This week a g1 email sparks some serious questions about morality as well as we're back from PAX, with great stories for you including one of the worst moments of confusion ever by Destin. Make sure to stay tuned in 'till the end of the show to hear some important news about SideScrollers.
VOLUME!!!
For the love of God, humanity, reason, sanity, Pete and donuts turn up the volume!!
no offense man but you gotta
no offense man but you gotta be deaf. It's turned up pretty damn loud this week- I made sure of it.
I agree.
Sound was fine.
Sidecrollers on a Tuesday?!?!? Surely that'll like, unbalance the universe or something!
Only joking, lololol.

Perhaps...
Get new speakers... head phones... or check your sound settings. I never had a problem with the old side scrollers let alone the newer version.

I can kinda relate.
I can kinda relate. SideScrollers' volume seems to be lower compared to other audio files I have. It only becomes a problem when I have another file coming up on the playlist and it blares really loud. Not a SideScroller problem, just something i have to keep in mind.
Downloading now, can't wait to listen to it!
yeah...
Compared to music files and other audio things, Sidescrollers is always quite. Too quiet, but the podcast was phenomenal none the less. It always is.
It was fine for me...
I use a headset if that helps. They're usually better for quieter stuff than speakers (plus when they're loud, they don't wake people up when they're sleeping).
It just needs some
It just needs some compression, that would solve everything!
Here is an example on how compression can make a huge difference. (Please listen to the entire episode of SideScrollers BEFORE listening to these clips)
Here is 4mins of the Regular SideScrollers;

Now heres that same clip with compression added.

The sound was fine this week to me...
finally
another one of my addictions tended to. And High School Ben is awesome, was very honest, and I agree with him completely on the piracy thing.
Yay!!!
I have been waiting for this to be posted for almost an hour now >:)
Craig's new intro is a fail, I am sorry :)
Woot, been craving some
Woot, been craving some SideScrollers, thanks Craig!
Destin's Field Trip
Oh, what I would have given to have been there to see everyone's reaction to Destin running into the woman's bathroom... Definitely a vintage moment right there.
Always a great SideScrollers guys! Keep up the quality work.
Destin's trip, Snake's Memories...
I had the same problem once... it was a brand new wal-mart, I couldn't hold it for the life of me... So I just rushed into the restroom. I sat there and took theee most biggest "amount of time" I ever have in a public restroom... (time was 1/2 an hour) Keep in mind this was an empty bathroom, no one was in there except me.
As I started to wash my hands, I looked around to only find that there was a stainless steel container mounted to the wall. first thought was, "wow, its like a seven eleven, they sell condoms in the bathroom." Noope, Feminine napkins... So the next thought was, "where are the masculine Napkins?" (I didn't know what a feminine napkin was...)
so I thought nothing of it and stated to walk out... when I realized, "OH CRAP!! WOMEN'S BATHROOM!!!! Rushing out, I run into a woman, she becomes startled at what gender had walked out of the restroom and double checked. She laughs and so does an old man who was the janitor...

