second. Take, for example, a first-person shooter game. You're clearing a building and, because Game Overthinker got his way, every room in the building behaves like it would in the real world. Now, let's say said building is a hotel. Gonna take a while to clear that hotel and move on, right? Yeah, but just wait. The hotel is in Las Vegas and, thanks to "Realism" its an accurate model of Las Vegas and the person you're after is in Las Vegas. So you've gone from a simple game of finding one bad guy in a linear game to having to ******* clear an entire ******* city comprised of billions of square feet of space. Realistic enough for you now, Game Overthinker?

To me, that sounds like the exact opposite of fun. Granted, I like Fallout 3, which is a game that takes place in a sprawling landscape. Thing is, not every building is fully rendered, there are parts of buildings, whole buildings, and even parts of the landscape cut off from me. Why? Because if they weren't the game's designers would never finish the ******* game, it'd take 2-3 dual-layer Blu-Ray's to hold the ******* thing, and most players wouldn't finish it due to all the ******* ground they'd have to cover.

My point is that while he hates the uncanny valley he should at least admit that it may be a necessary evil in game design and something he'll have to learn to accept if he wants to play games that go for realism. I'd rather have a realistic-looking and linear game than a game without borders and a fully-realized city I will never have time to fully explore.

Almost four minutes left on this video, and...**** it. Let's see the next one.

Video game violence. I'm a minute in and...**** it. I've had enough of this ****. I can already tell you what the video will be: 11 minutes of him talking about video game violence, when he's not going off on a tangent about something else.

Here's the thing: There are people who will take video game violence into the real world. Don't believe me? Think about video game violence like pornography.

Early on in your life, you didn't need much to get off. An R-Rated movie or Skinemax flick was all you needed. Eventually, that got boring so you moved on to pornography. Usual stuff, boy-girl, girl-girl. After a while of that, you got bored again. Then...you move on to the crazy, fetishist stuff.

Granted, this is not true for all of us. Most of us are totally cool with normal porn. For those this is true for, and you are a portion of the population, you are the same as the kids who shot up Columbine. They used video games as an escape mechanism. They never learned proper coping skills and thus never learned how to properly deal with bullying. Instead, they looked towards violent media to fulfill their fantasies. One day, they either lost their grip with reality, their fantasies no longer fulfilled them, or they just decided to shoot up the school. Regardless of why, they did make the transition and did kill a bunch of people. This cannot be disputed or denied.

As for if video games are to blame, they may be partially to blame, but saying they are the sole cause is simply stupid. These kids clearly have underlying issues, as do most people. We cope with them as best we can and will seek aid from professionals.

I think we, as gamers, need to have an open and frank dialog with those we view as "The enemy." We need to sit down with them and respectfully listen to their viewpoint, offer our counterpoint, and listen to their rebuttal. In the end, it does not matter who "wins" because its not about winning. Its about expressing ideas and letting them know our viewpoint in a calm and respectful manner. Hopefully they'll see that we're not bad people and we'll see that they're not bad, either. We just have opposing viewpoints. Maybe we'll even reach a point where we can agree upon solutions that satisfy us both.

So, after...16 minutes of Game Overthinker I can safely say that he needs to work a bit more on his scripting. He's all over the ******* place! He's hard to follow, never cites his sources, he exaggerates way too much, and seems to think that he's right all the time.

I got lost too when he said people got offended because of the leopard bikini. I couldn't understand how it could be racially offensive. Since I'm not African, I left it alone. Maybe it could be offensive there. Now that you said there is an embargo, it makes a little more sense, but I still can't understand the racism in there. African zombies in grass skirts? Is that offensive? I believe the virus or parasite or whatever (I didn't play RE5) choose all his...(search in the dictionary...) hosts equally. So, I expected villager zombies, red cross zombies (which reminded me of nurses of silent hill) and tribe zombies with grass skirts that throws spears. As long Capcom isn't favoring any African tribe in the real world.

