This past week everyone was busy talking about E3 but the true event was taking place about 15 minutes away in Santa Monica. If you've seen the King of Kong you know the backstory between Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell- so do we have a new world record holder? You might be surprised at the results! A big thanks to our friends over at
GirlGamer.com who hooked us up with the oh-so exclusive invite. Chick gamers are rad.
Unlucky
Well he tried anyways... Thats what counts.
own it
own the dvd its cool
aww i wanted to see the
aww i wanted to see the douche who kept saying "donkey kong kill screen" over and over and over
DK ftw
tough break Steve, you can always try again another time
Poor guy...
At least he tried, and I'm sure he'll try again. :)
shame sucks he didant make
shame sucks he didant make it =(
That sucked
How you going to NOT break the record after you made such a big fuss. I Won't be buying any loser webbie ware... FAIL!!!
I loved the film. I admit
I loved the film. I admit Mitchell's perfect Pac-Man game is real impressive, but does he really need to target and beat Wiebe? I'm still pulling for you, Wiebe! YOU CAN DO IT!!!

that mitchell guy sucks.
that mitchell guy sucks. hope wiebe will kick his ass soon
wow, very cool that you got to interview him
Very awesome. It would have been cool to meet him
Steve Wiebe for President!
wouldn't he get bored?
wouldn't you get bored from playing a game like Donkey Kong for 2 hours straight?
You've really got to hand it to Steve Wiebe and Mitchell.
Wiebe and Mitchell have really pushed the limits for Donkey Kong records. People used to think Mitchell's old record was unbeatable, and now Steve and Mitchell are close to doubling it.
For those of you that haven't seen King of Kong yet, you really should. Its a great documentary, and even though many of the people involved may be seen as geeks, its always nice to find people with so much enthusiasm and dedication towards gaming.
Good Try!
Love this guy, great job Wiebe. Although he didn't win he isn't giving up, and Billy Mitchell and Steve are very close to each other score wise so don't give up.
Bad luck
Bad luck to Steve. One day, the king of sauce will fall.
lol you uploaded this a
lol you uploaded this a while before you posted this. Well you gotta try. That he did.
Damn
It sucks Wiebe didn't beat the record. IMO he is still the DK champion instead of that cheater Billy Mitchel.
He needs to try again because well.. he's just better than Billy
Damn, maybe next time.
Good luck next time Steve, you got a lot of fans cheering for you!

