A Rambling Rant on the Current Console Generation

By Casual Matt on November 28, 2008, 9:01 pm

As far as I'm concerned, this entire console generation is a joke. Nintendo's already pumped out the Wii versions of it's main franchises (StarFox notwithstanding) and trying to find any third party games for the Wii that actually use the control scheme effectively is like trying to find a hay in a needle stack. And online may be free but it still sucks a big bag of dicks. Although Virtual Console is still a redeeming factor. And it helps that the Wii is the only console this generation with excellent backwards compatibility, which is good because I always thought the GameCube was an under appreciated gem, with many great games. The 360 is the oldest console in the race right now, but that's mainly because it got pushed out into stores before it could even get dressed, which might be why it's failure rate is one of the highest of anything ever made. Between internal fans giving out and red rings of death, if the first 360 you bought actually worked, then you're certainly a lucky one, which is pretty terrible if you stop and think for a second. But of course the 360 still has the best online, even if you have to pay for it. And Microsoft has addressed the hardware issues, so even if your 360 ended up bricked within an hour of buying it, you probably have a working one now at little to no cost to yourself. That being said, from what I've seen, between achievements and whatnot, the 360 dashboard features and whatnot are pretty impressive, so despite the fact that I'm traditionally a Nintendo fanboy, I'm also a 360 enthusiast. Although Microsoft did lose some respect from me by ripping off Nintendo's Miis, but the whole industry is practically built on people recycling ideas that others came up with, so whatever. Then there's the PS3. The colossal black monolith that launched at five hundred and ninety nine US dollars with barely any worthwhile games for what I'm sure felt like eons to anybody who was insane enough to buy one at launch. Of course, I'm so used to making fun of the PS3 due to the outrageous price and lack of games that I forget those points aren't really valid anymore. Sony has stripped out things like PS2 backwards compatibility and has since dropped the price by approximately the value of a new PS2. So I suppose it works out, even if it means you have more RCA cables to manage if you want to play both PS2 and PS3 games. As for the PS3 library goes, I feel like it's been mirroring the X-Box 360 lately in the way that almost every third party game comes out on both. Honestly I think the choice between PS3 and 360 at this point depends on whether you prefer Halo or Metal Gear. The PS3 is certainly going to have all the same features as the 360 soon considering they've already got their own achievement system. Right now I have a Wii and a 360 so I really feel no need to buy a PS3 at any point. At least until God of War III comes out, but I'll be damned if I buy a new system for one game. And if I really need my God of War fix, I've still got a PS2. So I'd guess that the PS3 vs 360 debate now often falls on which one you bought first, and since 360 had it's launch a whole year ahead of the PS3. But both consoles seemed to hit the ground running at their respective launches while Nintendo somehow strolled leisurely to profit town with nary a good third party game in sight (until No More Heroes came along, of course).

Nintendo did not make the virtual avatar, there have been many IM/Chat programs that used similar graphics to represent a person long before the Wii came out. MSN had such a program. They may have been the first to use it in the console world, but they were definitely not the first to ever use them.