About videogame violence, I don't think he's wrong, neither you. You are right on saying that there are people tat make the transition of videogame violence to real life violence, but they're 1 in 1 billion and probably have issues, like you said. However, you can't punish the entire gaming community because of this, we can't let the media always talk **** about gamers. I believe we have to change this scenario. I totally agree with your... second last paragraph (I don't know the name for second last in English and I don't search in the dictionary again) and I hope the debate with Jack Thompson at SGC goes this way.

In the end, I agree with you that Luke Cage looks pretty badass, that squirrel must die and Nicole Kidman isn't hot by any means (maybe beautiful. Hot are the girls I see in rap videoclips, girls from the beach and some girls from the university).

Until the part where you blatantly said you stoped watching, you can't comment on something you didn't watch...
Anway, those are some good points, but:
1- what bothered him most in Sheva's alternate costume was the tattoos, because they were so tribal, but I agree that racism will only exist as long as people perceive it. Once people no longer notice it, then we will know it no longer exists

2- You have to admit most game DO feature white males as the lead characters, that's not opinion, that's fact :P

3- (the chipmunk is there so he can say stuff within the youtube 10 minute limits "vanishes into the shadows for blasphemy")

4- Yeah, the realism one isn't my favorite one of his, its always a 50-50 situation for me, like the "parcour" mechanic in inFamous, its annoying that you latch on to everything, but it would be worse if it didn't exist at all. What I am saying is that it has advantages and disadvantages, for once, it IS quite idiotic not to be able to climb a small fence but be able to jump over a brick wall :P then again, it keeps the game on a linear path, and today's technology doesn't allow for such expansive spaces.

5- I highly recommend watching the violence episode, he kinda says what you say at the end of your blog, and presents some interesting ideas, although he does come off as a bit "preachy", but I don't mind, has he some very insightful thoughts.

6-You should check out his other episodes on youtube, they're pretty cool, unless you REALLY hate his stuff, then you might want to stay away, he likes to ralk a lot, heck, he IS the Game OVERthinker, not the Game Thinker XD

7-I never really lost myself, I was able to follow most of his logic, and I like how he uses comics and movies to demonstrate what could also apply to video games, and I wouldn't follow the sources even if he told me what they were, he already tells me what it says anyway :/ and he does exaggerate some times, but it is only to try to get his point across, look at American presidents, most feel the need to put everything in black or white (good or evil, right or wrong, etc...) for people to understand XD and yes, he does come off a bit smug some times, but he earned by doing what many have failed to do: project a intelligent, rational representation of the gamer mind to a larger audience, and although it IS a bit rough around the edges, I commend him for his effort :)

8- Great post, very thought provoking (obviously:D), even if a bit flammy :P and please don't be offended by my post, I guarantee it as not my intention :) I hope my post was able to make you see the Game OverThinker in a new light, like you have to me, and although I'm no fanboy, I really do respect his work, I find him akin to Elmo's blogs in a fashion, dealing with Gaming issues, although its not nearly as entertaining or of the same quality :P

again, great work Keavy Rai...wait a minu...OmG mOd!!1! U R THE N00BZ!!1!!! i BT UL TOP PST THIX UR SLFZ!!!11! >:( (no, really, you should top post this, it deserves it:D) GO AWY U FKN N00000B!!!11!! (not really, you're a good part of this community) U ND UR FANCI RIGHTING!!1! AL INTELIGANLYT R U? LOLOLOLOLOLOL DON MaKE ME LOL (I already did lol... epic fail XD)

ok, I'll stop now...