Formats
The problem with buying games from Amazon and such is that they may only be in the NTSC(?) format where some places (like New Zealand where I am) use the PAL format. Also with the Emulation of the Old games I only do it because I have no money to buy already rare old school system here in NZ but I want to experience them especially the NES & SNES. Also I don't think its technically piracy is you don't play for it.
Didn't think of that... if
Didn't think of that... if you're not in North America or South Koreo that's a problem. good point!
But wait... Mexico uses NTSC, so...
yay! the nut news came into the news desk!!!
That news was going on since last friday here in Malaysia, they resume the news today, where the health consultant said having a long one doesnt mean great times. gahahah, this subject is so wrong...
Yaarrrr!
I've pirated games in the past and I'll likely continue to do so for two reasons:
1) I live in Australia. Not only do we get shafted when it comes to release dates but most games cost a lot more than they do in the US. Now to give an example. Rock Band. The Australian release date for Rock Band is 10th October 2008 and its going to cost AU$120 for just the game. Now I could buy the stand alone game on playasia.com for US$65 (about AU$78). So not only is the game coming out almost one year late here but its going to cost about $40 more, and this isn't even factoring in the costs of the instruments needed to actually play the game.
Now ok, this is an extreme example but nearly every game release has around 2-3 months tacked onto it over here. To top it all off I can't just import games from amazon.com like you guys suggested because Australia is a PAL region and most consoles are region locked.
2) I'm actually more of a PC gamer and this only relates to PC games. Copy protection. That's right the very thing companies use to try to stop piracy makes me want to pirate games sometimes. Some of these systems are just retarded (I'm looking at you secuROM) and it makes me want to pirate the games just so the companies stop using them.
Limited game installs and games that wont run till you disable virtual CD drives can go to hell.
All this said I still try to buy all my games legit and if I download a game and I feel its worth the money I'll go out and buy it (assuming its actually out in Australia).
PS. Apologies for the giant wall of text.
You know...
Pirating games won't make these companies stop using securom. It will make them either use even more atrocious anti-piracy tools or stop making games for the PC.
Owww
Owww when Corey yelled played the music I had headphones on and that hurt, good job though, I was laughing and Craig you're probably gonna be right on what the G1s are gonna ask what Corey did, its none of my concern though lol.
pirates
I sadly download old games. It's not that I don't want them in my collection, it just hard to find them, and the one place I can they want to charge me 12 bucks for a NES game. I can see paying 2-5 dollars maybe but 12 bucks? F--- that, I will just download it and play it on my laptop. Although in other countries I can see why pirating is so big, would you pay 110 bucks for a new spanking game or 10 for the cheap stolen version? I'd buy the cheap if only I didn't have access to the internet, its damn ridiculous anyplace charges that much for a game. Hell it's hard enough for me now to buy a game, I usually wait until it drops 20 bucks or so.
- Towski
Haaaa Destin it happens!
I walked into the restroom at the six flags theme park in California and thought huh no urinals oh well fine with me i like my personal space. So i walked into a stall and half way through my business i heard the giggles and chat but it did'nt hit me for few seconds. Thats when i peeked over the wall to complete my living nightmare. But luckily i had really long hair so i pulled it down the sides of my face opened the stall door and walked out swiftly and they ladies where none the wiser. And that plan did take some stressful time in the stall to come up with.
thanks for making me not the only one so far.And bringing that hilarious memory back to me.

An Emulation Question
You've made it quite apparent that you frown upon emulation slightly for a number of reasons, but what is your opinion of Japanese-only games that, through emulation, you can play in English with a fan-made translation? Any SNES RPG fans may have remembered the disappointment in not having Seiken Densetsu 3 (the sequel to Secret of Mana) released in the West but now, thanks to the magic of the internet, you can play this game entirely in English. More recently, Mother 3 (Earthbound's long-awaited sequel) for the GBA has been translated and this game is still available at retail. Is it different to emulate a game for this purpose or do you hold the same opinion of it, ie. that you should still own the game, albeit in an unplayable form before you get a ROM?
Does that extend to modern games? Say for some strange reason,, Final Fantasy XIII was announced to not be released outside of Japan. What would your opinion be of people who downloaded the game alongside a fan-made patch so that they could play it? True, there's no way FFXIII won't come out here, but many great games never see Western stores so this is just an extreme example.
what happened
did corey like rape a kid or something
Who/what recieved booze from
Who/what recieved booze from Corey?
With booze, anybody can get
With booze, anybody can get laid, and since Corey is a girl, you could pretty much guess what happened, from that much. But of course she was only thirteen at the time, but that doesn't mean getting drunk at that age is impossible, is it?
THQ -> Company of Heroes.. And about piracy (NO AMAZON HERE)
THQ -> Company of Heroes, STALKER, Saints Row 2 (and like they said SmackDown! vs. RAW).
I feel same like that g1 who Craig talked about. I live in Estonia: Games are about 100$, there is no renting and there isn't stuff like Amazon. And a average person gets 3x times less money than people in USA...
Right now i'm importige stuff from UK and games are a little bit cheaper and after i have played it i sell it on second hand market because then i get most of my money back because even imported games cost a lot.
:(
Woah! that was MY email ??
i'm still downloading the podcast so i cant hear it just yet...
but it sounds like my email i sent to Craig, pointing to my only blog post ... if that's me, i cant believe you read it! thanks a lot!

