Top 4 Most Depressing "Happy Endings" In Video Game History

By Flashpenny on September 16, 2009, 5:16 pm

You read the title right, we pretty much demand happy endings. But once in a while video game makers sneak one by that once you give it a little thought it's pretty damn depressing. I'm not talking about endings like Kingdom Hearts or Portal where it's supposed to be sad, I'm talking about being generally depressing. Also before any wise-***** point this out, yes I did get the idea from Cracked.com, only I'm orienting it for games. 4. Sly 2: Band of Thieves The "Happy Ending": After Clockwerk is blown up with a bomb by Bentley his parts are scattered everywhere. Carmelita then crushes the Hate Chip underfoot causing the ancient owl to deteoriate thus ending the threat of Clockwerk... forever. Wait A Minute...: Does anyone think it's a bit odd that Clockwerk put his entire mortality on the relience of that one chip? A chip that could easily be destroyed in a firefight with a SWAT team? I know this guy was a total psychopath, but he's the kind like Majora... scheming, cold, focused and very smart. I dunno about you but Clockwerk seems a bit too smart to just give his mortality on something that could easily be crushed underfoot. 3. Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess The "Happy Ending": Ganondorf is slain and the Twilight Realm's threat to Hyrule is extinguished. After saying good-bye to Midna (forever) Link returns home to his loving village. Wait A Minute...: There's a reason why in most Zelda games Link is cast out from society in one way or another (e.g. in OoT he goes looking for Navi, in WW he goes sailing for another Hyrule etc. etc.). I dunno about you but personally I find it hard to believe that someone can kill legions of living beings and then at the end go home and become a perfectly happy, mentally stable human being. In fact considering all those moves that can kill someone with one strike Link learned in Twilight Princess, it's obvious that rather than putting up with Bo's crap he'll probably just cut his boss' head off next time he gets a pay deduction. Also I don't think Ganondorf really had death coming to him. 2. Kingdom Hearts II The "Happy Ending": Aw come on, admit it, you shed a tear at how happy this is (note: this only qualifies if you saw it after beating the whole trilogy, otherwise the feeling's kinda lost). Sora and Riku return home to a happily ever after with Kairi on their home. Wait A Minute...: The exact same problem mentioned above: do you think Sora could return home to his parents and do chores after killing legions of Heartless and Nobodies? I don't think so. Hell next time his dad tells him to clean his room he'll problem just yank the Keyblade out and commit patricide. It's worst since Sora's a kid so that makes it worse than TP in that way. No really, this is downright wrong. But what could be more depressing? Well here goes... 1. Super Mario Galaxy The "Happy Ending": Mario defeats Bowser and saves Peach. Unfortunately Bowser's meddling at the Center of the Universe causes reality to constrict upon itself into a hellish vortex destroying everything. Rosalina however saves everything and returns Mario and Peach back to their home planet just in time for the Star Festival. Bowser stirs a short while over by and Mario then thanks the player for playing. Wait A Minute...: Bowser was right there! First off how is he and his son even alive? Last time I checked he got tossed into lava and his son was trapped on a ship that got blown up by lava geysers. Also there's a reason why a villain is only left alive if he's either a. detained or b. repented. Bowser did neither. He was just waking up. So what's to stop him from cutting Mario in half and wreaking havoc again? And also there's the fact that Rosalina brought everyone back from the dead. Hey, wasn't it said in the Bible that the world would end when the dead came back from the grave? Yeah so basically she's ******* with God here. It's only a mater of time before Jesus hunts her down and kicks her ass. Hey maybe that'll be the plot of Super Mario Galaxy 2: Jesus and Bowser join forces to kick Mario's ass! So yeah, that's not really a happy ending.

I agree that these are really quite depressive for a happy ending, especially sly that one always struck me as quite sad for this kind of game. Anyway great blog keep it up.

The "in water ending" is extremely depressing, and is considered the 2nd happiest ending in the game!

Those games end on perfect terms . there video games the people dont get tramatized or anything. because there fictional characters if you going to give "wouldnt sora kill his parents?" then your applying human attributes and sideeffects to a fictional character well then can heartless really exsist lol . so your whole arguement is invalid.