Wow, it's just... a lot of stuff to comment on. Well I only watched the second video that OverThinker submitted, and while I liked it, it's fair to say that this realism rant went TOO ******* FAR. I mean, does going around shooting a bunch of terrorist sounds real to you? That's definitely something that doesn't happen a lot to me, you know. And plus, even if the game fails to be realistic at some simple spots, that's because they're GAMES. They always will have limitations. Deal with it. Some conventions of game design will never die. Even with these flaws, those games work. I have a good time playing those, and I won't deny it just for the sake of sounding intellectual or some **** like that. You could make jokes about how ironic it is to have a rocket launcher and not be able to blast a wooden door with it. But when you get angry because of it, well, then maybe you should consider taking a break from playing games. Once again, they're VIDEO GAMES. You supposed to have fun with those. If you can't accept some limitations then maybe it isn't your thing. Maybe you should buy a real RPG, point at a door in your home, shoot and see what happens. I don't know, dude. Just try to enjoy the damn game for what it for once. Geez.

Oh, and racial thing. I can't take it anymore. ANYTHING is considered racism, specially in the US. People make such a taboo out of it that they end up being racist and don't even realize it. It's like we should walk around with some kind of manual of how to treat black people without being offensive in case you come across one of them. Shouldn't we treat other people equally? Not to mention the word race is awfully inaccurate. Black or white, we all belong to the same race. The human race. Duh. I mean, we're always killing white people. Why isn't racist too? Isn't killing russians or germans in games offensive to them? No, because they're all white... right? No comments. No one cared about going to South America in Uncharted and kill people from all kinds of Latin American etnies with their generic, american action hero. That's fine to me because I don't take these things as offensive to anyone. But people can't even be moralists right. They're arguments are just so dumb.

And Keavy, you deserve an award for treating the violence issue with such sensibility and reason. Those guys never had anyone listening to them. They're always the bad guys. But no one ever cared to listen what they were feeling. If someone did that, maybe those lives wouldn't be lost in Columbine.

Great post. It was hones and made feel relieved to know there's still reasonable people on the internet.

Being a blogger, I've noticed that there are two types of those of us who blog. There are those of us who get it, and can bring a point intelligently, and there are those who don't get it, and try to be intelligent, only to end up looking like an angry 13 year old that somehow has both a bad temper and good grammar.

Keavvy Rain is the latter. This entire blog was, for lack of a better term, stupid. There's not an intelligent line in the entire blog. You could have simply had a blog that said the below sentence, and have been fine:

"My name is Keavvy Rain. I'm not an intelligent person, and I don't like Game Overhtinker."

Overthinker for the Win!

Aw Keavy, I'm sorry you feel the way you do. About backing things up with sources, he does provide links with many of his other videos. Why he didn't do it in that particular video you watched, maybe he's grown lazy?

I was so impressed by the Overthinker that I sought out his other videos. He posts links, but with Youtube's 10 minute limit it is probably difficult to fit so much over thinking into one video. Under think it and maybe there will be enough time.

Wario and Waluigi might be bland... but their gimmick is "they're evil." Maybe they're just jealous of Mario that they need to rain on his parade? Wait rain... was that a pun on what you're doing to the over thinker?

Okay, about a week ago, I wrote a blog about the MyVidsDon'tSuck Finals, where I gave some criticisms over the Game Overthinker's videos, albeit not as harsh as Keavy here. When I sent my blog to one of the moderators, he said that the blog was certainly good enough for a top post, but he wouldn't top post it due to the "controversial" nature of the contest, and he wanted to avoid any more major flamewars. Okay, that's acceptable, I can certainly understand that.

Yet, a blog post that's even more harsher than mine, and probably has a higher chance of a flamewar happening gets a top post while the contest is still technically going on?

Seriously, what the hell?

Also, I must add that the mod I sent my blog to DID give me some g1 points for my trouble. The thing is, I don't write blogs for the points. I write blogs because I want people to actually read it, and maybe even discuss it a little bit. Y'know, make them think and all that. Also, I'm not saying that Keavy's blog is bad, far from it. I found this to be a great read. I'm just curious over why his blog got top posted and not mine. If it's because the quality of my blog was lackluster in quality, then fine, I can accept that. But since a moderator already stated that my blog was top post worthy... then why? Why, I ask?

I'm sorry for this mini-rant, I just needed to let this off my chest, that's all.

Also, keep up the good work, Keavy!
