My Honest Thoughts on the New Street Fighter / Chun Li Movie

By Casual Matt on June 24, 2008, 9:20 am

Yes, it will fail. Because it's a movie based off a game. A fighting game. That only uses a few of the fighters. And not even the main ones. Seriously, why do people go to see movie adaptations of video games and comics? To see their favorite characters on the silver screen. If I go to see a Street Fighter movie, I want to see Dhalsim, Bison, Chun-Li, Guile, Blanka, E. Honda, Zangeif, Sagat, Ken, and especially Ryu all beating the everloving snot out of one another. Now, I'm not saying this movie will automatically suck based on character usage. Although the fact that it's a video game movie kind of guarantees that, anyway. Rather, what I'm saying, is that it looses it's appeal. Only being familiar with fighters from Street Fighter II (Super Turbo Deluxe Fantastic Remix bluhdebluh...), I don't even know who the **** Gen and Charlie are. So if I went to see this movie ignorant of the cast of characters, I'd be spending the whole time wondering when someone from the game other than Chun Li was going to show up. Seriously, giving some focus to the plot will probably make this movie better in the sense of what a good movie should be. But once again, people don't go to these kinds of movies for brilliant plots. People go to see their favorite characters. So by focusing on one character, they're really narrowing down their target audiences to Chun-Li fetishists, and the ignorant.

There's too many favorite characters to PUT on the silver screen to really make a coherent, good movie out of it. The large cast/Good movie fluke (Like the first x-men movie) doesn't happen too often. I think the idea to scale back the movie in order for it to have a focus is an exceptionally mature, inspired decision that you don't generally see too often in franchise popcorn films designed mostly to steal the audience's money. Plus it makes good business sense in that, if this is successful, they can make more money by making movies based on the other popular characters. (If by some random act of God this movie is successful, bet your ass we'll see Legend of Ryu next.)

Not saying it's going to be a good movie, but it's at least a sign that shows they know what they're doing this time around. I mean, at least from the movie making sense. So even if it is good, you'll see people whining about the lack of characters. So whatever, they lose either way.

not like a Street Fighter movie is a good idea anyway.

EDIT: Oh, and technically Chun-Li is the main character of Street Fighter 2, but we'd have to go into long discussions about the canonical plot of a fighting game and really, who wants that?
