We don't hit a whole lot of Master System titles but this time around Guru Larry pays tribute to one he feels is one of the greatest titles for the console- Wonder Boy III
No, Larry is right... Zelda is a rpg (a-rpg)
An adventure game is something like maniac mansion, shadowgate (for you console fans), monkey island, sam & max.
And please dont tell me that Zelda has more in common with sam & max than it has with secret of mana !

I beg to differ! Zelda misses the aspect an RPG always has: Experience and level-ups. Well, except Adventure Of Link, but that one's just... meh.
And if you don't agree with that, I can see that. But I say it's an adventure. The games you described aren't adventure games, officially. They're Point-And-Click games. There is a difference.

Exp and levels are only an aspect of a RPG as you already have writen. To be an RPG you only need a progressing story line were you play out the game were you assume the role of a fictinal charecter. While adventure games emphizise investigation, exploration, and puzzle-solving. So those Point-And-Click games are in fact Adventure games. And Zelda is a Adventure RPG game.

That would make every single game where you play as a character an rpg. Shit man that would make Mario 3 an rpg. It has a progressing story, where you play out the game, where you have assumed the role of a fictional character. Zelda is not an rpg. That is my opinion, yours is that it's not. But please, try and give definitions that don't describe nearly every game as an rpg.

Well to be honest there are RPG elements in a lot of games. You have to remember what RPG stands for Roll Playing Game. The diffrence between Mario 3 and Zelda is a stylistic view. Where as Mario is a platformer zelda is more at a 3rd person view. Now were I personally make a RPG is how in depht is the story line. In Mario the only story you really get is Bowser kid napped the princes, now go out and save her. While in Zelda they give you a whole back story of the tri-force and other things.
I must say that was a really neat video; I'm quite surprised at myself for actually not knowing of this title being a Genesis owner. It looks like a pretty sweet game and I'm going to keep my eyes open for it.
As always Larry the video was great work so thanks and I look forward to the next!

Well the TurboGraphx version is on VC at the moment.
But not sure if the MS version will see the light of day as it's almost the same title. Personally I prefer the MS version, but thats because I grew up on it.

Of course its an Rpg. if the character goes on a quest of epic proportions spanning sequels and the gameplay includes upgrading your character and collecting items and such to help you than yeah... its an RPG. i think you need brush up on your stuff a bit. awesome job though larry.

With that description, any game that isn't a sports game can be considered on RPG >_> You mean Super Mario Bros is an RPG? Well, you upgrade your character and collect items and collecting enough coins helps you, and the quest to save the princess from a giant spiky fire-breathing turtle and passing through a bunch of different landscapes and underground tunnels and various castles defeating clones of said giant turtle, that's pretty epic... It MUST be a RPG.
In the same sense, Zelda isn't really a RPG. The only one in the series that is a RPG is Zelda 2, and that's pushing it. Zelda games are action-adventure games. Having a few RPG elements and powering up isn't enough to make a game a RPG. I mean, i saw some sport games that had RPG elements, but no one in the right mind would call them RPGs.
Oh well, great review Larry. The game does seem like a fun platformer.

I am not sure how well known this is, but a friend of mine and I were messing around with this game when he received it for his Master System and found a password. Now, being the avid reader that I am, I was pouring through the manual while my friend was playing. In the manual, they give an example of a password as it would appear in the game. Being curious, we tried it but it didn't work. Now, being a bit odd as I am, I told my friend to try it in reverse. And lo and behold it worked! The password unlocks all the forms and leaves you with just the final boss to fight. I wish I could find the manual. My buddy could rattle that password off if ever you asked, even 15 years later.

The Master System is shockingly overlooked next to the NES, despite it having fantastic graphics for the time and a sweet collection of games! This game is certainly going on my 'to find' list!

This game is insanely awesome. There's also a password (I forget exactly what it does) where you type OPEN THE GREN DOOR or something like that with the letters and numbers. I couldn't put this game down, it's almost Super Metroid quality (seriously).
No these games have been known as adventure games for decades, the "point & click" name has started emerging relatively recently because you guys had your genres mixed up and didnt even know what an adventure game was.
Seriously, I've been following the pc scene (THE adventure scene) since the late 80's and the adventure genre IS what you call point & click.

Nice vid, but unsupportable comparison to Zelda.
Wonder Boy/Monster World/Adventure Island did not at all originate as a "response" to Zelda, but rather as a pure action series. Wonder Boy 1/Adventure Island (same game/different character) are as actioney as it gets. Ditto with the Monster World arcade game which is a straight ahead shooter.
When Wonder Boy split off from Adventure Island, it slowly started incorporating more adventure elements. Adventure Island did as well, but far less than Wonder Boy.
Monster World finally became straight-up action/adventure/rpg games starting with the Genesis/Megadrive. Unfortunately, none of those games were released stateside.

Wonder Boy and Monster World are the same series, with different degrees of relation between each game. Do a quick bit of research before telling me what I do or do not know.

This was one of Sega's better early series. It's a good thing they ditched the original Wonder Boy (since Adventure Island ripped it off!) and went with an all new format. There was a sequel on SMS which was a remake of "Wonder Boy in Monster Land" and also a sequel on the Mega Drive where you play as an Arabian girl and you hatch a little monster that helps you fight.

As far as I'm concerned, it's battle between Larry and Destin for who kicks more ass on ScrewAttack. Both bring the funny as well as the smartening.