about the mail thing
dude I can clomplete understand you, (by the way Im from chile so please excuse my english)
the peolple of screwattack forgot a couple of things:
A) In latiamerica the economy is not the best, to be honest mot of the people can't buy the official games, not even in te original price.
B) most of the people think that the internet is all around the world, but here 75% of the houses dont have a connection, (most people go to interet center), this mean that not everyone knows about amason or fedex, and not everyone has ever made a online buy (here is for rich people)
C) inflation here is way to high, so make a credit buy here, you have to think about it ALOT...
and the last: most of people (even rich) here can't buy games in the same speed, to e honest in a good year you can buy 3 or 4 games, when you are rich, so... I dont buy pirates games (luckly im kinda, have money) but i UNDERSTAND....
Yup... we latins can have a hard time...
Yeah, I'm from Mexico and... I think it was Destin who said that here we are up to the neck with piracy... yes, he's right... and I'm DAMN pissed...
There was a time, when I was younger, when I liked to buy pirated games, I just discovered them and I thought they were like the best thing ever happened to me, I could have any game for like... 1 buck? (10 pesos) and so I did it, for like... 2 years more or less... (I continued writing this... but it turned out to be a lot of text, so I'll better open up a blog entry and put it there, I hope someone has the interest to read my story... ha ha ha ha)

What did Corey
Do I need to know
Did she kick a puppy?
Did she burn down lots of stuff?
Did she break someones leg while on her Battletoads rampage?
I need to know
Nope
She touched MC Hammer,
also on another occasion she mocked Chuck Norris to his face, Chuck Norris then sat her down and made her play Battletoads w/ him where not only did he beat the game in 1 life, but he killed Corey every time she came back to life (why do you think she hates it so much). "Impossible" you may be saying, nothing is impossible for Chuck Norris.
Corey, Tell us!
Corey please tull us, we'll give money :D
I'll be up for 20dollars! Who's with me?
Piracy looking from the inside out...
As a developer, you know that people are going to pirate your work. I just wish that the publishers would not use such a brute force security. I think having some protection that will allow the average user not be able to share a single copy of the game with all their friends, that's good. That tech savvy users will hack the game the day it comes out.
I don't know the answer to this puzzle, but many have tried. Try making the game the same price as a DVD, it still gets pirated. Add thick layer authentication, you get bad disks, confused users, and still pirated. And the game industry even releases it for free, supported by in-game ads, hackers make an update so you don't see any of the ads, so the publisher/developers don't make back the investment.
Soon your going see games that you can only play if your logged onto the net, regardless if its a multilayer game or not. Checking your data to make sure it was not messed with.
I like the online delivery game system Steam, from both the standpoint of player and developer. You buy the games though the steam and play it using steam. I think strong multiplayer game like Team Fortress 2 have a better time defending from piracy, due to the game being tied to the steam app.
I only worry about the game industry popping like a bubble from piracy. Publishers are forced to cut +75% of games that are mid to large scale. Then the pirates wont have any good games to pirate from... Then all we get play are free web based flash games... I lose my house, wife and children... Living in a Van down by the river, Eating government cheese.
what did corey do???
come on!! we want to know!!
Poor Corey
Poor Corey, leave her alone, your gonna drive the poor girl insane. lol
Next to Argentina...
Well I live in the country next to Argentina, Chile.
Here the prices are a little bit higher, but not insanely higher.
For example Metal Gear Solid 4, Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3 cost me 35000 chilean pesos each one, that like 72 USD each game.
I think its a reasonable price, but there are people that dont agree with me and prefers piracy.
yeey for Tuesday
yeey for Tuesday SideScrollers!

