Twilight Princess: The Triforce Leaving Ganon

By Casual Matt on July 5, 2008, 8:28 pm

WARNING: This blog contains SPOILERS about the ending of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess Well, this scene, aside from being awesome, has been the subject of much debate and speculation. Mostly about the appearance of Zant, which there is a lovely explanation of in this thread which I totally buy. But I'd like to talk about something else. The significance of the Triforce of Power leaving Ganon. Now, one might assume that the Triforce left him because he was dying. However, watching that scene again, it looks like he didn't actually start dying until after the Triforce left him. It certainly would fit because most fans, myself included, subscribe to the idea that when Ganon has the Triforce of Power, the only thing that can kill him is the Silver Arrows, which this game lacked. But the Triforce never left Ganon in the Adult Timeline when he was near death. Why did it leave him here? My theory is as follows. In Ocarina of Time, as we all know, Ganon got the Triforce of Power by touching the complete Triforce. He acquired it for himself. Meanwhile, the Triforce of Courage and Wisdom were transferred to Link and Zelda, the two chosen by destiny. But in Twilight Princess, in the Child Timeline, Ganon got the Triforce through the "Divine Prank". Now my opinion on this is that when Link was sent back at the end of Ocarina of Time, he both kept the Triforce of Courage and left behind it at the same time, in a sense. The Triforce of Courage, when Link left, was broken into eight pieces and scattered, as stated in The Wind Waker. But the Triforce mark is seen on the back of his hand at the end of Ocarina of Time. I think this is because when Link returned to the past, the Triforce of Courage was somehow drawn to him because he was meant to have it. And when this happened, the pieces of Wisdom and Power went to those chosen by destiny, those who should have had them, Zelda and Ganon. Now, my take on Twilight Princess is that since Ganon didn't get the Triforce for himself, but instead through the Divine Prank, he didn't really earn it for himself. In the Adult Timeline, he stole the Triforce, and it stayed with him until he recombined the True Force at the end of The Wind Waker, despite the fact that he nearly died at the end of Ocarina of time. But in Twilight Princess, after Ganon was defeated, the Essence of the Triforce somehow deemed him unworthy, and left him to die. Now there is also the issue that the Triforce of Power resurrected Ganon after his execution at the hands of the Sages. I believe the big difference here is the exclusion of the Master Sword. Yes, the Sages Sword badly injured Ganon, and the scar stayed with him, but as long he had the Triforce, there was no real danger of it actually killing him. Another way to look at it, though, is that could very well have been, and in my opinion, probably was, the first time Ganon used the power of the Triforce in that timeline. What if when he got it, it layed dormant within him, and was, in a sense, "activated" when he needed it. Either way, I think the main point here is that when Ganon was run through by the Master Sword, the Triforce somehow "chose" to leave him to die. At which point, the Zant onmyoji theory from the other thread comes into play.

'i don't buy the split timeline and Nintendo hasn't CONFIRMED it' thing, so i won't.

I like your ideas, but I still don't believe Ganondorf had the actual triforce in Twilight Princess. I believe that he, link, and zelda were 'destined humans' that are granted an unnatural amount of power.

And if Ganon has the triforce, it could be severed from him by using the master sword. If you remember as well as i do, in Lttp's backstory it was revealed that the Master Sword could be used to 'reject' the power of the triforce, so a stab to the heart by this blade has the ability to seperate him from this power.

The reason he wasn't seperated from the triforce of power in OOT? Link didn't kill him. Don't know why, but he didn't.

Could we get a link of how the timeline is supposed to look? Because that would help me immensely. I long since lost track of how the hell it all went.

I can't even figure out the Ocarina of Time timeline-- let alone the whole series! The only ones I can place are The original, Zelda II and A Link to the Past.
