Preview: BORDERLANDS

By DestinRL on September 15, 2009, 1:08 pm

I should be thanking the developers. Up until about an hour before writing this, I thought we were going to pass on preview coverage of Borderlands because we weren't able to use any video footage. Well, having the guilty concience I do and having a lot of videos do this week I said "I'm going to sit down, and give this game about an hour." It took about 5 minutes and I was hooked. In the preview code we were sent, you don't get a whole lot of story. The game starts out with you on a bus and allows you to pick from one of 4 character types. Each has two preferred weapon types, and an action skill. These classes included the following. A Soldier who prefers Combat Rifles, Shotguns and has an Action Skill of a Scorpio Turret. A Hunter who prefers Sniper Rifles Revolvers and has an Action Skill of Bloodwing. A Berserker who likes Explosive weapons and his fists with an Action Skill of Berserk, and finally a Siren who prefers Incendiary Shock and Corrosive guns with an Action Skill of Phasewalk. Usually when I play a game like this I take the Soldier class so thats exactly what I did. Beginning the preview starts off like most. It gets you accustomed to the controls and you get to meet your guide. A little robot who shows you around and teaches you the basics. There is even some very basic character customization where you can change your name, and the colors of your attire. After you do that...the action starts. From this point on I'll try not to give you a play by play of every piece of action ... oh and theres plenty of action to be had, but I will tell you that this game will not disappoint. One of the main things that really keeps the action moving is the music that Gearbox selected for the game. It's not really techno but it's pretty close. It just fits with each scenario you end up in and it's catchy. Oh and lets not forget to talk about the weapons. One of the biggest selling points of the game was the fact that there are 10 Bajillion guns. Now I only got to use about 3 distinctly different weapons, but I probably picked up 7 different types of pistols. That and I only got about an hour with the title. To wrap up this short preview (and I apologize for Gearbox and 2K for not having more time with it) I guess I could tell you about some of the things you're going to be missing if you pass on it. You're going to miss out on four player co-operative play, challenges that can be issued to your friend with a melee attack, meeting a whole lot of ...interesting in game characters, and the most important part of any game. A whole lot of fun. There was a lot I was unable to try out in the hour I spent with the title but I can't wait to get my hands on it again. If you haven't I'd suggest pre-ordering this one at GameAttack today. Hopefully I'll see you in the arid Badlands in search of the vault when the games released October 20th 2009. See you then! I'm really pumped for this game. It looks better than your average FPS. Four player co op should be sweet. But the other impressions i have read about said more about the guns than anything else, so its good to see some other aspects of the game. Its something other than Modern Warfare 2.

Crazy ass image gallery, Destin. I don't think I've even seen these pictures on other sites (at least not yet).

I thought I had my game yearlist all done. Assassins Creed 2, Uncharted 2, Modern Warfare 2 and the Fallout 3 GOTY edition. But now i've read this and seen the pics. I may just have to pick this up too.

I'm going to be VERY poor by the end of the year. :p

Yes, I know. I look a bit like Ron Weasley.

The screens, and the trailer were awesome. This looks very much like a Fallout 3 competitor(?). Is there any similarities? This one seems more aimed towards shooter than RPG, I saw the points sytem, which is fun in most games where you build characters. Looking forward to this one!

Is the 4 player co-op local split-screen? This seems like a fun game to buy and get me three buddies round for a night playing it. If the co-op is online only however, that is a deal breaker.

Ever since E3 I have been pumped for this game! Even more than MW 2! If there is one game I'm going to get, it's this one! Thanks for the quick preview Destin, now I am sure that I'm going to buy this on day 1! Not only that but I've gotten 3 of my friends interested for that 4 player co-op! I can't wait!
