The Nerd has had some epic videos lately. In some what of a follow up to his insane battle with the devil in SMB3, he takes a look at all that crap you bought to play your NES games with.

Hahahaha! My cats love to play video game with me, too! Yes, it can get a little annoying.
What's sad is that the Zapper is probably the best peripheral that the NES ever had. The rest of them were just ass. And really, I only used the Zapper for one game, and you all know what that game was.
The only accessory I ever got any extended use out of was the NES Four Score, and it wasn't for it's four-player function. I almost never had four-player parties. However, I found that it was the best way to have a reasonable extension to the NES control pad, allowing me to relax at an enjoyable distance from the TV screen. You couldn't use the Zapper with it, but who really gives a crap?!
You could also save a ton of shelf space with that thing. Most consoles with wired controllers required them to be placed under the TV and close to the floor, but with the Four Score, you could put the NES on a much higher shelf and simply run the Four Score wire down to floor level. That's... actually practical. Thank you, 1980s Nintendo. ...Or was the 90s?
James only covered briefly the bummer that was batteries back in the day. I, for one, absolutely refused to use ANY accessory that used batteries, which means that I skipped the Super Scope. And apparently, I didn't miss anything.
But I absolutely refused to use wireless controllers, because batteries cost money. Let the console power the controller! Acclaim kept coming out with those stupid wireless controllers. First there was just one, and then they made a set of two. Ugh! I had better things to spend my allowance on!
I was such a mean kid, though. For fun, whenever I was at someone's house who used the wireless controllers, I would periodically pick up the television remote and start pressing random buttons. Since both the television remote and the controllers used infared, it would totally screw up the game.
I hope James does an episode for SNES accessories. While there were certainly less of them (and one was even covered here), they tended to be a bit better than the ones for NES. And there was a ton of stuff you could get from Japan that was most excellent. There was a gamepad made specifically for Street Fighter II, another that was made specifically for the Super Gameboy, the Multi-tap (Japan had one shaped like Bomberman's head), and my personal favorite, the ASCII Grip, which made playing RPGs awesome!
SNES had some of the best accessories, if you knew where to look. ...but then, I guess it wouldn't be an ANGRY Video Game Nerd if he talked about cool accessories. Hmm... Still, it would totally kick ass!

Yo, You would not understand how hard i died when he got down and was like "fuck this! ::uses hand on pad::" I used to ALWAYS do that cause i'd get to winded by the 3rd race. God knows that damn pad only worked some of the time for me lmao.
The best part though...::looks around::...Was the smell of the pad ;D

Man that video brought back memories. Playing Duck Hunt with the Zapper aka THE GUN. Good time good times. But i have 1 question is his next video going to be on R.O.B. 0r the Indiana Jones games. ROB is in the back ground behind James in the video but he Puts on a hat thats just like Indy's. Can't wait.

I wish he had included the controllers - the NES Max and the NES Advantage. I had both, and would have loved to hear his thoughts, especially on the atrocity that was the Max's control "pad" ... with that sliding button system thing that ensured that you NEVER went in the direction you wanted.
I once lent out my Advantage to a friend who never gave it back. In revenge, I destroyed his copy of The Wizard with a lighter while he was in the bathroom making an epic deuce. We called it a truce and didn't speak for years ...

This man never gets old, and he never lets their fans down!, i really enjoyed this episode, that cat was funny trying to scratch the ducks on duck hunt haha.
yea i have an nes advantage, it's too bulky for my taste, it's nicer to have the tiny rectangle controller in your hands as opposed to an arcade type controller, don't get me wrong it was an awesome thing to have, it just seemed to take up too much space

The main intent of the NES Advantage was almost completely negated by the fact that most gamers got so used to using the D-pad that they tended to control the joystick with their thumb as well. (Note that James does this in the video!)
Back then, the Advantage was pretty good, even though most of us were using our thumbs instead of our fists. However, the A and B buttons don't have the longevity of smaller controllers, so virtually every NES Advantage I own is almost completely useless. I think I only have one that still works. (I bought a shitload of them when I worked at Toys R Us for EXTREME DISCOUNT, because apparently, Nintendo still had a full inventory of them as late as 1996!)
To date, the best alternative for the standard NES controllers would have to be the dogbone controller. But if you need turbo, there are accessories that would add turbo to a standard controller. The NES Four Score was one. The Satellite also did it. And I think there was even a turbo joystick, similar to the Advantage, that had a controller port built into it, enabling turbo for whatever controller you wanted. However, I don't remember what it was called.

i couldn't stop laughing because of this video, especially for the konami laser scope... "'parents love what they can't hear' FIRE FIRE FIRE"
anyway, all of his vids are great, sucks that he doesn't really go past the ps1.. doesn't really count though, cause he only did one video on a ps1 game, it's still great to hear about games for a nice look back on how much they pissed you off

This is absolutely brilliant, one of my favourites for sure. The ending was classic, and I love your cat! It reminds me of my cats which I can't see because I mvoed away from home, I miss them so much.
i know that you reviewed all the bad accessories but you didn't even mention the Mario Paint mouse and mouse pad, one of the greatest and funnest accessories for the snes, other then that it was hilarious as usual..

10/10, 5 stars from me! AMAZING review, one of the best yet, and possibly one of my most favorite of all time (not to forget the friday the 13th/nightmare on elm street/power glove trilogy videos), this one that shows the accessories for the classic NES, delivers. Another longer, more entertainment packed in, more time for laughs, video this time around. This goes well with the hell-tastic Mario 3 + Wizard review, not on the epic side, but still greatness that is from the beloved James Rolfe. Me wishing he could still make more of his, "Classic" style Cinemassacre movies, these videos of the Nerd is where I've seen him work his hardest, which comes out to be awesome, mostly beacause of his fabulous experience in this kind of thing. I thought his videos were going down, because I always enjoyed 2006's bach of angry reviews more than 2007's (even you and I know, there are a couple awesome ones), I'm preety much proven wrong. 2008 seems like it will kick so much ass for AVGN episodes! Anyway, love the cat, review, show, and is waiting for much m ore to come, thanks James R.!

I think James will look so
I think James will look so cool with those earphones while listening to his iPod
What a strange age for perperhals...
It really seemed they were just springboarding any control design and then just seeing what stuck... or sucked...
You should take a look a some of the ones for the original GameBoy...
...some of those turned the already huge system into a hulking monstrosity....
See you in Indiana!
...shit...why did it have to be SHIT?....

Lol, it's sad but modern systems have just as much crap accessories.
You know why?
SOME MORONS ACTUALLY BUY THEM!
It looks like you could hurt
It looks like you could hurt your ankle playing with the Roll&Rocker.
SNES did not use a sensor as the aiming device
The sensor was a relay for communication between the gun and the SNES. The gun itself still used the TV screen as the aiming device sensor

-The fight is everything-
great video
I'm just glade that I only had the light gun, but I wish I had a turbo controller for those more difficult games.
turbo controller
yea i have an nes advantage, it's too bulky for my taste, it's nicer to have the tiny rectangle controller in your hands as opposed to an arcade type controller, don't get me wrong it was an awesome thing to have, it just seemed to take up too much space