The average woman would rather have beauty than brains, you see the average man can see better than he can think.
Hey I think Screwattack
Hey I think Screwattack should buy an offical DK machine and then fly Wiebe to the SA HQ in Dallas TX and let him break it on Screwattack ground, because we all know Screwattack ground is good luck and then you could say you had a WR set at the HQ.
I cant imagine playing under
I cant imagine playing under all that pressure would be good for you. My high score is actually higher than what he got there at 504900. But that was on the Nes version which is slightly different
Mitchell...
...is an ass
I agree
After watching King of Kong, Billy Mitchell looked like a huge douche bag. Even his cronies had respect for Steve Weibe by the end. I hope Steve breaks the record because he is a great stand-up guy; not like that assclown Mitchell
It's Afghanistanimation
Wiebe is a cool guy, but so
Wiebe is a cool guy, but so is Mitchell. If you're taking your impressions of Billy from KoK, you have to realize that it was a movie made for entertainment more than it was a documentary. You can get the full scoop on the inaccuracies and slanted portrayals in the movie over at www.twingalaxies.com.
*snort*
Dude, if you really think Billy Mitchell is how they portrayed him in that movie, you need to do some research. Calling King of Kong a documentary is the same thing as calling The Blair Witch Project a documentary. Saying Billy is an ass based on what you saw in a "movie" is ignorant.
90% of the "facts" in that movie are twisted versions of real life events and statistics. One of the main reasons you don't see Billy compete in the movie is because he wasn't prepped, because he has devoted less time to professional gaming now that he has a family.
Look at what happened to Steve Wiebe, the supposed Donkey Kong savant. He dies on the first level, and doesn't even break half a million. It would be interesting to see what kind of prep he put in to this attempt. If it was very little, then nobody can say a thing about Mitchell not playing during the King of Kong. If it was a lot, same thing.
Seeing this video actually pokes some holes in the King of Kong version of reality.
Don't get me wrong, seeing Steve Wiebe get the record would be awesome. Mainly because the dude represents my home state. But not because it was the world of competitive gaming vs. Steve Wiebe.
Do some research, get the facts straight from the source, watch the movie again, and you'll see that the filmmakers took many of the events out of order and didn't show certain filmed aspects because it would have ruined the theme of the movie. Little guy takes over the world.
Orz
He didn't die on the first level... The boards repeat themselves every 4 boards. Do your research.
The film makers did take liberties, but Billy Mitchell did come off smug in his own respect when he was being interviewed.
He came off as extrememly arogant during some parts, and this was all based on the tone and inflectino of his voice.. you can't edit that in.
Personally, I don't mind either of them, because I have seen Billy on a lot of shows and he did seem to be an ok guy, who just has a lot of pride in being the best at something. It just seems he takes it a little too far, like he sucks at everything else in life.
Cool vid
DANG IT I DIED ON THE FIRST LEVEL
FATALITY!!! hahaha
FATALITY!!! hahaha
Craig you jinxed him!!! If i
Craig you jinxed him!!! If i were to die on the first level i would just start over.
Billy Mitchell, how does it
Billy Mitchell, how does it feel to be hated so much?
Oh wait, nothing. You're too busy thinking you're perfect.
Steve, you're awesome. Even if you don't beat his score, you keep on trying. You're a trooper, man.
Not that either of these guys will see these comnents. lol
Too bad
That sucks. He definitely deserves the record more than Mitchell though.
Lol, why? He hasn't earned
Lol, why? He hasn't earned it yet.
I bet...
weibe cried that night
Mitchell was kinda unfairly
Mitchell was kinda unfairly edited to look like a douche in King Of Kong, although it's still a great film.
I love King of Kong. Steve
I love King of Kong. Steve is seriously Rocky of video games, the ultimate underdog.
hmmm...
I thought Steve was from the Redmond, Washington area...
Eh
Never saw all of the movie, and to tell the truth I dont really care that there are these records and guys in their late 30's early 40's are still defending them.
The preview copy I saw years back made me sick and almost swear off gaming. Seeing that Billy made his whole life off a record on some 20 year old game and that he made it his life to fight this other guy. Just fucking sad.
In the words of William Shatner on Saturday Night Live years ago...
"Get a Life!"
Considering
he has a family and owns a successful hot sauce company, I would say he has a life, plus a hobby.

Still
There were others on that movie that seemed like they worried more about their 1970-something record for Mrs.Pac-man than things like a life... family... and other things. Had to stop watching when they showed the guy who had the record for I think Centipede freak out about someone might get close to his 20 year old record.
That guy looked like he would kill himself if someone did break it.
Remember
Back in the day gaming was arcade only. The high scores these guys set took more than several hours of practice and more than a few hours to actually set the record score. That kind of thing is hard to replicate and if broken you know that guy would go back and work hard again to get the best score.
Being passionate about a hobby is not weird. Putting other people down for their hobby is though.
Word, now get this man some
Word, now get this man some points!
PRONTO
heh brownie points :P
DIED ON THE FIRST LEVEL.....EMBARRASSING
It's on like Donkey Kong.
billy = douche
i hate billy mitchell he is such a prick i'd really like to steve take the crown
False.
Billy Mitchell was portrayed as "The Bad Guy" in King of Kong by the movie's director in order to produce drama.
Thank you.
It wasn't a "documentary." It was real life footage, spliced together in such a way that they made someone look like a bad guy when in fact the only bad guys are the films producers.
And Brian Kuh. I just hate that guy. Not just because of the movie.
I Give the Guy Credit
Getting up to a million points is not an easy thing to do. Him only getting 450,000 points is amazing up to an average gamer's standards.
Heh, did anyone notice the "Superbad" poster at about 00:15?