I Think...
I think he's just trying to earn some extra points. No points for this uber nerd. You get a dirty shoe instead.
FYI, I had not listened to the podcast yet during that last Re:
I just realized that this guy was wrong all along! It IS the Spark Man theme from MegaMan III. How do I know this? Bucause I'm the one that made the remix! So the next time you make an ignorant remark like that again, DO SOME RESEARCH! That's something that Craig would say the same. [like that bastard on YouTube who thought SA has entirely sold out to Viacom... WRONG!].
P.S. But Craig did make a mistake of mispronouncing my name, but at least he tried. Fuck-ups ftw! ^_^

SideScrollers - File Format
What file format does SideScrollers use?
I've been having to download it to my computer, but in the past I've been able to stream it.
Chill out guys
Corey was young and needed the money. End of story!
But seroiusly, what happened?
My Theories:
Corey got drunk, got her parents camera, and made a sex tape of her and her 3 best friends.
Corey beat a poor, defenseless kitten cuz she was trippin on acid.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST!
Corey killed the man who made Battletoads and videotaped it, similar to the Joker in the Dark Knight
Degrading
"Corey got drunk, got her parents camera, and made a sex tape of her and her 3 best friends."
It honestly must be extremely hard for Corey to work with a company that has an online base. Just one of the reasons why it sucks to be a girl who uses the internet.

My hometown!
Haha awesome my hometown Modesto, CA got into Sidescrollers. My girlfriend was in the Denny's that guy walked into. She said he was carrying a big ass knife and there was blood all over him. Everyone was evacuated out the door and the cops came and had a standoff. My girlfriend wanted to see him get shot down but they tazered him, hehe my girlfriend is kinda unusual. Her car was parked right near where the standoff was so she had to come back late at night to pick up her car. Yay my hometown, we grow two things here car-thieves and methheads. Our county has the highest rate of Grand Theft Auto per capita in the nation! Woohoo! Next GTA game should be set in my town.

Xbox live gamertag: Emic Etic add me everyone!
That makes two of us!
Ha i never thought i'd ever see the day i find someone from Modesto, Ca on ScrewAttack, everyones so spread out. But yeah i heard about that crazy shit, me and my friend used to go to that Denny's at 5 points all the time, but not anymore, would've been cool to witness something like that.
Thank
Untranslated Games
The only games that I personally would ever emulate are games that Nintendo refused to translated Like mother, Mother 3, Bahamut Lagoon. I always check to make sure that their are no translation in existence and as soon as one is released I delete the ROM and buy it. For example I will erase DQ5 rom as soon as it comes out on DS. Other than that it's evil.
200 bucks???
at that price there stealing from you!!!
lol
THQ does have games
They have got the dawn of war series, and those games are awesome.
I dont really think the argument that...
...
people from mexico, argentinia etc. could just order from amazon is pretty convincing.
Just look at the GDP of these countries per resident.
These countries are nearly "Third World countries".
Just compare the GDP per person (2007):
Mexico: 8.479
Argentina: 6.606
USA: 45.845
So. You could think anyone would buy a game if it is even expensive for the residents and is a luxury article?
I dont really think that this argument is convincing.
Its more like: "I couldnt even afford it if I bought it from the US."
And since I live here in Germany, I can say, that the international shipping fees from amazon.com are fucking expensive, at least when I tried to order some Cds...
Whether its 50$ or 210$. Its too expensive for residents from such countries like Mexico, Argentina etc.
And here I like europe. You just have to go to Western Russia or even Poland and you can get original games for a cheap price.
Even Bad Day L.A. wasnt sold ordinary. You could get it in some magazine for 5€ on its release day.
